The reason they can't do it, mP, is because such a move would mean that they were not selected from among all churches in 1919 to be the One Church. You need to understand the internal logic of the JW mind, which owrks in its own amazing way.

Do you think the WTS is about to change the doctrine about 1914? If so, what are the signs that is under way?
by EdenOne inwhat the title says.
do you think the wts doctrine that says that christ was made king in 1914 is about to change?
if you think that's being orchestrated and prepared, do you see signs of that already?

One experience in our old Kingdom Hall that still HAUNTS me
by Newly Enlightened inthe following is a true experience and my daughter gojira101 will verify that it happened to her.
an experience from our family's past that still haunts me and started my questioning whether this is the true organization of god or not.. my daughter, who has always been a good kid, never gave us any problems [she's an adult now] started regular pioneering.
within a few weeks of her starting, she fell on a steep hill and tore open her knee and had to have several stitches.

It's a terrible story, of course. No doubt about that. But people being mean is kinda like a dog-bites-man story, isn't it?
The meta-narrative to this and a large number of its twins is simply that people are surprised that JWs can be mean like anybody else. See, JWs really think they are better than everyone else -- it is the reason why Jesus chose them over everyone else on the planet back in 1919, even though their teachings were far "worse" than they are now, for example.
I find it interesting to see that the precipitating event that leads people to leave the JWs is not most often a doctrinal disagreement, it is the shocking realization that JWs are not the moral superiors of everyone else on the planet.
Which leads us to ask:
1) why in the world did you think you were so morally superior to everyone else in the world?
2) have you healed yourself of that particular sin?

Weird "new world" artwork from the 2013 calendar
by cedars inmy mother-in-law has a strange obsession with calendars, and orders the society's calendar each year.
this year's calendar is especially weird.
it features images depicting future events - in particular, the society's vision of the new world order.. i've taken the opportunity to scan some of the images for you all to check out.. please note - there are captions for each of the images, but i don't have the english language version of the calendar so i'd rather just quote the scripture used so as not to reveal which country i'm in.. .

I recall reading that a while back, compound complex. I hadn't paid any attention whatever to any of the elements he discusses in his note, but it certainly got me to thinking. Once you have a building, for example, one of the first questions is, "What shall we put on the walls?" For the JWs, the answer is a map of the territory, meeting schedule, year text. For Catholics, as a contrast, the walls will typically have stained glass pictures of saints and a representation of the stations of the cross. It is impossible to imagine a stronger contrast.
His point about the dour nature of the kingdom halls in contrast to the lurid images of the paradise -- good God! Look at that fruit! -- was also interesting.

Would Elders You Knew Have Ordered Stonings If They Could Have?
by Cold Steel infor those of you who used to be jws, or who are active, if the society was in charge of the earth, how many people do you think you would have seen stoned during your lifetimes?
i realize some elders can be zealous about their work, but if they'd actually had administrative authority to have kh members stoned to death, how many elders did you know who would have been zealous enough to really order them?.
did you know any elders who would have ordered stonings, even if the condemned people had been willing to repent?.

Of course they would -- all of them. Disfellowshipping is a substitute for stoning in the cultural sense. Communities going through mimetic crises tend to locate a scapegoat -- who is always guilty -- and focus their hatred on him. JWs have never read the gospel, so they need this sort of cleansing. Stoning is just a more effective disfellowshipping.

I think September/October is the least bad of the lot. There's a long list of the things that are wrong with it, of course -- too cute, didactic, etc. -- but some of the others had such an odd foreshortening that I entertained the idea that it was on purpose. Still do, I guess: overloading the symbols of the new world by design for effect. Still, quite ghastly.
I will observe that they seem serious about affirming the future local cultural legitimacy, at least insofar as it relates to clothing and dishes.

Nope. Can't ever change. 1914 is the dogma -- unchangeable teaching -- of the JWs.
They could change it, and the hangers-on would hang on. But the GB and more sophisticated JWs are not pretending to believe. They really believe. And it is simply by virtue of being the one true church selected by Jesus himself that all the (admitted) doctrinal changes and associated silliness can be tolerated. It is the sine qua non of the entire concept.

The Oh-my-God Particle
by EntirelyPossible ini thought this was really interesting and wanted to share.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/oh-my-god_particle.
the oh-my-god particle was an ultra-high-energy cosmic ray (most likely a proton) detected on the evening of 15 october 1991 over dugway proving ground, utah.
its observation was a shock to astrophysicists, who estimated its energy to be approximately 31020 ev (50 j)[1]in other words, a subatomic particle with kinetic energy equal to that of a 5-ounce (142 g) baseball traveling at about 100 kilometers per hour (60 mph).. the particle was traveling very close to the speed of light - assuming the particle was a proton, its speed was only about 1.5 femtometers (quadrillionths of a meter) per second less than the speed of light, translating to a speed of approximately 0.9999999999999999999999951c.

Just think about it this way. A single sub-atomic particle, probably a proton, hit something with the same force as a baseball moving at 100 km/h.
And it hurt like a bitch, too. Fucking sub-atomic particle.

elders wife swapping question
by unstopableravens ini hear of these stories of elders swapping wives, i remember when i was young hearing of three elders in florida doing this and getting dfed.
my question is this how is it possible to bring this up in conversation?
it seems impossible, how can there be multi elders that know each other willing and the wives?

Well, they are together quite a lot, these elder couples. It's just a more complicated flirtation, really, and the degree to which these couples -- as opposed to individuals -- know each other increases the likelihood. I've no doubt that the rumors are quite overstated (entire elder bodies being involved and so on), but are based on a reasonably common event.

Jan. 1 WT, Their confession for given incorrect dates for the end.
by jam inhave jehovah,s witnesses given incorrect dates for the end?.
jw,s have had wrong expectations about when the end would.
like jesus' first-century disciples, we have "sometimes" (lol).

I have always liked the JW habit of smearing the Apostles for their expectations. Why, yes, I believe they were expecting something on the order of "soon." On the other hand, the intervening thousands of years may have suggested to some observers that attempts to predict the Return of the Lord are a mistake. But the fundamentalist mind rejects the idea of history in this sense and is, therefore, doomed.

Totally agree. I was never technically "addicted," anyway. And getting paid a couple times for sex does not make you a "prostitute," or anything.
