Finky, the Bible's "History" is 98.776943 % Fiction, or thereabouts.
Moses and Aaron are fictional Characters, there was no Exodus from Egypt etc etc. and of course all of Judaism and subsequently Christianity can be traced back to what the Hebrews/Israelites absorbed from Egyptian and Canaanite religious beliefs and practices.
i was listening to a radio show about a jw women who had been disfellowshiped , her daughter cut off all contact ,must admit at the time i thought so what.. then this man phoned up and explained he was disfellowshiped for asking about jws being ngo in the united nations during 90s till early 2000s when a newspaper exposed them , i still thought he's a apostate but looked it up found the article then found this forum and even more info..
I was born in, became more and more interested in what the Bible really said, and one day decided to read the Book of Daniel with an open mind, got to Chapter 4, realised there was no way you could extrapolate from that the 2500 years that led to 1914, unless you were slightly bonkers.
At that point the whole JW Org teaching collapsed like a House of Cards. No 1914= no choosing of an FDS in 1919= the GB are self-appointed charlatans.
It wasn't long before I walked away for good, I gave an Elder the chance to come back to me and prove 1914, as he felt sure he could, he never came back.
a few weeks ago i had an really interesting conversation with three male jws who were loitering around a trolley at the west end of princes street in edinburgh.. i managed to completely avoid giving any hint about my jw past and focussed on why they thought the bible was a reliable moral guide.
i used the subject of slavery to illustrate my concerns.. one of the three was in his early twenties, knew a lot about his own beliefs but nothing about the real life and it was difficult to get through his thought-bubble.
the second one was in his 60s and not very bright.

I bet it does, even if he does what I did for many a year, sadly, which is to tuck such information and the conclusions it brought, right in to the depths of ones mind, but it is still there, and gradually builds up the feeling of mental struggle, which I now realise is Cognitive Dissonance.
After many years this feeling got so strong and disturbing, and frankly depressing, that I allowed myself to open mindedly research On Line, I soon found some excellent resources, was amazed at how many people were troubled by the same things as me, and soon found this wonderful Site.
I left the Org for good a few months later. Let us hope this happens to Andrew !

jw.org needs enemy's to exist.
They just have to find something to keep "The End is Sooooo Near" going in the JDumb's minds. They will no doubt keep having " adjusted understanding" of this "prophecy" every few years for that purpose as long as they exist.
The Book of Daniel was fraudulent when written, pretending to be written centuries before it really was in the mid 2nd century B.C. There is nothing in the Bible that can be taken as applying to our Day, or any later time.
No prediction in the Bible has ever come true in the terms expressed, and even " Daniel" got stuff wrong, though actually writing way after the events he was supposedly presenting as prophecy.
Has any prediction of the JW org itself ever come true as they presented it either ? I struggle to think of one, yet "Jehovah" is whispering in their ear, we are told. Got a wicked sense of humour that Jehovah !
i have been feeding my very pimi brother tidbits and clippings of all the csa issues coming to light the last five years and all the org's business dealings of hundreds of closed halls congs dissolving etc.
and reminding him of all the failed prophecies etc etc.
although he would listen and acknowledge.
I had a long talk with my Elder Bro in law shortly after I had left, and his attitude came down to what was basically a " Pascals Wager" idea, he felt that even if they were wrong, he had hedged his bets, and lost nothing.
I tried to reason that it was therefore a wasted life he was living, but that didn't get any reaction. Another Elder told me much the same, that he was quite prepared to find out that it was all wrong, and that this is in fact the only life we get.
Over a decade later, they are both still in. I think with both of them, both well known in the wider JW community, all their kids and grand kids in, and both well known in the local "worldly" community, that Pride comes in to it, they will not admit they are wrong, and that they have wasted over 7 decades of life. Sad really.

on february 21, 2020, the wt society made the announcement in their website of the release of the new world translation in modern hebrew (hebrew scriptures - "tanakh") in haifa, israel.
now, the complete nwt is available in modern hebrew.. some time ago, a poster here said that releasing (in theory, i.e.
) the hebrew bible in a modern version, such as the nwt, would be irrational.
I wonder if this is a move to ingratiate themselves somewhat with the Israeli authorities, who do not look kindly on Sects coming to convert their people. They can claim it is " Bible Education" that they have provided for free to the Israeli people, giving them their Scriptures in their modern Hebrew that they can understand and read easily.
Rubbish of course, they simply want converts, and then can claim that " Jehovah" has blessed their work, and get more donations from the gullible JW's who will see this as a wonderful thing.

i have been messing with it for years.
buying fat free powder milk, bullion cubes, rice, beans dried, and other things that has a shelf life of 25 years.
" Sounds like JW paranoia from this side of the pond" , not to me, and I am on the same side of the pond. I have been listening to some top academics and experts in this field, of communicable diseases, and they are saying it may very well affect a large proportion of the U.K population. in which case, the excellent advice in this Thread will prove to be prescient.
We have nothing to lose by being prepared, stock up on foodstuffs that can be used in an emergency, if it all comes to next to nothing, you can use them as they near their "Best Before" date anyway, oh, and don't forget the Whisky ! that doesn't go off, well it never gets a chance to in our house !
just though i'd start a thread devoted to languages, dialects/sociolects and accents, with the idea being that posters can comment on any language, or dialect or accent of any language, on this thread.. any phrases, expressions or idioms that you find interesting are also welcome.
first, the subject of english accents came up on another thread.. the british isles have many different types of accent (although many of the dialects may be dying out), and if i start to take a closer look, i can't help but see 'patterns' .... in received pronunciation of standard english, the letter r is pronounced initially, between vowels, and after consonants, e.g.
red, arrow, break.
Thanks for Posting that Vid LUHE ! Gaelic is easy on the ear ! and the lady makes a good point, recordings of people in the past who spoke nearly dead, or in fact dead, languages and dialects are so important !
It was interesting to see you express things as you so ably explained above, " I have not gone to the shop" for example. Different in Gaelic ! I agree with the similarity to the Welsh lilt, I heard that too.
