There are no words to describe how despicable this situation is. My heart goes out to your daughter and all who care about her. I hope no one is telling her that she will "never" be normal again. She needs hope and strength. I pray that she gets through this and is able to build a good life for herself.

Funeral for an atheist
by Stealth in99% of all funerals that i have attended have been the wt version, where they preach about the resurrection into paradise and say little about the person who passed other than they were loyal to jah.
the other 1% catholic for grandparents.. now that i consider myself an atheist, i got to wondering what do atheists plan for when they die?.
if you are a non-believer what are your plans for when you die?

Donate my body to science. Give my assets (if I have any) to my descendants and donate anything they don't want to charity. Instead of flowers, donate to Shriners' Hospitals for Children, who gave me gazillions of dollars worth of free medical treatment and many positive experiences in my childhood. Invite people to come by and say a few words if they wish to, with no expectations or judgments about whether they do or not. Otherwise, my family is instructed to do what they think best.
At least in death, I may have something to give back to the world.

Why is it wrong for Christians to celebrate Christmas?
by james_woods inthis was inspired by terry's thread.... it is something that raises many questions about the jw belief system.. .
for one thing - the bible certainly explains all the details of the christ birth.
it certainly does not tell people to avoid celebrating it with feasts, customs, etc.

I once saw an ex-JW on "The John Ankerberg Show." He explained it this way:
There are two reasons for everything - the "reason" they tell you AND the real reason. He stated that he believed the real reason JW's can't celebrate Christmas and birthdays, among other holidays, is that it takes time away from their "ministry" and allows for bonding with "worldly" family. Not celebrating can create hostility and misunderstanding among family members, thus motivating the JW non-celebrant to feel "persecuted" and to be more controlled by the borg.
I think he was probably right.

A few years ago, I attended a Korean Pentecostal Church for about a year. I noticed that the names for Biblical characters in the sermons (in Korean, with an English interpreter) were Spanish. When I inquired as to the reason for Spanish names in a Korean sermon, I was told that the first missionaries in Korea were Spanish. There are probably no Korean equivalents for these names.

Double-life, sounds like a prison sentence....or maybe not?
by sparrowdown inquestion: do you think the "double-lifers" have the best of both worlds?.
just asking, because i have wondered, if i had an outlet to express my utter.
disgust and general dissatisfaction with wt teachings and cong-life while i. was still in, ie on forums etc, maybe i would never have left.. just a thought, anyone else have any?.

I lived the "double life" for a very short time. I had an auto accident, a near miss, crying jags, drinking binges and deep depression. I planned an escape and moved to the other end of the country so "they" couldn't harrass me and bring me back into that pit of misery. It took about two years to become mentally free of all the nonsense.
It was SO worth it! I love my life now,.

Great post! To those who come from an uneducated family (as I did), please be wary of so-called "career schools" and other private colleges. I have known people who "graduated" from such schools and can't get a decent job because they didn't learn the bodies of knowledge that are the basis of everything else: math, science, language and history.
Our best bet is a state university where students are required to take English, Math, Science and Humanities courses. One purpose of a good education is to become a well-rounded individual, not an "expert" in one thing without a knowledge of math, grammar, biology, psychology, world geography, etc. Education is also about enhancing one's life experience by transmitting an ability to understand and enjoy many different kinds of experience and culture.
I graduated with a bachelor's degree at age 37. I had to learn to think differently, as I was a simple country girl without any family who even graduated from high school. I am so grateful for the experience of going back to school in my 30's, when I was ready to knuckle down and learn.
I recently acquired a certificate to teach English as a Second Language. I plan to go to China next year and find a job doing just that! I am 67 years old, but still have many things on my "bucket list." I'm excited with anticipation!

They're allowed to be wrong if they're "sincere." They do not, however, believe anyone besides themselves is allowed to be wrong (while really sincere) without very serious consequences.

by DATA-DOG inhave you had the pleasure of hearing this doozy??
i believe it was presented at the circuit level first, it has filtered it's way down.. the poor eldub opens with this definition of the word fantasize:.
"to conceive fanciful or extravagant notions, ideas, suppositions, ect.

People actually do everything for babies. It's not a fantasy at all.
Most or all of us who post here have had our Armageddon/Paradise fantasies and other delusions, but we've move past them. It's clear that the GB knows that fantasy sells, the more vague the better,

Why are people so dramatic
by rebel8 ini want to retire.
i'm quite a ways off from the age to collect social security and all.
i don't hate working--i actually like it.

Lucky for me, I am retired. I don't live in a senior community, but I have a friend who does. They have plenty of drama to go around. It's like elementary school.
I am grateful to my family members who allow me to live in their home. I moved 2,000 miles away from my home, and am avoiding much drama that way as well.

I don't suppose the Chinese government has food stamps or other government subsidies to help their poor. Are there private charities working on alleviating the problem? Many Westerners live in China. Are they doing anything to help?
