[endif]i had a diner with the neighbors... they don't know i'm a jw cause i don't tell people anymore about it.
somehow, the topic of cults came up and one of my neighbors said that the jw require 10% of their income to go to the church.

What you experienced is not uncommon. There are a lot of people who like to think they're "in the know" about things they know little or nothing about.
Years ago, I had a co-worker whose brother was a JW. Our co-worker invited our boss to a social event where her JW brother was present. There was drinking. My boss came to work and said to us something like, "and her brother was drinking with us. I didn't think JW's were allowed to drink." Another co-worker, a know-it-all type, responded, "You're right. There are two things Jehovahs Witnesses do not do, drinking and card playing." Again, she was thinking about Mormons.
In their minds, the cults run together. It's like I hear people getting French words and Spanish words mixed up because they've never formally studied either language, and they're repeating wrong information given to them by someone else. Instead of correcting them, I say, "That doesn't sound right. Let's look it up."
When I was "studying" with the dubs, the people who "studied" with me lived two doors away from the Kingdom Hall. Once their house was up for sale, and a prospective buyer asked them if they were bothered much by those "old" Jehovah's witnesses. LOL

Since you've left, are you still good friends with your bestest JW buddies?
by Julia Orwell inis it possible that someone has a jw friend who's very active in the congregation, knows you don't believe it anymore, and is still your friend?
i'm at the point where word is getting out that i'm not going to meetings anymore, and friends ask me if they'll be seeing me at the ca and i tell them i'm not going.
they want to know why, and what they can do to encourage me.

I live far away from where I was a JW. I like it. I have 3 Facebook friends who were members of the last congregation I was associated with. They got out, too. I've lost track of many of them. What the others say is right: relinquish all hope of remaining friends with active JW's. They don't get to choose their friends.

Ok ladies help me out, coupons, does it make sense to spend $5. in gas to save .50 cents?
by jam inbecause it is on sale doesn,t mean it,s a saving, 5lbs of.
prunes is not a good deal.
wouldn,t it be more economocal.

jam, yes, that is weird. I have cards like that, and it routinely takes several dollars off my grocery bills. I don't even have to use the card, as I can type in my 'phone number on the credit card scanning machine. Talk to the store manager or write to the company headquarters if this keeps happening. It's ridiculous.

I have saved lots of money using coupons, but they are not to be used randomly. There used to be lots of rebates, too, but not so much anymore.
Here's how it works:
Get some #10 envelopes and label them with various categories as follows: Soap and bath products, shampoo and hair care, pet food, baby items, detergent, canned goods, frozen foods, etc. You get the picture.
Make a list on a spreadsheed or word processing table with these headings: (1) Brand name, (2) savings amount, (3) expiration date.
File the coupons in a tackle box. (Take the tackle box with you when you shop.) Once a month, sort your computerized list by expiration date and discard any expired coupons.
Wait for the item to go on sale. Look on your computerized list to see if you have a coupon for the item. Supermarkets are good about putting coupon items on sale. Use the coupon only after the item is on sale.
Some stores offer double value on coupons. But sometimes those same stores have higher prices, so be careful.
Once I went shopping on double coupon day and bought about $20 worth of goods. After deducting the coupon savings, I owed one cent. The person in line behind me stepped up and said, "Here, I'll get that."
Look for rebates, too. These are not as common as they used to be.
My ex-husband was an unbeliever, but he finally told me, after a year or so, that we actually had a better quality of life because of my system.

'' Jehovists'' - good term
by *lost* insomeone used this term on another thread.
sorry, can't recall your name, so please let us know.. .
i thought this was a brilliant title, and i think i will be using it from now on when i think of wt, gb, jw's.. i think it aptly sums up ''the cult''..

The term "Jehovists" appears, if I recall correctly, in John Steinbeck's book, The Grapes of Wrath. The Jobes, or one or some of them, in their travels, encounter some "Jehovists," but I don't think any detail is given about their religious beliefs, but, perhaps only their sexual passion. It has been a very long time since I read that book, so take what I say with a grain of salt, and don't quote me.

That's wonderful! I wish I had your wife's moxie!
I hope you're not going to be shunned by anyone important in your life. If not, it will be an honor to be shunned, i.e., left alone, by that bunch.

in todays watchtower, the society used the first chapter of nahum to explain why a father who lost his job would put his trust in jehovah by going out in service midweek.

It means that they are desperate for new converts, as there is little to no growth in numbers of new JW's. Desperation is very unattractive.

Should all elders be painted with the same brush?
by Socrateswannabe inan hour or two ago, i was reading a topic on this forum that welcomed new elders to jwn.
there was some criticism aimed at the op and i understand that elders shouldn't be singled out as special.
one poster said he/she hates all elders.

Forgive them, for they know not what they do.
