I attended the meeting yesterday and was very attentive to see if there was any new light. The theme of the "special" talk was Babylon the Great. The talk was just a rehash of old information. If there was any new light embedded in the talk the old fellow that gave the talk did not discern it. You could tell that the speaker did not stick to the outline. So, when he gave the same old line about the UN it was unclear if what he said was in the outline or rehashed information from a talk that he might have given in 1960.

Special Meeting on 4/27/03 ?
by robhic ina friend told me she wanted to attend a special meeting today, sunday april 27. her health has been bad for the last few months so she hasn't attended anything except the memorial in about 6 months.
why this meeting was referred to as "special" wasn't mentioned.. since the jw like to march in lock-step uniformity, i am assuming this meeting is going to be the same country (world) wide?
is a local meeting being special allowed if all other meetings are not (for the most part)?

SOJ,
If only she was happy. This is a person that is totally wracked with guilt. She has never allowed herself any happiness. She is constantly concerned that she is not "doing enough in the ministry." Her guilt has prevented her from having a close relationship with her grandchildren.
She spent her whole life with every expectation that she would never grow old, which meant that she did not plan for the future either financially or emotionally.

Here is the situation. I found out that my 78-year-old mother-in-law is aux pioneering this month. She should not be driving at all and especially not with other people in the car. When I found out about her pioneering, told my wife that the elders should not have let her pioneer or, at least allowed it on the condition that she does not drive.
Isn't it the responsibility of the elders to prevent a potential disaster? I would think that the elders could be held liable in case of an accident that could possible injure fellow witnesses and the general public. However, since I have no credibility because of my apostate attitude, the comment was totally dismissed.
Perhaps I am being overly cautious. We, of course, know that the angels are watching over our fellow pioneers.

Do You Like To Gamble?
by minimus inone of the sins that a jehovah's witness can get disfellowshipped for is gambling.
those that occasionally gamble, even for pennies, are considered "greedy ones".
of course, playing the stock market or futures is not considered gambling these are "investments".personally, i enjoy a little gambling.

I have been to Vegas several times over the past few years for various work related meetings. During all my visits, the accumulated amount that I gambled was less than $5.00. Also, I have never and will never buy a lottery ticket.

Its been almost a year since I've been out; got a visit this past Sunday
by Leander inlast year on may 18th i officially stopped attending jw meetings, i first told my wife and then i wrote a brief letter stating that i was resigning as a ms. over that time period i've had some doubts about whether or not i was doing the right thing, but basically i feel that i've made the correct decision.
unfortunately i can't say that i've become more spiritual during these past few months, however i do feel more and more strongly that there are many things in the bible that may be erroneous.
i'm not at the point of being an atheist, but i do feel that i'm ignorant of god's purpose for humans.

My wife came home from the bookstudy last week and informed me that the elders are going to visit me this weekend. Dispite the fact that they invited themselves, I am going to go along with the visit.
It should be an interesting visit, I will give a review of the meeting next week.

If the next meet-up is in NYC, let me know. I have met a few fellow New Yorkers and would be interested in meeting others. Thanks.

I am glad this topic got started. I have been seriously considering counseling. However, I am not sure about how to determine what type of therapy is appropriate and who to go to. Any suggestions as to how you picked someone? They all look about the same when you look at a list in the yellow pages.

Do all witnesses pay income tax?
by JH injesus said that honest christians pay their taxes to the government.
so, do all jw's pay income tax like they should?.
as you all know, the more you earn, the more you pay income tax.

Here are some facts to consider. If a couple is filing a joint return, shifting income to your spouse does nothing. Shifting income to children may help, however, if an individual is in the $20K per year income bracket, there is probably no effect.
At that low of income, a family may benefit from an "earned income credit." Thus, it may be to their benefit to file a tax return. I spent last tax season volunteering to complete tax returns for low-income individuals. I did more than a few returns where a low-income family walked away with a several thousand-dollar check in the form of a low-income credit.
Just some insight from a friendly CPA.

I'm Glad I'm Not An Elder----Who Wants To Be Sued???
by minimus innow that a new hampshire judge has opened the way for the elders to be sued in the berry molestation case, it's relieving to know that you can't be sued because you're an "untrained volunteer" elder.
i wonder if these guys smugly think that since the watchtower society is defending them, god will make sure they will not get into any trouble.

Benext, you paint an interesting scenario. What if an individual was sued because of his actions as an elder however by the time suit was filed the individual was no longer a witnesses. Because the society might have a vested interest in the outcome they may be forced to help out. If that ever happens to me, I’ll let you know

What constitutes a life that pleases God?
by Billygoat init's an interesting question i came across with the new book i'm reading: the reflective life by ken gire.
i had the privilege of meeting ken a few years ago at a church retreat.
he was a shy, quiet speaker, with a very unassuming presence.

If we appreciate that life is gift and enjoy life then everyone is happy, including god. God's happiness is not dependent upon us following some silly prescribed ritualistic existence.
