After 38 years as a JW, I am not sure if an angry God of the OT or carpenter from Nazareth or a self-appointed FDS really matter to me anymore. None of them helped me find the two jobs I have, help me with my health problems or help me pay off the huge debt that I have or the every day bills that I face. That is my focus and the only thing that helps me on a consistent basis is money.

JWs and Jesus
by lilbluekitty inas many of you already know, i was raised in the "truth", 3rd generation on my mother's side, 5th or something on my dad's side so i've been a jw for a long time, not so much now.. anyway, those of you who either spent a long time in the religion or who actually came from a regular christian religion first or became one later, did any of you notice how jws feel about jesus?
though they're supposed to be "true" christians, they don't talk about christ much or don't talk about his sacrifice much.
i know jws (and i) don't believe in the trinity but what's wrong with being more thankful to him for what he did for us?

When did you think Armageddon would come?
by comment ini was just thinking about this.
having been raised "in the truth" post-1975, i didn't grow up with any specific year in mind.
yes, there was the notion of "this generation will by no means pass away," but by the time i was old enough to think about that concept, the people who were born in 1914 (to stretch it out as far as possible, as the society ultimately did) were still only in their 60's.

When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 I thought it was near. When the generations article came out in 1995 the doubts crept in. I decided to start a family, buy a house and live normally. I went to college and started a business. Things fell apart due to the recession but I am on the rebound.
The UN is hardly ever mentioned in the news anymore and the US does not have any real military challenger-s. Yeah the economy is bad and the masses are restless but I don't see a collapse anytime soon.
I have discovered that most non-JWs are decent hard working folks and that I should not be afraid of them.
Go figure.

The truth is that I can't afford to practice any organized religion right now. I need money, lots of it. I work seven days a week, 12 hours a day to get it. It may not be the source of happiness, but I gotta tell you, it helps.
When I am comfortable materially, then I will take another look at spirituality.
That is my truth.

Beards and Overstepping the Commandment of God
by Darth Rutherford inwhy is it you also overstep the commandment of god because of your tradition?
like the pharisees, the watchtower is overstepping the commandment of god because of tradition.
(psalm 118:9; 146:3) yet, where does jehovah, through his word, command a christian not to grow a beard at all?
-
MrDarkKnight
This is one rule I never could defend as an elder. And of course I now have a beard (Omar Epps, Mike Tomlin style) and everyone loves it.

@Blondie...I really appreciate your comments each week. My son lives with his mother (my ex-wife) who is a kool aid drinking, card carrying JW from a five generation Witness family. At least I know what he is being taught each week and can get him to think about it in different ways.
Thanks!

Does the Issue of Universal Sovereignty make sense to you as an explanation for evil?
by gubberningbody init used to for me, and now it doesn't.. i'm not sure how i was able to accept that argument now that i don't, but perhaps it was connected with my increasing compassion for people and their personal suffering as i've grown older.. now it seems like a sick excuse.
more like a bar-bet with satan and all of creation suffers.. i read paul's words and he has no rejoiner except to say in effect "sucks to be a vessel of wrath...glad i'm not one, but who are you to complain anyway, huh?
who's bigger, smarter and more powerful than you, you, you complaining vessel of wrath, you.

I don't think I could sit by and watch my only Son beaten, raped and abused over and over and over again for six thousand years to prove an obvious point IF I was the Almighty...oh that's right human thinking...oh but we are made in God's image...
Bulldickey!

The CULT that rarely gets called a CULT...but sure does look like a CULT...
by Unlearn ini found this list below on another site.. you've no doubt seen these lists...or lists similar to them: they give you marked ways to identify a cult.. now, i'm sure many of us agree that these signs eerily match a certain watchtower-slangin' group we're all familiar with.. and im sure that what i'm about to bring up has probably been discussed here sometime before 'my' time.. but, look at these 'cult i.d.
symptoms' below...and let your mind go.
: let your mind freely wander.. who else do these signs apply to...if you think wider?

MrDarkKnight
@Unlearn - Since my departure from the JWs, I have had a number of ex-JW's try to convince me not to "throw out the baby with the bath water". Many of them are zealous Christians of various denominations.
I respect everyone's right to believe what they choose, after all its the American way. But for the present I am allergic to organized religion and prefer to hold myself accountable to my own moral code.
Oh, and I am trying to make as much money as I can to make up for 30 years of "self-sacrafice". LOL!!!
I know, I am materialistic and will die at Armaggeddon. But as 50 cent says, "Get rich. Or die tryin'".

This is the WTBS view on cults:
***
w942/15p.4Cults—WhatAreThey?***
The
WorldBookEncyclopedia explains that “traditionally, the term cult referred to any form of worship or ritual observance.” By that criterion, all religious organizations could be classified as cults. However, in general usage today, the word “cult” has a different meaning. The same encyclopedia notes that “since the mid-1900’s, publicity about cults has altered the meaning of the term. Today, the term is applied to groups that follow a living leader who promotes new and unorthodox doctrines and practices.” -

Good to study JW past .... New "Writing Archives" under direction of the Writing Committee
by wannabefree inyes friends, it is important to understand your rich spiritual heritage as jehovah's witnesses, and so you don't have to look at old publications on your own or refer to worldly sources, the organization is pleased to select for you the history as we want you to have it and you can get it in your current watchtower.. from january 15, 2012 watchtower pg 31-32. the governing body is keenly interested in.
our theocratic history.

@factfinder...I know for a fact that they have scanned in everything ever written all the way back to Russell, Grew and Storrs! It is only available to the Writing Department, not the rank and file. I personally know the individual who headed up this effort. Upon its completion he was downsized in 2006. He was very bitter and unhappy, but I was not surprised.
They will NEVER let the rank and file have access to anything prior to 1950. And since the Awake/Golden Age/Consolation is WAY WACKY they will never let the rank and file see it before 1970.
They will release what they when they want to and spin incorrect material as "old light". The rank and file will eat it up. I can tell you that most of the people I know read/scanned or listend to on tape, the 607 BCE stuff and it just accepted it without question.
