at genesis 3:16 jehovah told the woman that he would increase or multiply her pain in childbirth.
does this not indicate that there would have been some pain at childbirth even if the woman had not sinned?-g. v., belgium.. .
genesis 3:16 (nw) reads: "to the woman he said: i shall greatly increase the pain of your pregnancy; in birth pangs you will bring forth children, and your longing will be for your husband, and he will dominate you.
Hi Thomas,
The nearer to perfection women were the less difficulty there would be for them in giving birth.
That statement by the WTBTS is very vague and speculative. To me it implies that perfection would have entailed some very different biological and chemical responses. I mean, come on! How is squeezing something the size of a grapefruit out of something the size of a 10p piece not going to hurt?!
Quoting myself on a recent thread http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/watchtower/beliefs/212374/1/Eve-Failing-the-Single-Test-She-Had :
Having just had 2 babies, the physiological and psychological factors of birth are something I've looked at in-depth. It's possible to have a near pain-free (drug-free) experience by adopting a more animalistic approach (look at how dogs, cats and other quadruped mammals birth their young) by keeping mobile, squating on all fours to allow the pelvis to open and for gravity to help. Hypnobirthing is something that is gaining in popularity as a drug-free method of pain-relief. What's interesting about that is that studies such as Dr Grantly Dick-Read's identify the physiological reactions that occur due to what he named the 'fear, tension, pain cycle'. By fearing birth, one increases the pain and duration. Thus telling women that they will experience painful labours as mentioned in Genesis ch3, instills a belief that birth is painful and something to fear which causes pain - thus fulfilling what the Bible writers chronicled!
There has been many medical studies on the effects of fear and pain in labour over the past 20 years. In 2005, Alehagen et al published a medical study in the Journal of Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynaecology whereby labouring women had catecholamines and cortisol levels recorded at the same time as giving an answer on their Delivery Fear Scale and a pain intensity scale. One of the main findings of the study is that "Fear and pain correlated, as well as levels of fear in the different phases of labor." There's even a (surprisingly common) phenomenon known as 'orgasmic birth' in which the combination of high levels of oxytocin, uterine contractions and the baby descending down the birth canal can actually be a pleasant sensation.
I could go on and on about this subject all day, LOL.

P.S. I'm located quite near to you.
i got the convention update from my mom, who attended this past weekend.
sounds like the society made the claim that immorality is escalating at a faster clip.
is that true?
IMO it's that society in general is more open and less judgemental. Whereas immorality used to be kept behind closed doors, we now dismiss things we may not personally agree with as being 'their business'.
an interesting and informative read, covering some recent research.... http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/wondermonkey/2011/07/faith-versus-science-does-crea.shtml.

1065884 - london, bromley congregation of jehovah's witnesses.
any ideas on why this might be?.
Maybe joined up with Forest Hills new KH, which is not far away (except when it is cold, wet.......)
I think you're right St George of England, 'cause that's in Brockley Rise which is a little closer to Bromley than Forest Hill. Also there's the KH in Eltham that houses 4 congos, two of which - Chislehurst and Catford - border the former Bromley and Forest Hill territories. So my guess is they've probably been scattered amongst Forest Hill, Chislehurst and Catford.
Do some congregations qualify for this as a charity,,why some and not others? Why would the UK government give to churches?
Gayle, all UK congos become registered as charities with the Charities Commission as they qualify under the category of 'religious activities'. This then gives them tax-exempt status and allows them to claim back basic-rate tax on donations made to them by UK taxpayers through what is known as the Gift Aid scheme (http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/charities/tax/basics.htm for more info).
all of us who have any ties to the jws know that they have their own vernacular, their own slang.
sure, there are formal titles that we can't really get away from: pioneer, ministerial servant, elder, ______ overseer, governing body, the (watchtower) society, etc.
but there are plenty of other bits of parlance they use that i can do without.... for example:.
Vamp, I'm sorry, looking back through the posts I realise my first contribution was rather crude. There's something about WT-speak that fires up the toilet humour and sarcasm in me. I guess it harks back to the days of being sat at the back of the hall with my cousin as a teen nudging, whispering "He said <insert innuendo>" and giggling to each other to alleviate our boredom.

i read the above on a wall plaque; its ending (xxxxxxxxx) is different from what i have seen online.
please add your own ending.
Hahahaha, love it!
i mean, seriously, interrupting people at their place of business, no matter how brief their presentation is, just seems tacky and intrusive, even more so than the door to door work.
it's like they're going out of their way to annoy people.
isn't one of the benefits of having to go to work that you aren't at home when jws call on you?
Mmm hmm. Very tacky and instrusive.
So of the formal types of ministry there's door-to-door, street and business witnessing. What next, some kind of leisure witnessing?
"Excuse me sir, I see you've just bought a ticket to the new Harry Potter film. Let me show you this scripture which explains everything that's wrong about that..." *takes out NWT*
Arrrrgghhhh!!!! Nowhere is safe.
i had not been to meetings in a long time, but i still had lingering guilt over what happens if the big a comes when i am out.
i found this video on youtube, which put the first nail in the coffin for the wt.
the posters on this site put in the final 32 nails and put the wt in hades for me.
Good find! I've just subscribed to WakeUpWitness's channel. It's sad that most who are in will just blindly accept that because it's come from the F&DS it is "inspired of God" and therefore cannot possibly be distorting concrete archaeological evidence.
there may be no way legally for me to stop this, but it is a worry since i "woke up" to the truth about the truth a couple years ago.. now my young kids (9 and 11) are heading in that direction at the urging of their mother.
i am still inside and trying to do a fade (for family/friend reasons) but sometimes i wonder if leaving would be smarter in the long run for them.
any thoughts or strategies are welcome.. .
Seeing as you're still technically in you could pull rank with the headship arrangement and insist that they must be 18+ before committing to baptism. Use Jesus as the example to scriptually back it up.
Of everyone in my congo who got baptised before the age of 14, and there was quite a few of them, all but 1 have been DF'd/DA'd by their early 20's. I would imagine this is the norm in most places, so you could reason with your wife that maybe she'd prefer her children make up their own minds when they're 'of age' rather than her potentially face years of none/minimal contact with them if they later decided that the bOrg isn't for them once they've grown up.
