I know a MS who "stepped aside" for "health reasons." It wasn't till years later that I found out he was physically abusing his wife and that's why he lost his privileges. I found out from the wife, so I know it wasn't just a rumour. I was there right after he hit her once.
If it were up to the elders in his cong, my father would still have all his privileges as an elder despite abusing me. He stepped down coz I have a big mouth.
maybe i'm just lucky, but my new husband who has never even been to church treats me better than my first husband who was raised a jw.
my first husband was an alcoholic who had no respect for women.
i suffered with a lot of verbal and emotional abuse.if i wasn't in a romantic mood, then there was something wrong with me.

My first husband was a JW. To him, I was a roommate that he could sleep with when he chose. To him, I wasn't sexy unless I put lots of makeup on and dressed up, whilst he was just fine wearing sweats and a ratty shirt. To him, foreplay was 5 minutes (IF I was lucky) and then he'd ask, "Is that enough? Are you ready yet?" To him, rape was a great way to get off. We argued constantly, because I am independent.
My "worldly" husband is wonderful. Sure, he has his little habits that are annoying, just like I do. But we do not argue. He respects my opinions and is not demanding. He thinks I'm gorgeous even when I look like something the cat dragged in. :) In the bedroom, I come first no matter how tired he is. He likes that I am independent, strong-willed, and intelligent. He compliments me on it. :)
And he opened my eyes to a whole new world (god that sounds sappy) of things I had never known before.

i also noticed while i was studying with them that virtually everybody has/had a relative that was disfellowshipped or knew someone who is/was.

In no particular order and listing them doesn't mean I liked them. Just reminds me of my teens:
1. Electric Youth, by Debbie Gibson....I liked it when I was 13 or 14...*gag*
2. Any stupid song by New Kids on the Block, which I also liked at 13 or 14...*rolls eyes*
3. Songs by Rick Astley, which aren't really that bad. Not great, but not as bad as the above.
4. Losing My Religion, REM....I thought it was a really bad song, coz 'we shouldn't lose our religion as JWs'...*can't roll my eyes enough* I love this song now.
5. The whole Milli Vanilli saga. I thought they were great, and then the lip-synching thing came out. When I watched a show about it a few years later, I couldn't believe I actually liked that weak stuff.
my wife went to the convention yesterday and brought back the new book for children 'learn from the great teacher'.. it's certainly much better than the old pink book, larger and more colourful, even if the pictures have a 1950's feel to them.
the introduction mentions that there are questions throughout the book that you should ask children to find out what is on their mind... saying ' true, the child may come out with with answers that are not correct.
but the printed material that follows each question is designed to help the child to develop wholesome patterns of thinking'.... 'wholesome patterns of thinking' eh?

i have talked to a number of female friends and they agree weak or 'sparkless' kissing is a killer.
(see thread on kissing) for me...and i know this sounds shallow... lousy sex is a killer.
Stupidity turns me off almost as fast as bad hygiene.

When my best friend died (I was 12) of leukemia, I was devastated. I cried so much I made myself sick. I vaguely remember being told something about my grief being inappropriate because it wasn't like I was his family, and that I missed as much school as his brother did. I can't remember all the details, but that was the gist of it.
No one comforted me when my marriage broke down, because I was the one who got the divorce. Why? Coz my husband was abusive. Any comfort from my "friends?" Nope.
None of the elders comforted me when my father admitted to sexually abusing me. Instead, they told him he could remain an elder coz it was so long ago. Who cares if he lied about it for over 25 years? They said not one word to me after his admission. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Nil.
So much for comfort.

Sounds like my school years. Yeah, every pre-teen wants to wear the same double-knit polyester trousers that their gran wears.
I threw all my burdens on Jehovah, but he batted them right back into my stomach. I could go through a whole list of stuff I had to deal with, but I'd bore you. Suffice to say, he gave me back my abusive parents, my abusive husband, and loads and loads of unloving people in the congregation. He left me alone to deal with all those things.
I think I know why.
He doesn't exist. Well, not in my mind anymore.
