If we don't get wiped out in some pointless war, we'll die of some plague, such as Sars. We'll try to find happiness for ourselves, maybe marry the love of our life, who may die before us, leaving us alone and miserable again. We may work in our dream job, having a vocation, from which we eventually have to retire, or be made redundant. We may amass money, but at the end of our life relatives we don't like too much will fight over it. It strikes me that in many ways it's better living with the notion that the end is near, as life pretty much sucks without it.

"Elders will go to hell"
Are we now to assume there is such a place?
I was raised as a witness with strict parental rules, but we always watched tv and going to the movies was a treat at school holidays. Show me in a WT where dubs SHOULD NOT attend movies.

Celebrating Mother's And Father's Day Is Unscriptural! You Gotta READ This!
by minimus inthe may 8, 1956 awake had the article entitled,"mother and father worship unscriptural".
it states:"nowhere in the bible do we find that parents are to be worshipped, or that there should be a father's day and a mother's day kept in their honor.
worship belongs exclusively to jehovah god, as he himself says:' i jehovah your god am a god exacting exclusive devotion'.

Of course one does not need a specific day to thank your parents for being wonderful. My personal view, unaffected by any doctrine, is that I've seen too many people send cards on 'special' days out of a sense of perfunctory duty when they often don't give a toss the rest of the time, so say how you feel whenever you feel like it, but if you require a set date to focus your mind, so be it.

Thoughts on the "Fall of Babylon"
by refiners fire inmost recently i have been examining such invisibly occurring events as the 1918 resurrection of the saints and this week ive looked into the watchtower claim that babylon the great fell in 1919. there was scant evidence and little biblical support for the wt claim about the resurrection occuring .
in fact, the key line of proof of the resurrection was that rutherford was released from jail in 1919. does the claim of babylons fall in 1919 fare better?
what is the proof offered by the wt that this, in fact, occurred?

Just out of interest, why do you only mainly refer to old publications which even the active members claim to be "out of date" in some aspects?

Did Christ start a cult?
by petespal2002 ininteresting thought.
if we say that jw's, mormons, etc.
are 'cults' because they are not affilated with any 'mainstream' religious organisation, and that their founder is a man who becomes a sort of figurehead, could not the same be said of the organisation founded by christ?

Interesting thought. If we say that JW's, Mormons, etc. are 'cults' because they are not affilated with any 'mainstream' religious organisation, and that their founder is a man who becomes a sort of figurehead, could not the same be said of the organisation founded by Christ? His followers seperated themselves off from the organized religion of the day, and could be said to have presented a fanatical view to the point of being willing to die for their beliefs. ("Greater love hath no man.") If we do not accept the Bible account as literal then Jesus was only a man who decided to found a religion that later took his name.

Charlses T Russell, WTBTS man?
by be wise ini have been researching charles t russell.
i'm just getting a bit disatisfied of hearsay one way or another.
i have basically found out that the chances of him being a freemason are divided by a lot of confusion.

By concluding with "all religious cults are essentially the same", in the context of your argument you have infered that the movement started by Jesus was a cult, which in one way it has to be if we argue that cults are always the brainchild of a man who takes the lead and acts as figurehead.

"I wonder what Jesus would have made of this society had he existed today"
Personally I wonder what we would have made of Jesus and the movement he was starting had we lived then? What would you think if someone walked up to you in the main street and said "be my follower"? There's every chance we would have thought him a nut as many then did. He'd want you to leave behind all your possessions to follow him, and in doing so there was every chance of getting killed by his enemies. To follow him would mean becoming a laughing stock to your peers and your family, and linking yourself to a ridiculed minority. You would be totally at odds with the established religion of the time/area, and what's more Jesus would send you out to preach from house to house and city to city that you were the only ones with "truth" and they didn't have a hope in hell unless they converted!
Doesn't sound that much different to being a dub.

Is it really so...????????????????????/
by petespal2002 inat the book study conversation turned to the importance of numbers and their symbolic use in bible texts.
the elder leading the study stated that he believed the number 7 was of such vital importance, that when the great crowd number 7,000,000 and the remnant 7000 the end will come.
any thoughts?

But then don't the WTBTS assert somewhere that DURING the time period of Luke 21 when men will faint out of fear because the sign of the son of man has appeared in the heavens, those who have been raised tp the heavens will be 'revealed' to those of the great crowd on earth. So the idea is wait and see who went to heaven from 1918 onwards, that it is unnecassary to know now.
