Blondie, would you be surprised if I told you at Twickenham (UK convention in London) they cut the paper towels in half and told the brothers and sisters that they had to use only one half of a paper towel to dry their hands with? I'm not making this up!!!
Euph, when it comes down to it I'm sure the society would rather not have the concessions there, but in the negotiations with the venue I think that they have to have them there to get a good price sometimes.

Convention Concessions
by Euphemism inhere's a question for you all... why does the society insist that all concession stands be closed at their convention facilities?.
i can understand that back when they provided their own food service, they would not want the competition.
(and in all fairness, their service was undoubtedly cheaper for the friends, many of whom have limited funds.

Jehovah Launches Solo Career
by czarofmischief in2 months after breakup with group, deity starts anew.. two months after bitterly breaking up with the group jehovah's witnesses, jehovah god has announced the launch of his new solo effort.
at a press conference in pittsburgh, the historical launching pad for his previous religious affiliation, jehovah seemed relaxed and happy as he puffed on an illegaly imported cuban cigar and discussed his marketing strategy.. wearing a snowy white t-shirt and a modest crown of eternal fire, radiating holiness, purity, and joie de vivre, jehovah wowed reporters with his wit and sincerity.
the back of crazy mocha coffee shop in the bloomfield section of town rang loud with laughter and the occasional salvation of a weary sinner.. "that's strictly for effect, you know," said the supreme being, watching a newly converted member of his solo effort roll on the floor.

PEACE & SECURITY!! New teaching?
by unique1 ini was talking with my jw friend yesterday who was saying she believes armageddon is near.
i said the end can't be too near because the nations haven't declared peace and security yet.
to which she replied, "oh, they explained that at the assembly.

That's very true. We used to hear many strange new "beams of light" at conventions that never made it to the pages of the Watchtower - it's almost as if Branch Committee and Governing Body members liked to test stuff out to see what hangs with the crowd a bit like a musician tries out different songs on a tour that may or may not end up on the new album!

Beer at conventions - yes, anyone who has been to conventions in mainland Europe will remember that they sold beer at circuit and district assemblies before the "simplification" thing came into place, however in the UK and the US I have never seen any beer sold.
Concession stands - all the concession stands at the convention I have attended (Twickenham) for many years have been open (except the bars), so the society doesn't necessarily insist on them being shut, it really depends on the contract they have with the venue.

I don't think so as far as I know. Convention talks commonly meander around a subject, particularly the scripted ones, of which there seem to be more and more every year. A convention speaker may take a word or phrase such as "Peace and Security" and use it repeatedly in different contexts. Using a bible phrase and applying it in different ways does not necessarily mean that a primary doctrine has changed, it's just the way they like to structure convention discourses. It's surprising that the audience accepts all these bizarre antitypes, but they do.

seat belt laws !!!!!!! argh!!!!
by heathen injust wondering how many people here feel that the seat belt law is mandatory for safe motoring.
i can't stand this law myself as if you only forget to put one on the police are happy to pull you over and detain you and write you a ticket.
this is one of those things that i think if there were a public vote over, it would not exist .

I think it's a question of whether people should be able to risk their own personal safety, and take the chance themselves or not. If people are at liberty to take a risk with their own lives but not of others then there is much more evidence to suggest that seatbelts should be mandatory at the back but not at the front as people at the back can easily crush a front seat passenger to death even at a collision as low as 30mph.
