  You nailed it, LITS. Dubs are trained (without knowing it) to focus on only the bad things in life. The more you focus on how much things suck....the more the more you WANT to believe that there is a new system that is close at hand. In all actuality.....I think it is human nature to sometimes only focus on the negative (though much more so within the borg). Think about it....

  How many times do we focus on and commit to memory the bad things that happen to us? We lament the fact that today we dropped the mail in a big puddle and now it's all wet. And then we promptly stepped in dog poop. We talk about those things to anyone that will listen. Yet we faintly remember the fact that when shopping at the mall....we dropped our keys and didn't know it and they just happened to have landed in the bottom part of the baby stroller we were pushing and thus were not lost.

  The little things that we "luck out" on in life tend to go unnoticed.....but when life takes a big shit on us....we make sure to notice that.

  Now that I am free of Watchtower control....I am making sure to notice the GOOD things that happen in life. The funny thing is....I think there has always been a LOT of good....I just chose not to notice it as a witness......as though focusing on the bad would somehow make the "end" come sooner

  this is a bit of a rebuttal to greybeards ("lack faith in a creator.... watch this") post and the reason why many people lack any faith in a loving creator.

  granted, there could be a superior intelligence that could have set certain events in motion but i do not believe there is a loving heavenly father who gives a rats ass about humanity!

  its just that in all of recorded history, the human race has suffered (and continue's to suffer) a great deal.

  Watching TV, JW wife can see a problem with a fictional cult

  so the jw wife and i are watching the mentalist (cbs crime investigation show) and the crime is the murder of a former cult member of a fictional cult; the visionaries.

  the first policeman on scene is a visionary who tampered with the scene to remove evidence that a visionary killed a former member.

  my wife says "he's going to risk his career and violate the law to protect someone he probably does not even know.

  Flipper - They will rationalize anything. But even if you pin them down on a specific egregious problem (such as showing a witness an Awake that points out how quoting people out of context is one way that propagandists succeed in controlling the minds of others.....and then showing that person multiple examples of the Society engaging in the very same behavior they condemn)......they will say "if you're looking for perfection....you won't find it." And then when you point out that there is a difference between imperfection and willful misconduct, they will tell you that they're done talking about it and engage in an ad hominem attack on your motives for bringing up the subject

  I know exactly what you mean. I've watched two shows with my wife....hoping she'll make a connection. One was a 60 minutes special about cults. It was years ago. I forget which cult it was....but whatever the head honcho said was taken to be gospel. Beliefs changed on a whim based on his revelations. My wife could not believe that anyone would "be controlled like that".

  Same thing with a documentary on N Korea. It focused on information control. And that since information is so tightly controlled.....many N Koreans live their lives under the belief that things are much BETTER there than they are in the western world. My wife even commented about how sad it is that these people live their entire lives believing something simply because they don't know any better. I chimed in...."and they don't know any better because they have been told never to trust outside sources". She agreed.....and proceeded to make no connection to her own religion

  'dubs aren't taught critical thinking skills so they never develop an ability to do some fact checking on their own.' This is so true.....yet for the few that actually DO fact checking on their own......they will manage to overlook all the statistics that cannot be backed up. If a brother claims that earthquakes are on the rise and it is a sign of the end.....and you can prove him wrong with statistical data.....he will change his tune and say that it "feels" like earthquakes are on the rise. Data or no data....what matters is that it "feels" like earthquakes are on the rise. THAT is what Jesus was referring to. And just like that he has maintained his belief while at the same time voluntarily ignoring the fact that the society fed him incorrect information. They don't realize they are doing it, but witnesses will do whatever it takes to defend their organization......including rationalizing the irrational

  Baptism

  i just wanted to ask a question as regards jw baptism.

  i already know that just before the actual baptism the soon to be jw has to answer 2 questions, but what i'd like to know is this: during the actual baptism do the jw's stick to matt 28:19 "baptizing them in the name of the father and the son and the holy spirit" ?.

  thanks in advance for any help.. i'd also like to know if it would be possible to speak privatly with one of the more experianced members.
