  Midweek Meeting looooooooong prayers.

  one thing that aggravates me is long concluding prayers, especially at the midweek meeting.

  you work all day, rush home, grab a quick bite, dress up in meeting clothes.

  then, go to the meeting.

  I remember two funny occasions where loooooooong Prayers were involved, the first was at a Circuit Convention, the guy went on and on, obviously trying to impress the C.O and D.O. with how "spiritual" he was, all of a sudden, a bro from our Congregation had had enough,and slammed his briefcase shut, stood up and loudly said " I've had enough of this !" and stomped out ! I really admire him for that !

  The second was when an Elder was obviously the worse for drink, he had been slurring his words when he took one of the parts on the Service Meeting, some fool asked him to do the final prayer, not only did it go on, it was incomprehensible and the slurring had got worse !

  He was taken to task at the next meeting by the other Elders, and admitted he had enjoyed " just a Wee Dram" ( he was Scottish) before coming to the meeting, but said he has mixed it by mistake with some Anti-biotics he was taking, and they had multiplied the effects of that Wee Dram ! They accepted his excuse, and no further action was taken .

  be aware, this thesis, although supremely stimulating, thought-provoking, fascinating, attention-grabbing, remarkable, noteworthy, and appealing, the author made use of out of the ordinary, worthy of note, and fascinating words and statements that, for the reader of average intelligence (like me), make for laborious reading.

  Thank you Barbara, for Posting this , you have given me something interesting to read during Lock Down !

  These are just my first thoughts, having read about 5 chapters, got a bit bored, and skipped to the Conclusion.

  I like the analogies used, one to the human body, and one to an org. with similarities, Alcoholics. Anon.

  The first gave me an insight in to why many of us were , and many of today's JW's are, happy to serve, for free, the " Body". I think this willingness to serve for this mainly unconscious reason, may even be a big part of the motivation of the G.B.

  The other analogy with A.A is good. To my certain knowledge the J.W org has helped a good number to break free from addiction, stay free, and make a good life for themselves. Two such people that I know well, would be dead by now had it not been for J.W's, and the org's method.

  In the Conclusion, I was struck by the two things that are mentioned as the main problems for the Org. going forward. One was the Internet, which of course Apostates contribute to, profusely, but the Net itself is a problem. Knowledge in the form of verifiable Facts and Evidence is readily available there (here).

  The other problem identified is the lack of Higher Education within the org. The suggestion is made that Study Rooms could be made available in K.H's ( when they re-open !), and even Pioneers could be encouraged to gain some Higher Education that way. I can see a problem with that, the org's penchant for rigid Control will want to make sure that the information does not rock the faith of some, and of course, they dare not encourage the development of Critical Thinking Skills. So, very different from a Uni. education.

  I will read all of it, and comment more later, no doubt.

  More on Maryland Conventions, 1970-1975! Do you Remember?

  1970 circuit assembly program, sherwood high school, maryland.. .

  rented schools were the accepted places for assemblies before 1970. the high school was used all the time.

  the last one in a school in maryland came in january 2,3,4 1970.. .

  Hi Petra ! yes, we were an unusual Congregation for the time, nearby Congregations more than likely made more of the 1975 rubbish than ours did.

  We were made up of very old folks who numbered only a few, and young ones who had grown up there, or moved in. The Elders were all "young" at the time, bar one. All of these young guys were NOT " Little Grey Society Men" as they used to call those who used to blindly tow the line.

  Shortly before I moved in, an Elder was moved there to be Congregation Servant, just pre-Elders, as the C.O was concerned things were not being done properly. He was a a reasonable guy, and told me when he got there, nobody wore a Tie on the Platform etc, none of the normal Rules stuff. That attitude continued for years, though ties were agreed to be worn. One C.O told me that he had been told by the outgoing C.O to fear going to us, we were all rebels ! The young Elders were pretty well equipped with bullshit detectors, for J.W's.

  I never owned a suit for many a year, and gave Public Talks in a jacket and kind of matching trousers (pants). And gave those talks wearing a beard, for many years.I think the easy going attitude of our probably unique Congregation, and its very good Social Life, delayed my waking up and departing much longer than if I had been elsewhere, sadly.

  The year 1975 was not actually ever really emphasised in our little rural Congregation, personally I thought it was basically an overblown expectation by the time 1975 came. So much so that though only just in to my 20's, I started paying in to a Private Pension, the rules of which said I could not draw it for almost four decades !

  I guess in some Congregations I would have been branded as disloyal and lacking in faith, well I was ! faith in their predictions. I was not alone either, as I say, the Elders never hyped 1975, and a couple of them I know started private pensions around that time, though they were about 10 years or so older than me,and may have been under rules that said they could draw on it earlier than me, but they were still looking years ahead. Hedging their bets like me.

  some recent new friends on this forum like friend kosonen are fixated with god's name being jehovah...unfortunately they are wrong:.

  a quick bit of history:.

  "about the 13th century the term “jehovah” appeared when christian scholars took the consonants of “yahweh” and pronounced it with the vowels of “adonai.” this resulted in the sound “yahowah,” which has a latinized spelling of “jehovah.” the first recorded use of this spelling was made by a spanish dominican monk, raymundus martini, in 1270.. interestingly, this fact is admitted in much jehovah’s witness literature, such as their aid to bible understanding (p. 885).

  In Hebrew it is of course written HWHY , which we then read from right to left, YHWH, the sensible way of reading LOL. In Hebrew this would be, read from right to left, yodh, he, waw and he.

  The word has been known since before the time of William Tyndale. in English, as Jehovah.

  To insist upon changing this to a more accurate pronunciation is just pointless and silly in IMHO, in general writing and conversation, though I can see why Academics may wish to do so, thye don't want to be mistaken for J.W's do they ? ha ha. As has been stated many times, the way the early Israelites pronounced it can only be guessed at.

  Many words transliterated in to English have changed dramatically since they came in to usage. Do we change them all back to something more "original" ? Good luck with that.

  The org's argument that "Jehovah" is well known and recognised is valid, their insistence on putting it in to the N.T so many times is more doubtful, and the way they have done it is deliberately not consistent, and so is dishonest. Also, their constant overuse of it is not justified, if "Jehovah" in their mind is the only god, and Jesus merely his firstborn, why use a personal name for god at all ?

  did anyone catch michael palin's travel documentary in north korea?

  it was a fascinating insight into such a secretive and controlled country.

  totalitarian, suppressed and yet i found a few similarities to jw mentality.. particularly, this segment, where michael asks his handler about the limitations on freedom she has.

  N.K uses Mind Control, as do all Cults, as do the J.W org , it is the most effective form of control to use on large numbers of people.

  As Cofty rightly says, the J.W org and similar cults, are very close to the totalitarian regimes that we have been appalled by over the years. Using Mind Control to enforce strict Authoritarianism.

  "Totalitarian" and " Authoritarian" are almost synonyms, but the merely Authoritarian State is more open to reform. The totalitarian State (or cult/religion) tries, and often succeeds, Vampire like, to change the mind and very soul of the person. Therefore the J.W org is totalitarian.
