I posted quite a bit on the comments thread as joebazots. I have yet to have a witness reply to ANY of my comments. They got nuthin. The funniest thing to me was how so many of them went apeshit crazy about being called a "sect". I replied to one that "Just because the governing body uses the word sect as a derogatory description of other religions does not mean that it's the widely accepted definition of the term." This stupid article spawned 16 pages of threads.
On many comments, I asked if the individual JW was counting their time posting on that board....
Too funny.

Dogs in field service
by keyser soze inthe thread about angels in the ministry reminded me of this.
there was a lot of rural territory in the congregation that i attended, which meant a lot of houses with dogs out running loose.
some of these dogs were fairly vicious.

The whole ripping the throat of the dog out thing probably stemmed from what happened to a friend of mine in field service. Of course, it was nowhere near as spectacular...and he was a WW2 Navy vet and this happened at least in the 1970's. He was a co-worker and one of the only elders I've ever truly respected and though that he lived by what he preached and he was no unreasonable fanatic...
anyhow...he's going door to door in the semi-rural area south of St. Louis, MO. He goes to this door and around the corner comes this little ankle biting chihuahua barking it's freaking head off. Now my friend, Bob, has just knocked on the door and, being a little hard of hearing is having a hard time listening for the tell tale sounds of a householder scurrying towards the door. The dog is still standing on the top step in front of the door barking its fool head off and snapping at Bob. So, Bob reaches down and flicks the dog right on the snout. For no explainable reason, the little rat dog drops like a stone. He's dead as a hammer. Bob is looking around and seeing no one around, stuffs the little canine corpse into his bookbag for later disposal. True story...no embelishments. He laughed and laughed at it. He said the funniest thing was the look on his wife's face.
As for me, my only dog story was a stupid cocker spaniel that came out of a garage barking at me. He charged and bit the back of my ankle...not enough to break the skin. As he turned and started to charge me again, I decided I wasn't going to just stand there....so just as my foot was going to connect with the dog's head at a high rate of speed, here comes the householder to see what in the hell her dog is going nuts about. Needless to say, I didn't really give my spiel...I just got the hell out of there.

So, I have this conversation with my crazy JW cousin/Jw's wrong again
by dawg init all starts off pretty benign, when she suddenly says "well, you believe man can solve the problems of this world"... she says this because i've ran for political office twice, losing once.
i know where this is going... so i say "i've never said that is our only hope, i just recognize that i live in this reality today, i'm here now, and god's kingdom isn't.. it's the men here now that run things, if god ever steps in, then i'll gladly move aside as i'm sure any man would".
she says something to the effect, that we disagree on that?

I've served on mayoral advisory comittees before. My JW wife was proud of me for doing so, knowing that at least I give a rip about what happens to ourselves and our neighbors in the community. This is a great discussion because I've been battling it out with JW's over on Slate.com's forum about JW's and not voting. Some of you gave me some really good stuff to use there about past political ties that saved the asses of god's people.

REM show last night... my critique
by dawg inin art, there can be no wrong opinions, we like what we like and have to offer no explanation for what we like and/or do not like.
that said... my take on last night's rem concert at lakewood amphitheater.
ok, so i'm an athenian, that means i'm supposed to love all things athens, georgia is about; but i've never been a big rem fan... in fact, when i was offered front row tickets given by the band themselves, i really didn't want to go.

I saw their new show the second night of this tour at the Sasquatch Music Festival at the Gorge Amphitheater in George Washington. They were pretty good and I was glad they included some of their older hits. It was getting late, so we actually left a little before the end of the show...probably about 3/4 through. We actually ended up really liking a couple of the other acts that we weren't familiar with...like Ozomatli and M.I.A. That was the best part of the whole day.
I didn't pay for the tickets but I know they weren't cheap. My brother paid for the tickets and also paid to fly me out to Portland, OR plus drove us and paid for hotels on our road trip. We had a great time. It's one of the best times in my adult life.

Witnesses on the train
by Simon inthey are having their dc here in calgary at the pengrowth saddledome so this morning the lrt train was full of them.. what a spectacle.. guys in ill-filling suits (on a roasting hot day) and 22 year old women dressed like they are 42, all with their silly name badges and yapping on loudly (much louder than anyone else ever talks to each other on the train - i guess they have to be conspicuous eh?).
little did they know that sat just feet away from them was an evil apostate ... ooooh.

I remember the international convention I think 1976 Candlestick Park San Francisco when they released the Bible Stories book. We all had our plastic YELLOW bag with the releases. Hundreds of JW's walking down Market St with our yellow bags what a sight...
Those weren't just the releases in those bags...that was your pre-packaged literature for that special day of field service, I think it was either the Thursday or the Friday. I remeber them too. I attended at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. I'll never forget it because I got seperated from my parents there....at the mature age of 7.

As a truck driver, I've had a few close calls. One of the scariest was because on a load that wasn't secured right in the trailer. I was carrying about 45K lbs. of steel wire. I was approaching an intersection and the light went yellow. The trucks were loaded so that in the nose, there were about 10 spools of the wire and then a big space then an I-beam chained to two D-rings in the floor and then 10 more coils. The I-beam is supposed to keep the load from shifting. The problem this day is that the loaders didn't put the bar in. So, when I jammed on the brakes, and got stopped in time, about 22K lbs of wire slid forward about 18 feet and slammed into the nose of the trailer, pushing me out partway into the intersection. I was very glad there wasn't a car in front of me.
I will say I'm glad that some states now have laws about not cutting back into traffic too close in front of a truck because that happens all the time. Someone cuts around a truck and comes back in front of him way too close, then jams on their brakes because of stopped traffic.
I am very glad all of you are okay. I know it's a scary thing to see "Peterbilt" getting bigger and bigger in your mirror.
Everyone, I know there are some dumbass truckers out there...but remember, we generally are some of the safest drivers out there. Because of the size of the rig and the physics involved, when someone messes up, it's usually pretty spectacular...but they are the exception - not the rule.

Wash your mouth out with soap
by keyser soze indid anyone ever have this done to them, literally?
i thought it was only a figure of speech, until my mother did it to me for real.
i think i was about 10 at the most, and i said the word "piss", which to my mother was the equvalent of the f-word.

I only got the soap a few times. I was partial to the flavor of Zest. Once I got Lava soap. I was picking pumice out of my teeth for a day and a half. I'm still a potty mouth but I do have a pretty good self edit mode. Now my smart ass older sister, she used to get popped in the mouth. I remember once dad backhanded her at the dinner table with his left hand. His wedding ring hit her on the mouth. She had a fat lip for a week.

I wonder if she'd have chosen this debased music if she realized it was composed as an AIDS benefit song?
Seriously, though. It reminded me of one of those American Idol auditions where Simon has his mouth open, aghast, and Paula and Randy are staring uncomfortably because they all know this person though they were the shiznit.
"That was AWFUL. Your friends need their hearing checked."
