Peacefully, in the Palliative Care Unit of the Brantford General Hospital, with his wife, Beth and granddaughter, Rea by his side passed from this life on November 4, 2024. Jim was in his 93rd year. He was preceded in death by his parents, Levis Bosworth Penton and Ida Emily Penton, his brother, Edwin, his late wife, Marilyn and infant son, Philip André. He is survived by his wife, Beth, his children, David, John (Shona) and Anne (Bob) and foster daughter Linda (Willie). He is also survived by eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Born in Saskatchewan, Jim lived an extraordinary life as a professor of history and religious studies. Jim was the only surviving member of the original Department of History at the University of Lethbridge. Fluent in Spanish, he first taught in Puerto Rico, followed by universities in the states of Upper Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa, as well as in Calgary. Jim was an amazing man and an example of Christian living, always an advocate for the downtrodden and abused. He and his first wife, Marilyn, took a number of people into their home when there was someone in crisis who needed their nurturing, be it family or stranger.
Jim actively researched and wrote up until the time of his passing. His most recent efforts were devoted to a book on religious persecution in Canada, with a focus on the history of indigenous people in Canada. This work will be published posthumously. In recent years Jim founded Hart Publishers Inc. In collaboration with his close friends Rud Persson and Eric Wilson, Jim oversaw the publication of important works on the history of Jehovah’s Witnesses. During his academic career, Jim authored and published several important books through University of Toronto Press. He was known as an excellent teacher at the University of Lethbridge, and continued to give very popular lectures and courses at the Burlington Seniors Centre after retirement.
On the personal side, Jim loved gardening. Each spring and summer Jim and wife Beth lovingly tended the raised garden beds in their back yard. He was also an animal lover, and took particular joy in making sure the bird feeder in the back yard was kept full.
Jim was very proud of his Métis heritage through his maternal grandmother Florestine Gariépy. As a young man, Jim relocated from his birth province of Saskatchewan to sunny Arizona for health reasons. There his exposure to Mexican food, language and music fostered a life-long love of Latin American culture. In Tucson he met and married Marilyn Kling, his late first wife and mother of his children. Jim and Marilyn were together until her death.
Jim found great happiness late in life with his wife Beth. They provided each other with love and support and a shared commitment to Christian values. Their union brought great joy to family on both sides.

Jim started and incorporated a publishing house called Hart Publishing in Canada and published the book recently entitled Rutherford's Coup.
i am non political and have never voted but nonetheless i have been keenly watching to see how the trump presidential race unfolds.
i believe that his involvement in propelling or influencing a leaning toward bible prophecy will unfold.
how, i can’t say but something tells me that this anomaly and outlier being trump is highly signifiant!
Sad but true, Trumpolini, wins the electoral vote.
Eph. 6:11 "Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes."
my only prowess in making predictions stems from my 77-years of life in the united statesgrowing up under president truman, eisenhower, kennedy, nixon, .....etc.
etc.i was a widdle kid sitting in front of a tiny black and white tv set when the very first broadcastsof political conventions, deal-making, debates (nixon vs kennedy), assassinations (jfk, rfk, martin luther king, etc.
) i grew up with duck and cover under my elementary schooldesk, the cold war, the iron curtain, the korean war, the vietnam war and i went to federal prisonas a jw conscientious objector while hippies, flower children, political activists protested and universitystudents were fired up on by troops.i grew up reading newspapers (2 of them).
Welllllll....
I couldn't have been more wrong in my predictions.
So eating crow for breakfast this morning.
Not tasty but hoping for better times.
Let the chaos continue.
4 year of horrorshow.
or Khorosho sadly.
