i fit in the first one...and you guys know what the deal breaker was for me.... (changing the bible to make it say what they wanted it to in the nwt...especially adding the name jehovah 237 times in the nt...or cgs....when there is zero ancient manuscript for doing so...even though rev says to not add nor delete nuttin...they added the name jehovah twelve time in rev alone....even though not a single one is a quote from the ot or hebrew scriptures!!
and that is not right either....how did we not notice that we have the only bible around with the name jehovah in the new testament.....sooo deceitful about that) (and that is the longest parentheses of my life)...lol.
Those pesky angels, I wish they would just stick to dancing on the head of a pin !
That attitude, that something is wrong with the person not the religion, is of course fostered by the WT, but it is amazing in its universality amongst the JW's
If they cannot clearly see something with which to label you, they will make it up ! The rumour mill after you have left is amazing !

i have been doing some reading about the millerites and the "great disappointment" of 1844. i cant help but to notice some similarities between the millerites and russell.. the millerites also used a prophecy of 2,520 years, but chose a different starting point.
they also appear to have initially forgotten the zero year, but later corrected their mistake.. i think it's interesting that the millerites had two prophecies that they thought pointed to 1844 (one dealing with 2,520 years and another with 2,300 years).. this kind of makes sense (if you try to relate to their world view), because the bible says that you need two witnesses to establish something.
a person can shuffle numbers in the bible all day, but it's not likely to mean much.

I remember some years ago sitting down for some hours and talking to a very old JW Elder, he was born before 1914, in the religion from the 1920's
He candidly said that much of the WT stuff was conjecture, and he said to us young JW's "Do not base a doctrine or belief on just one scripture".
Those were wise words, one "witness" is not sufficient, of course as has been said, the WT does not even have one "witness" for its 1914 drivil.
i was speaking to a neighbor who is a jw but has no idea that i used to be one.
he was talking about why he has to "spread the good news" at his place of employment and i asked him if people tend to balk once he mentions the jw's.. he stated that he uses a "spiritual tactic" to sometimes get around this problem.
he said when he hears someone talking about religious or biblical matters, he will often chime in with "what do you think about the jehovah's witnesses way of interpretation?".
I like that Carla "Your reputation preceeds you" , that is very true, I was thinking back to how whenI was young I used to hide the JW bit from everybody,evenwhen going door to door.
We were encouraged to do it,by older Dubs, to a degree.
In later years I came straight out with it, and if they didn't want to talk, fair enough. But it never made me face the question, "Why do they view us as a weird cult ?"
If I had truly squared up to that question, my exit from the weird cult may have come sooner.

Same as Cantleave, funny thing is, reading old posts on here, nearly everyone who fits the category had a different doctrine or practice that triggered their moment of "Holy Fluck its all a lie!"
It just goes to show that we are all different, and that it is all a lie, the only bits that don't get mentioned as reasons for leaving are bits accepted by other religions, all the individual bits of JW only stuff features in someones epiphany.
A great number use the expression "house of cards" to describe how the whole WT belief system fell apart in no time once the epiphany had occured.
I feel sorry for those who have left, for whatever reason, but have not expunged all JW belief and traits, there are some who have left and still hang on to a lot of baggage, they should come to JWN and read the archive on each subject or personality trait they cling to, in no time they would be totally free.
Once you are that free, you are on the way to being a Xxjw.

We are very much in agreement, dear Tammy,with what seems to be the message or import of Jesus teaching and more importantly perhaps than mere words his example, the one you offer and many more, washing his disciples feet for example.
I think that is why he had such a huge response from the people of his time, they could see in him that it worked, in their religious and political leaders they could only see something that failed, abysmally.
If only the whole world would adopt love and compassion , then we truly would have the Kingdom or Paradise or whatever you wish to label it. Greed and selfishness work against that ideal with far too much strength at present, but I have hopes.

none of us are perfect, least of all myself, and i would rather focus any criticism on the watch tower society for damaging people's lives.
however, in the short period since i've been a member of this forum i've noticed one member in particular deteriorate in his behaviour into the type of individual who threatens to undermine the credibility of the entire website.
Rick is the best spokesman the Watchtowr has at present, he is that good that he keeps captive the JW's in their prison, convinced that all they have heard from the WT, about those who leave the WT, is true.
They fear they will end up like Rick, a fate worse than death.
The problem with his presence here on JWN is that his particular brand of strident idiocy will alienate a JW stumbling upon this site, and even members of the public, that is to spike the guns of JWN.
Rick has been working hard to that end for years, it is time he was curtailed.
Tell the W.T you are finished with doing their dirty work Rick, join the genuine opposers.
i still go to meetings (sometimes) mostly to acompany my wife and kids.
i have known of jw friends of mine that have gone to elder's for family problems, dispute's with other cult member's or those hemroid's that just won't clear up.
whatever.... i personally never ever told an elder or elder's a stitch of info about my personal life or trouble's etc.
Confidentiality and Jehovah's Witness do not belong in the same sentence.
One or two out of the 7 million are the exception to the rule, just one or two.

I think we have a very real problem if we are trying to establish the "real" Jesus, and are yet using as our authority bits and pieces of the Gospels etc.
Having said that, apart from the deutero-canonical books, we have nothing else.
I think that what shines through the bias that the Gospel writers had, is something of the real charismatic preacher, Jesus, on whom the cult is founded.
The real Jesus seems ,IMHO, to be trying to get his people to get back to the primitive faith of the desert, before the Law and the Torah, so anything he did in defiance of any law or practice was not to show that the Law was deficient, but to help them ,as his brothers, not to count the "tenth of the dill" etc but to go back to the spirit of their religion, as he saw it, of treating your fellow man with love and compassion.
I believe Cofty is right, Jesus was a religious Jew, I believe though that what he was trying to show was that you could live by the law and be a complete a-hole as many of the religionists of his day were, or you could live by the law and the spirit of the law as he did, and be a good person.
If the words put in to his mouth about the GN going to the nations have any basis in fact, then I think his vision was one of the Jewish religion ceasing to be important, but Love and Compassion being the guiding lights for good to all mankind.
Today's religions, even so called christian ones, fall far short of his vision, which would not have needed a formal religion, or rules and regulations, at all.
