  i just read this article in the chicago sun times.

  when i started reading the parents were religious and then saw home-schooling, i had a gut feeling they were jw's.

  i read on and found out i was right.

  Ah yes, the old "this hurts me more than it hurts you" as the spankings were administered. I never got the point of those semi-legal beatings as a child. It just made me resent my parents (whose response to every infraction was yet another spanking). And I was lucky, not really 'beat' upon, but the spankings were fast a furious. Not that they taught me anything, I got to where I just took the beating and got on with what I wanted to do

  It really kills me when I saw all those sub-2 year olds being smacked repeatedly to 'be quiet' during a meeting. How un-natural for a 2 year old to try and sit still for 2 hours! And usually with nothing but a book to look at. Maybe thats why so many JW kids end up with ADD.

  All that said I'd like to take that cable upside this dude's head for what he did to this little girl. Hope he get's his due in the big house ... maybe he'll be someone's bitch.

  he claims to be a jw, and he claims that his elders, circuit overseer, and even the society are well aware of his activities here on the net.

  Na, I've seen cases where there is one local nut-job in the congo that is tolerated due to a) family, b) money, or c) the congo sees them as 'mostly harmless' (a-la the earth being 'mostly harmless' in The Hitchhikers Guide )

  I lean towards Possibility #4 myself ...

  my votes:.

  the best: as a group they're relatively color-blind (low to no incidence of racism among them ).. the worst: their stubborn refusal to see the good in anyone but themselves!.

  I think the race issue is simply swept under the rug like all other issues to make the JW's look better to the public. I however found that even though the JW line is to preach that race is not looked upon by god, the general rank and file JW member was as prone to racism as any other non-JW person. Namely, most people were either mildly to very racist. I have found that there seem to be just as many non-racist people outside the JW org as there are inside (percentage-wise). I think it has more to do with upbringing than religion ...

  Manic depression/bipolar disorder

  am i the only one here who's completely crazy?

  got diagnosed bipolar earlier this year, broke the news to mother (staunch jw) and she just said it explained a lot.

  the most depression-inducing things about a JW upbringing is that they put this huge emphasis on what a terrible place the world is...so when you leave, you still carry this very negative world view, but without the promised magic fairy wand to make it all better.

  Festering Helplessness

  .. my wife is just preparing to be baptized this weekend.

  i have tried to dissuade her numerous times, even preparing a logical argument that i thought was indisputable.

  i am an active jw and was raised as one.

  i have been watching the site for a while and thought it could benefit from the opinions of someone who is happily a member of the jw's.

  i will not get into any argumets that lead to nothing except name calling, and will not talk with anyone who is just plain mean (plenty of them in here).

  Ha ha, JW ego feeding time again. OUR work is SO important god will not destroy the earth until 'it' is done. Even in 'saturated' countries where the JWs have been for years they are but a drop in the religious bucket, and their pathetic 'preaching' campaign is just about worthless. Like the average person at the door really has any idea what messge is being presented to him in that 20 second mag sales routine.

  Oh and the whole "god opens the hearts of the rightous" or "god directs JWs to the people who need to hear" - such self absorbed BS, if that were true, god sure is doing a piss-poor job or directing, I mean, how many THOUSANDS of hours of door knocking is required for just ONE JW convert? If he were really directing it wouldn't he quit wasting time and just 'get it on'?

  Yea, that was one that I always hated too - being forced to associate/socialize with people you have NOTHING in common with, or were beyond highly anoying. It's so nice to have the freedom to associate with who you WISH to, not who you are 'supposed' to because they're pioneers/whatever. I swear the main reason many misfits pioneered was simply to be sure they were included in activities - had to have the pioneers there!

  I agree entirely. "fairweather" freinds at best is how I would describe all the JWs I was freinds with over the years. And not only will they shun you if you are DF'ed, but any perceived infraction upon the 'rules' will result in you becoming a social pariah. Not to mention the constant struggle not to 'stumble' or 'offend' people. I've never known a more offendable group of people in my life. It felt like life was a pinball machine of running about making amends all the time for comments that were made, etc.

  The past means nothing to the average JW - it's always 'what have you done today'? And they are quite willing to never speak or look at you again at the word of 3 men.

  perhaps you recall the instance in the bible where samson made a wager with the philistines that they couldnt guess his riddle.

  as it turned out they wheedled the answer out of him by his fiancee, but the point is that they had a wager.

  since the underlying assumption of the apostasy is that we are not living in the last days of this system of things, and that this world is not facing anything remotely like the biblical apocalypse, at least not any time soon, in the spirit of such antagonism, i would like to propose a similar wager.
