Did Jesus really exist?
by slimboyfat ini had been wondering over the past few years whether there really was a historical jesus at all, until a few months ago when i read bart ehrman's latest book "did jesus exist?
" initially i was persuaded by his argument that the nt contains multiple sources that testify to jesus' existence.
but more recently i have been reading the christ myth position of richard carrier and his responses to ehrman.

Why would they DIE for it. If you and your friends decided to make your friend someone to be worshipped, etc, and it was all a hoax, you wouldn't end your life for it, etc. You'd be like, ahh j/k.
Good question. Didn't they die for their pagan gods before Jesus though too? You have to realize the that the level superstition at the time was very high. I visited the Pantheon in Rome, and when you go there, you can see how many differerent gods these people worshipped and just how superstitious they were. It stands to reason that they were very susceptable to the idea of new god jesus, who no doubt had some appealing qualities that caused people to follow with fervor. Just look how many of us were suckered by a publishing corporation even in a scientific age.

Musings about different types of atheist!
by Seraphim23 ina thought that occurs to me is that if one has the belief that all that is real is only explicable in terms of particles and forces, and that nothing exists that is not one of these, then good and bad doesnt exist either, the same would be true for any concept for that matter.
or perhaps it is only true when reduced to the level of matter and forces, but without the moral force, meaning and purpose that such a materialist only description would entail.
after all, if death is forever, which is materialist view, then what does it matter if a seventy or seven year old enters the grave?

@Seraphim
Regarding the your point about the futilty of everything in light of universe that will eventually go cold, I still think we lack a great deal of data on that, and at this point drawing conclusions from that is probably premature. As others have already mentioned we can use the logic and the facts of what is happening in our observable realm now. The facts of the reality that we have observed for mellenia (endless suffering etc.) make it pretty plain that this idea of a personal and moral god of the bible is just not true. For the sake of argument though; even if some powerful supernatural force did start all of this, that all powerful force doesn't resemble the god of the bible for many reasons. I'm not going to delve deep into this, as it has already been dicussed on many other threads.
What that means though, is that whatever good morals you may have gleaned from the bible are derived from men who came to a consensus on what was good, and credited it to their superstitious notions of an almighty being in their bronze aged ignorance. I would submit that the morals you speak of, and say that atheists don't have, is simply not true because these ideas of good and bad are ultimately derived from the consensus of men anyways. Many of the things that the bible considers to be good and moral are no longer good or accepted practices (e.g slavery), showing that the bibles timeless principals to large extent are myth.
Mankinds morals are borne out through common sense, experience, and consensus.

Discussion w/ Wife: I Welcome Your Suggestions
by breakfast of champions inso these last few wts have definitely eroded my wife's faith in the org.
she is definitely seeing the bs, and i even overheard her talking openly about it to a family member.
good for her!.

I would suggest two things:
1. Ask her if she believes the preaching to be effective in her own experience, and reason with her how god could condemn someone who has their own faith for rejecting a strange watchtower. Furthermore, recall to her memory all of the time spent preaching to people that armageddon is coming soon, and now that is not the case. In other words, why spend time preaching something that is inevitably going to be false in the near future. This should tie in real nicely with what she is studying now.
2. Watch some movies with her that show how bad other parts of the world are where they don't have the freedom that western culture affords; and then, reason with her about why this freedom exists, and how the freedom that allows preaching has really been paved by the sacifices of the brave men and women who fought for it.

2014 Event
by enigma1863 ini know its a year away but i wanted to inquire about the hundred year anniversary of 1914. it would be amazing to have a world wide event reguarding all exjws.
i am nowhere near capable of putting this together but i'd like to propose the largest assembly of exjws ever on october 1st 2014. can it be done?
am i the first to bring this up?

Wouldn't it be something if the tens of thousands of former JW's out there showed up at a single District assembly in a major city? They'd outnumber the regular attendees. They could, at a prearranged time, stand up and chant over and over STAY ALIVE TILL 75 or THIS RELIGION IS A SNARE AND A RACKET. Maybe they could even storm the stage and gave a stirring TTAT talk.
That would be awesome, I would love to be there too. Doing it in NY would be the best in your face place IMHO.

I have an alternative idea too, perhaps we caould do this in addition.
So you know how many news media outlets like to report on nutters on who predict the end and then when it doesn't come they run story about it?
Why why don't we do something similair and come up with a carefully worded letter that is supported with good watchtower quotes that clearly shows their insane position of belief of 1914 as the beginning of the end. We could include in that packet various pictures from their pubs showing the "the end". We can deliver this letter/statment of facts to each of our respective local news media outlets, and have them run with the story of the 100th anniversary of a failed WTS prediction.
If we can all agree on coordinated day or week to do this, and our appeal is effective, and syncronized across the globe, we can really strike a devasting blow of public embarassment to the WTS. It could be glorious! We would have to have to have NY media outlets nailed though.
Next year or early 2015 is really our only shot at pullling off such a stunt. It would be nice to all come together and meet, somewhere (like next to their HQ) but this option saves your pocketbook for those that have to travel.
What say you?

How do believers defend a god who is going to murder billions and pin it on them?
by tootired2care inat that time those slain by the lord will be everywherefrom one end of the earth to the other.
they will not be mourned or gathered up or buried, but will be like dung lying on the ground.

But why have a bible, you ask? Because MAN needs something to SEE. He is not so good at hearing, or walking by faith. He walks by sight... until he learns to walk by faith and HEAR the Spirit (if he does learn)
The bible is a witness pointing TO CHRIST... but it is not Christ, it is not the Life; it is not the TRUTH; it is not the IMAGE of God.
Yes and Jesus endorsed the law and the prophets and what they stated, and doesn't it stand to reason that an almighty could at least get his story straight between what he allowed to be written about him versus what he tells believers in their head?

Because that 'god' is false. But you (and others) teaching that God IS like you say, as opposed to how Christ showed him to be... is also false teaching; lies about God.
No TEC i'm not teaching anything I'm only pointing out what is in his book the bible.
