I chose Preston becuase on the Internet Movie Data Base http://www.imdb.com my screen name is Preston-10, so if you're ever on the boards around there look me up, I post stuff about movies all the time there. I originally chose the name "Preston" in honor of one of my favorite classic film directors: Preston Sturges. I also like the name Preston because it's a good, strong name... like me.

WT July 1, 2001 (part II)
by Defender inthe second study article and the ensuing reading article contain many interesting points.
i thought of sharing some of them with you.. the second article entitled share in the joy of giving carries with it many positive admonitions, but mostly centered around the spiritual side of giving where the main thrust is on disciple making.. while it is true that disciple making is gods will but we must remember that it is gods paramount will that we ourselves become true disciples to jesus christ.
becoming disciples to an organization, to a religion, to a man or a group of persons and then engage in adding more persons to such discipleship is not what god or jesus intended.. on page 17, par 16 there it says; remember, too, that the disciple making work is a group effort.

"Religious exhortations to the effect that you should just believe and should doubt nothing are dangerous and deceptive.”
I wonder if the WBTS really understands the significance of that statement. It seems like if you're a JW, any doubts you have must be resolved with the end result being full confidence in Jehovah's Organization. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen for a lot of people, just look at the number of debates on this web site that have clearly contradicted many of the Society's views on blood, sexuality, the door-to-door work, the identity of the "Faithful and discreet slave". For me, it's the ultimate crisis of conscience, when you believe in your heart what you truly feel to be the truth and being coerced to preach otherwise.

The C.O. and elder came to my house last night!
by Sarah inplease tell me i made the right decision.
last night the co and another elder showed up at our house just 5 minutes after my husband got home from work (i think they were sitting on the side of the road just waiting for him to come home)*stalkers*, anyway to make along story short, the pressure was on.
i felt like they were there to get us to da ourselves.

I don't know how the rest of you guys feel but tears were streaming down my face by the time I was done reading Sarah's post. You have no idea how sad I feel hearing what you went through Sarah. I have met *FEW* elders in my life who were capable of showing loving consideration and positive affection toward people. You and your husband are 100 times the person either one of those elders are, and it takes real balls (if you can excuse me for saying this) telling them off like you did. You are an amazing person and the level of candor that you displayed is exemplary. I hope I have encouraged you in some way! *MANY MANY HUGS*

Ever notice that JW's fall for marketing scams?
by bboyneko ini remember that many jw's were falling for amway scams here in the us.
one of amway's latest scams was quixtar, some internet online mall that is a complete rip-off.
quixtar even used cult-like language, making up new words.

bboyneko, what you have just described is a wide reality in and outside the congregation. I did happen to know of several people in the congregation who were duped into multi-level marketing schemes. It really is a shame, most of the information you can find about businesses are right here on the web, even on the Better Business Bureau's Web Site. Of course, you'd think that many JW's would simply utilize the society's positive view of critical thinking. Right? RIGHT?!? Yeah, Right...

Hi Spike, I just wanted to tell you the experiences of a person I knew who had a mental disability from a car accident and got baptized. My friend Barry was a sweet, caring, loving, trying person in my congregation. He had a passion for the ministry, and he loved God. He went for special schooling in the area that I lived, and every time he had a talk, I helped him prepare it. I was one of the few people he knew in the congregation as a friend because many people felt uncomfortable being around him. I was upset that he had problems fittting in. I took him out in service many times and I took him out to lunch becuase I wanted him to make him feel a little better about himself. At the time though, I didn't spend that much time with him becuase I was starting college and my social life wasn't exactly the most exemplerary. On more than one occasion he would tell me how upset it made him not to have any friends in the congregation. You wouldn't believe how bad this made me felt. He eventually got baptized at the peak of his desire to derve God forever. On the night of the meeting where his baptism was announced several persons came up to him and shook his hand. The sad truth is, I never saw him as happy after that. In the next months he became bitter and told me that he wished he never got baptized. It made me seriously wonder about the whole baptism process that he went through. Since then his mother died in a car accident and he's changed congregations. Now I can only wonder why I didn't try to reach out to him more. Barry, where are you?

Funny Moment at Witness Wedding
by metatron inimagine a large well-funded wedding reception for.
an elder's so.
they play music and everybody's.

We once had a Ministerial Servants meeting where the Presiding Overseer said that there were important matters to be discussed... child abuse? suicide? intolerance? No! he warned us that too many people had been pleaying YMCA and The Macarena at their weddings. GROAN! Witnesses are ultra-homophobic. They even forbade us from listening to David Bowie becuase he was deemed as being a "bad influence". What a way to live... I hope one fo these days some of the elders in the congregation I attended will step out of their caves and live the 21st Century just like the rest of us...Anywho...

by alex ini'm thinking that the mind-control games are very very very very much the same between mormonism and jwism.

BTW, Alex, you mentioned in your list of topics of concern to discuss with Mormon missionaries that MMM would be a good topic. Is this a refernce to the Mountain Medows Massacre? Id this really a topic that many Mormons know about. I've known about it for a long time.

Hi Alex, I just saw your post and I wanted to point out that here in Arizona a LDS politician (State Rep. Jeff Flake) has been raising eybrows over proposing a law that would do away with standardized jail sentences in Arizona. His statements run parallel to his calling for the release of a 78 year-old child molester (Daniel F. Walsh) who was a friend in his LDS church. Many have called his defense sincere, misguided, and wrong. By speaking out against standardized jail sentances and by asking a judge to keep the molester out of prison Flake has garnered just enough bad publicity to put a dark cloud over the rest of his career. His actions are an insult to our system of justice.
