The "144,000 barrier" is anothr consideration. Apostasy or no apostasy, JW's cannot afford to allow the existence of "true Christians" as an organized body much beyond the first century.
That is a good point TD. As I was typing the response the 144,000 issue flashed through my mind. It's probably one of the main reasons that Watchtower insists apostasy took over Christianity immediately after the 1st Century. Can't have too many years go by, or it won't add up to a total of 144,000 being reached in the 20th Century; it would have been reached much sooner. Actually, the math on the 144,000 is a big problem anyway.

Based on the information so far (nod to Blondie) it seems borderline whether codexs existed in the 1st Century or only scrolls.
The Century is in question, but as BluesBrother pointed out apostasy exploded at the beginning of the 2nd Century after the death of the Apostles, so it's likely a 1st Century depiction.
At any rate, copies of Scripture were very rare at the time. Isn't it true that a person needed to be wealthy to own one? An ordinary Christian family man would not have been able to have the Scriptures, scroll or codex. And if he did have one, it seems unlikely he would have carryied it around in public.
As Phizzy says, they are making early Christians look just like modern JWs.

If it really is from the 1st Century, wouldn't any copies of Scriptue have been in scroll form?
Not quite sure myself.
Edit: Whoops! Blondie's post got there before mine.
An excerpt,
A federal judge dismissed the Menlo Park Kingdom Hall lawsuit last week due to filing and jurisdictional issues.
The judge’s decision to dismiss was not related to the issues in dispute or any of the civil or criminal acts alleged in the case. She dismissed the lawsuit due to the lack of federal jurisdiction over the issues involved. In her written opinion, she pointed out that her court did not have the authority to rule on most of the charges outlined in the plaintiffs lawsuit.
once when i was profoundly sad for too many days, my brother in law sent us a mix tape.
he named each song after a person in our family.
this is the one he named heather.
Jolene...I even like the singer better.
That was good. It's no wonder. The singer turns out to be Norah Jones!
whistleblower watchtowers dump.
today i added a new article to my blog sharing the whistleblowers letter to new yorks department of environmental conservation (dec) disclosing watchtowers pollution sites and incidents related to it.
my article is titled whistleblower watchtowers dump and is available at: http://marvinshilmer.blogspot.com/2011/12/whistleblower-watchtowers-dump.html.
I am certainly not in the know about such things, but the receipt gives some information that doesn not seem to suggest a normal tax that is routinely paid.
It says,
For: Case #3-19990826-43 WTF Shale Mine
- and -
Division: Legal Affairs
Are taxes usually paid by Case Number to the Legal Affairs division? Or does this suggest a legal violation?
Acronymfinder.com gives one meaning of WTF as "Wastewater Treatment Facility." Atlantis notes (on page 2 of this thread) that the fine was for "polluting a pond." These two pieces of information would seem to suggest that wastewater was mismanaged by Watchtower, resulting in pollution.
If someone is familiar with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, perhaps they could look into Case #3-19990826-43 for more meaningful information.
(In case anyone is wondering what Watchtower is doing with a Shale Mine, when I toured Watchtower Farms more than 30 years ago I remember seeing the open pit shale mine. As I recall, the shale was crushed and spread over dirt roads to pave them.)
I'm not one to make a big deal about subliminal images because many of them are just to vague to be meaningful, to me. But there are a few that need explaining.
Does anyone have an idea about why Watchtower would insert such images into their publications? What does Watchtower hope to achieve?
as you all know i am not the sharpest tool in the ice box, the old lady is!.
can anyone tell me if it is in the elders book that is says if an elder commits serious sin doesnt report it and is found out, but, has the respect of the congregation it is assumed it is forgiven?.
also, one comment i read states that elders were told to destroy certain files when the data protection act came out in britain, what were those files and does anyone know anything about it?.
A thread here,
http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/jw/friends/7414/1/WTS-SAYS-ELDERS-SINS-DONT-COUNT#87017
shows that if an elder's sin was kept secret for 2 or 3 years, and the elder had the respect of the congregation, then it was a sign of Jehovah's forgiveness. No, the sin didn't have to be made public. Yes, he could keep his position.
The information was presented in the first Organization book, and clarified in a 1972 Kingdom Ministry, so it predates the current elder's manual by almost 40 years.
