  Question: Why is China building up its military?

  Answer: Because it can afford to. it's also preparing in the event of a Western military intervention with its neighbors in Burma and North Korea. Just because they arent the target doesnt mean they wont be affected.

  No nation can be a world power without building its military might, and China is on its way in becoming the most powerful nation on Earth.

  It is true that compared to other periods in our nations history that the US is spending less as a pertentage of its GDP on its military budget but its also true that the US has also changed the physical aim and construction of its military in the past 60 years since WWII.

  Our department of defense, not to mention the various departments in place to protect the US have resigned to the fact that newer technology will not be the cure all to its current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. As Gen David Petraeus stated before congress there is no military solution to the problems in Iraq.

  On the domestric front, the Military will need to employ a sleeker PR methood in order to sign up and retain people into the military besides offering them a 20,000.00 bonus.

  These are some of the challenges our military will ultimately have to resolve in the new century as it competes against China's military with its unlimited manpower. Most of the military buildup I think is the country's accepting its status as possibly THE world power, not necessarily for its military might but its growing economy and financial sector.

  the latest tabloid in check out lines has brought the sinclair scandal out into the public eye - and although i haven't heard it yet, i understand that rev manning has a damning video on youtube.

  larry craig was vilified - would the same people who vilified him still vote obama in and why?

  I've seen a few thousand movies in my lifetime, the following are pretty good:

  Sansho the Baliff, Three Colors: Red, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Once Upon a Time in the West, Charley Varrick, Fanny and Alexander, The Straight Story, L' Atalante, Bad Day at Black Rock, Miller's Crossing.

  Recent movies I liked.... The King of Kong and The Lookout.

  "Why does America always bomb other countries?", my son asked tonight.

  first of all i do not want to turn this into an american bashing thread, that is not my intention at all.. i would like to hear americans opinions as to what my thirteen year old son asked me tonight.. on the way back from swimming tonight my two sons (13 and 11) and myself started talking about wars.

  my 11 year old was the first to bring it up talking about wwi & ww2.

  we had an interesting conversation about it, then the subject got onto nuclear bombs.

  "Why does America always bomb other countries?"

  I think when I was a kid this was a question I did ask my parents. I think at a certain age you see the world in a different way, and I think that has to be taken into consideration.

  I always try to get a different understanding on how our country is portrayed in other nations by reading their papers and seeing their news programs (er.. programmes) . I don't think the USA is, well, that bad. I differ and disagree on almost everything that pretty much reflects our nation's current foreign and domestic policy but,.. we really just don't bomb other counties probably to the extent that those young children think we do within the context of their own life experiences. We also help a lot of countries. We've helped middle eastern countries hurt by earthquakes, we've sent our armies into harms way to help the afflicted, and we even offer to send aid to countries that refuse to be helped.

  Another thing is that our defense industry has a lot of power within the country despite Eisenhower's farewell address regarding the influence of a "military industrial complex". Companies like Boeing and GD have industries in almost every state in our country and minimizing their buying power would result in a lot of job losses and voter constituencies that help state economies and ultimately elections.

  I honestly think this wouldn't be an issue if we didn't invade Iraq and decided to target a country that never attacked us. We had an excellent opportunity after 9/11 to be the most popular country in the entire world, and we blew it. Even countries like Iran were creating vigils in our behalf.

  I do think in our country that we are also going through a period of time reflective of a generational change that seeks better, more innovative ways to promote peace in the world. I hope things pan out well.

  I read your story str8 and I'm sorry you went through that. You're livin in Sydney now? Pooftah capital of Austtralia! Sorry, just saw Wolf Creek.

  I can relate to the anguish of reconciling your romantic feelings in a religion that has so much hatred and doesnt really accept the idea of love, or loving another person.

  I hope your family lets go of the BS and realizes Christ didn't die for their bigotry. It gets better the longer you are out of that religion.

  yesterday, when i was driving to work i heard on the radio that ingmar bergman had died.

  i was a big, big fan of his.

  he really was a master filmmaker, he truly knew more about us than anyone else; what its like to grieve, to see the world through the eyes of a child, to know the pain of love, and loss.

  Yesterday, when I was driving to work I heard on the radio that Ingmar Bergman had died. I was a big, BIG fan of his. He really was a master filmmaker, he truly knew more about us than anyone else; what its like to grieve, to see the world through the eyes of a child, to know the pain of love, and loss. He created films that had a depth that seemed to make all other directors pale in comparison. Seeing THE SEVENTH SEAL when I was about 12 ultimately decided for me what I liked as a movie fan. When Terminator 2 came out when I was a kid, It just seemed more fascinating to watch a film where an acting group decided to take a road trip during the Black Plague. Most of his films will be remembered for two things.... 1.) Long Swedish ruminations of the really big questions: Where is God? Why are we here? Why is there suffering? Why can people be so evil? What does it mean to love? 2.) The Swedish babes that were in them. Homer referred to him in an episode of the Simpsons as "some Swedish meatball" - Preston

  Spiderman 3 (Spoilers, do not read unless you want the movie ruined)

  i went and saw spiderman 3 this last weekend and wondered what others thought of it.

  i liked it, but felt there was a lot less storyline covered, which seems to be the problem with all of marvels third installments (x3).

  i wished it could have had more time with venom, and not the quick battle at the end, that ended all to quick.

  The film works well up to a point.... Did anyone find it ironic that Peter Parker's girlfriend was exploited by the film to the extent that she was and that he gave his enemies more respect than he gave her? It almost makes me wonder if Kirsten Dunst would consider making another Spiderman film. (Spoilers) - She gets fired from her job - Clocked by Peter Parker in the 'Fever' dance sequence - Kidnapped by Harry - Blackmailed by Harry - Suspended by Venom and The Sandman in a Taxi - Cheated on by Peter / Spiderman I know that a lot of this works into the storyline (love lost, love regained) and the downer ending works... but I dunno... she was portrayed as.... too helpless, donchya think? Even THAT is antitypical of the movie-superhero genre. - Preston
