i'm glad it's not just me.. i think my jw friend has been embarrassed one time too many with wt historical facts and so now he has asked me to help him understand my concerns and present him with some research that validates it.

Ah, so it was a straight-up application of 70 years back from Cyrus' edict allowing the Jews to go back. So it was never an historical result -- I wondered if ancient history books back in the 19th century had a chapter where Jerusalem was said to have fallen in 606; turns out, the particular interpretive choice is prior to everything else.
On a different note, I've long thought that sixes and twelves make much better sense for a numerical system. Look what you can do with 12: halves, thirds, quarters, sixths -- it's amazing. Base 10 is stupid: you've got halves and fifths. That's it. Pointless.
All we need is a new single-digit numeral for "10" and "11" and we're good to go.

I have never trusted Canadians. Makes perfect sense.
I do think they are out of the King of the North business for good. Isn't the Jeremiah book mostly about keeping your nose clean -- instead of complicated interpretations and so on. How I miss the days of Oholibah and Ohola!

I think the time series we observe show that implicit date-setting really works. Look at the increases prior to 1975, but more importantly, look at the increases during the 1980s and early 1990s. This was a period when the implicit countdown was really on -- the old generation teaching pretty clearly had a time limit that expired around the turn of the century. In places like Japan and Canada, we see the effort levels simply dropping away around 1996/1997, when the generation teaching changed (not too long before people would have begun abandoning it on their own, I suspect).
The problem with the JWs now is that the overlapping generations idea simply can't support the sort of sacrifices they want people to make -- not in large enough numbers to keep increasing. It's one thing to keep your son out of college in 1984, say, when the End simply cannot be more than 15 years away. It's a whole 'nother thing to make that decision when generations might overlap and, indeed, he could live his entire life in this System. Thus, the current policy of pounding the table.
On the other hand, if there really were a solution less proposterous than "overlapping generations," you can bet they would have implemented it over the last 15 years.

Don't take it as anger but education and enlightenment and some good natured ribbing like we do with our JW friends. Someday you will wake up, I have the highest of hopes for you and others still 'in' Catholicism.
I've shared plenty of good-natured ribbing with friends of mine. Strangely, we never get around to saying the leaders of our different religions "slither" off into retirement or somesuch. Perhaps some might think that a fellow like you, generationally steeped in the ignorant arrogance and hatred of Catholics that is the JW's worldview, has simply given up the parts that suck (the door-to-door work and those stupid meetings) and kept the parts that feel good (bigotry and the gnostic feeling of being the chosen ones). There would be plenty of evidence to support that thought, I'm afraid.

it seem the brother letts was feeling kind of funny these days and has been hearing voices of the devil saying i'm gonna "get you" over and over again, so he's taken the matter up with jehovah in prayer, and now jehovah is saying conduct a search for any sparlock looking toys so the rest of the governing body at their weekly meeting decided to commission lett to take the lead since jehovah spoke to him, he should follow through.. so far they have collected 12 smurfs(one has to wounder how they ever got there?).
they found a sparlock like looking doll over at childrens animation department, probably just model use for animation making,, but it was enough to have the whole department up before a fact finding committee.. letts gave the morning talk the day after, that turned into a 3 hour lecture on the evils of idolatry, and lying, and keeping things from the governing body in this matter of the 12 smurffs and at the end he said we will have to wait and see what the fact finding committee finds out about sparlock the warrior wizard.

Actually, when I was there, I was in the habit of making signs to put on our bindery line. "Meat is murder," and so on; that sort of nonsense. Anyhow, my room mate heard I got in some trouble for "making signs." He refused to sleep in our room for weeks, thinking I was making some sort of Satanic signs -- goat heads or whatever.
On the other hand, he was exceptionally dim. Heart as big as the entire outdoors, but not one brain in his poor head.
