Christmas - love it or leave it?

i am just watching my neighbours across the road putting up christmas lights while their children run around bursting with excitement.

i am feeling all christmassy now.

can't wait for my daughter to come home from uni next weekend so we can go and buy a tree from the garden centre.

I agree with Witness My Furry, I want to have nothing what so ever to do with a holiday having anything to do with religion.

I want to what ever I can to make sure that my children and up theirs, and so on and so on, will be able to keep their minds free from these religiously related traditions.

I'm like, dude, we just got out of a very difficult situation with leaving a cult, and you guys want to jump right back into something else, albeit not as dangerous as a high controls group, that is religiously based? Religion, the thing that makes you feel inadequate and teaches you need a redeemer and are sinfull and need to come to them to be cleansed. Come on, why jeopardize the minds of your kids like this.

Of course I am going to a Winter Solstice party later in the week but that's different.

Let's Talk About Sex

a old thread was bumped recently in which posters from 9 years ago raised objections to evolution basesd on personal incredulity regarding sexual reproduction.. i remember an elder in one of my old congregations saying something to the effect that "how could evolution be true, if men evolved before women...blah blah" you get the picture.. i have refreshed my memory of a chapter in nick lane's excellent book "life arising - the ten greatest inventions of evolution" and put together a summary.

it would be great if others would add to it - cantleave, adam, tiktaalik, s&r, bohm et al?.

here is my starter focusing on the problem with non-sexual selection.... if the driving force in evolution is the struggle of selfish genes to pass on copies of themselves to future generations, then sex seems counter-productive.

Ladies, How Big Is Your Diamond Engagement Ring?

i notice a trend that suggests that many ladies either have a one carat or bigger diamond ring or much smaller if any.. do you have a diamond ring and if you do, what size carat is it?

No one wants to buy a drill or a power saw, they "want" a hole or a cut board.

No one wants to buy a diamond, they want the receiving mate to think positively about them when they look at the diamond. And they want their friends to think positive thoughts about them when they see the diamond. "Oh,.. her husband must really love her and they must have a great marriage since he spent so much money on her for something that really does not actually benefit the family other than perceived thoughts of love"

Usually it's the rings with owners that are comfortable with just having a diamond, not of any particular size, that is able to endure the storms of marriage.

On the other hand, it's the ones that expect or demand a large rock that have issues before the ink dries on the pre nup.

Had an aunt that was Df for decades and as a good Jw child, was taught to view her differenty

and allowed that to even carry over to h children, my cousins, she after years of being dfd and shunned from her family joined the Mormons.

Have you ever scared the crap out of someone?

the recent thread about "supernatural" experiences helped me to remember the times i enjoyed playing frightening pranks on people.. example #1: years ago the employees at a place i worked for had a 40th birthday party for one of the women we worked with.

it was a typical "somber and dark" humorous party with black balloons, black candles on the birthday cake... all meant to suggest that at 40 ife as you know it is just about over.

it's funny, but 25 years after my 40th birthday i'm yearning for those days when things were better.. ...but i digress.

Had an old wooden cabinet of sorts that was large enough for a 16 yr old kid to fit into. We had several of our local Jw friends staying over and we started talking about stories we had heard from the others in the past about spirit creatures, demons etc and when he left the room for a bit, my brother and I hatched a plan.

My brother hid inside the cabinet and waited a bit for us to get back into the story telling. After a bit he started scratching lightly inside the cabinet and would pause A Bit then come back a with some more each time getting slightly louder and louder each time. After he started really making some noise and rocking the cabinet a bit.

A young brother started saying rather loudly " In the name of Jesus, I command you to get out!!"

My brother hears this and stops all actions. Then the brother starts telling us that this is what you have to do,.. Blah blah, and then at the perfect time my brother really turns it up, rocking the cabinet and slamming his fist on the inner walls to give that brother something to think about.

He pretty much freaked out and we, to his relief, told hi what was going on and the he was embarrassed a bit

Is there anything the WTS could say that would NOT be accepted as fact?

this is a follow-up from the recent thread from adjustments, addressing the mind control and manipulation the wts uses to threaten the jw's into unquestioning submission.. is there any statemtent they could make, that people would not question?

honestly, if you read their study articles, it is unbelievable what the people will listen to, swallow as "truth," and then regurgitate to others, as if it has always been their belief.

we visited a local kh for the september 8 & 15 lessons on new light.

Please check out the YV show " breaking the faith". Just started 2 weeks ago here in the USA on TLC channel.

About the FLDS group,... lotsa parrellels to the jws that will surely get the info into their heads without them knowing it. In my opinion, it will wake some up.
