they don't work my street, not in the last 5 years.
The locals don't know where I live, don't know I used to be a JW. Even though I'm not 2 miles from a KH and live in a populated area, I have not seen ONE in 3+ years. Come to think of it, didn't see one in the last town I lived in either.

Nah, I think 'ol Russel was a religious entrepreneur himself. He was not the saint that the JWs make him out to be. He was pretty much a crackpot too.

Preston, ozziepost pointed out that not only DO they monitor the talks, but he at times drew that 'wonderful duty' to do so. I recall hearing about that many years ago myself, when one of my friend's father was giving a talk in the distric conv. The father knew the fellow that was to monitor the talk. And they use manuscripts for most talks, not outlines anymore.

viewing the tennesseans article today "disfellowship described as being 'worse then death'" one of my co-workers asked if this was true.. i told him that many have viewed it that way in different aspects.
some have been driven to suicide because of not knowing how to deal with the prospect of being df'd.
they are cut off from their family, and the only people they have really been allowed to associate with as friends.. this brought out a question from my husband on the way home from work tonight: "are jehovah's witnesses really a happy group of people?".
Too true, there were SOOO many people I knew on Prozac, or other anti-depressants. The ones that weren't were taking herbal remidies in attempts at self treatment. I was happy, at least, partly due to the fact that I did what I wanted to anyway (got me in trouble all the time . But I HATED meetings, at least the content portion of them, preparing for talks (but actually didn't mind giving them), and REALLY hated FS. But like going to the dentist, one put up with the bad to get the 'good' which was continued friendship with others.
The other thing that really chapped my ass was the conditional-ness of friendships - JWs are forever getting offended at one thing or another, it's like walking on eggshells all the time to avoid offending someone. I've never known a thiner-skinned people. This doesn't tend to lead to real happiness!

I wonder, if since Jesus is no longer the mediator for the great growd, if all those JWs should start replacing the standard JW rote ending of "In Jesus name we pray" with "In the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society's name we pray"...?
