Do you feel the need to explain yourself.....?
by vitty inafter many years of having to explain why i wasnt at the meeting or fs.
i have the really annoying habit of feeling i have to explain myself.
for example, to my neighbours who never asked, why i hadnt mowed the lawn that weekend or to a friend why i hadnt phoned her for a few days.. how do i stop feeling this need to tell ppl of my short commings or flaws ???????????.

Having to explain myself I use to feel that way but don’t anymore. I think I just grew tired of it. I probably should explain myself since I am often misunderstood but life is just too short.

Why didn't the preaching work stop prior to 1975?
by plmkrzy inwhy didn't the preaching work stop prior to 1975?
it doesn't look like it's going to stop anytime soon either.
i raised this question before i stopped attending the meetings in the late 90's and the answer i was given was, "it has slowed down a lot and will eventually stop when the time is right".

OUTLAW it would be interesting to know how much Real Estate the society purchased during the 70's compared to any other time. I’d like to find out but how would someone go about getting that kind of info? It would be interesting to know.

Do you come from a family that totally avoids talking about problems ?
by troubled mind ini do.... when i was young my mom kept us from speaking to my non witness dad about anything that might upset him .we also could not openly share our problems of being witnesses at school, like the ridicule we endured for not saying the pledge or celebrating holidays .
we had to say we were happy not having birthday parties even if that really was not true .
my husband was raised in an abusive household and must have learned some of those same lessons .

I come from an extremely dysfunctional family which had a tremendous bearing on my upbringing,
Double dittos. Raised by the wtbts handbook for rearing children.
In all fairness I have known a few JW families that were pretty together but I bet if a poll were taken we would probably see more dysfunction in JW families then functional. It would seem that dysfunctional people flock to the sense of order found in belonging to an organized society.
I know one particular sister that is the “ONLY” JW member in her family and somehow maintains a great relationship with her non-believing husband and grown children. Don’t know how she does it but it works for her.

144K. Were they just the really crazy ones?!? How did they get the call?
by Sailor Ripley ini remember this sister that used to come to the memorials, not sure where she was the rest of the time, that would partake of the offering.
i mean she would take a gulp of the vino and the bread and not one person said a thing.
how did they know they were a part of the super friends?

Actually, if you had been a member of the WTS (Bible Student) between 1879 and up to 1930, most likely everyone in the congregation would have been anointed and partaking at the Memorial.
Probably even much later then that in many places. I wasn’t born yet so I have no memory of it, but my grandmother use to partake in the 30’s and maybe even into the 40’s. I don’t know when she stopped, but my mother never stopped. There was a time when both my mother and grandmother were partaking, my grandmother stopped but my mother continued. This would have been well into the 30's. Late 30's at least.
I couldn't say one way or another if my mom is really anointed or just thinks she is or just wants to be. Lately if I HAD to guess I would guess no but what do I know. Her entire congregation believes she is anointed including the PO and his wife, they've told me so. She has slipped into Alzheimer’s pretty deep the past few years and not a whole lot of anything makes much sense when it comes to her behavior other then illness. However, there was a time when she seemed to be sharp enough to even break away from the society. I remember many times her showing her disgust toward the GB and the things they would "feed" to the congregations. I think she must have believed the screw-ups from Brooklyn were part of bible prophecy. She would excuse them.

Hey - first time here
by kimoko inhello i am megan tis my first time here (hence the title :) ) so i just thought i would introduce myself.. i've never actually never been actually been a jehovahs witness but i first actually got introduced to it in january when i met the amazing kw13 haha :) since then ive looked at books, articles and had a wonderous time on the friday of the 2006 3 day jw convention .
i'm trying to help karl get his mum out of the witnessing, hopefully we can get through its not gonna be easy but we are optimistic.
its been a real difficult time for me trying to understand the witnessing because it went from 16 years of just knowning them as them people who bother you at your door to getting to know alot more and their "morals".

Hi connections, welcome to the forum. I was away for a few days and just read your Q.
What do you mean by " Why didn't the preaching work stop prior to 1975?" ;
Apparently it is old light now but in short, there was a time when the book of Mathew was interpreted as meaning or prophesying that just before the end, in the last days, all Jehovah’s Witnesses would be oppressed, and the preaching work will stop. (but not before every person on earth received a Watch Tower and Awake)
So, since that never happened prior to 1975 (1970,1971,1972,1973 and 1974 the preaching work was strong as ever and the government never made it against the law to be a Jehovah's Witness) I never understood how they could assume the end was even remotely close to 1975 or 1976 or 1977 or 1978 or 1979 and so on and so on. It just never made a lick of sense.
