In the halls I attended, there also were a large number of elders and MS. Typically, they were assigned all the duties as they had already "reached out" and were now able to be "rewarded" with "priveleges". In other halls lacking in so many servants, the elder body would next look to select those who might appear to be reaching out. Thus, the standards could be lowered because of need and availability. The WTS would "prefer" that all duties be handled by "qualified" publishers. The definition of qualified is subject to interpretation. This is all before nepotism is factored in. I've seen "qualified" 12 year old kids handling mikes, seating people, and doing sound in some congregations.

current or recent jw's? especially elders.... what
by surferdude inwhat were or are the qualifications for certain "responsibilities" around the hall?
our hall literally has only ms or elders --- attending, doing stage set up, handling book counter/service desk, and reading wt and closing the service meeting with song and prayer.... the only exception is the young son of a high ranking elder at our hall... they put the restrictions that a ms has to meet on these activities, i am regular, but not active enough in the service although i assured them i was "doing the best i could" (3 - 5 hours a month) but they acted like that was terrible.... we had a heated discussion for 30 minutes.... .

Why did YOU want to live forever??
by Scully inwhat was it about living forever that appealed to you when you were a jw?.
was it the idea that you'd have all the time in the world to do whatever you wanted to do?
were you thinking about travelling the world and seeing it all transformed into a paradise?

so many things to do...clean up after armageddon...a "quick clean"...have my kids play with lions and tigers and snakes...take over a mansion that didn't get destroyed...be a prince in the new order in charge of Hollywood, Ca....greet people from the dead and tell them to be good or they'll be destroyed forever, again...
and all this in just the first 'day"...wow

Should local KH change its name?
by badboy inmy local kh is called fort hill,a very milistaric name.. any suggestions, what they should call the kh instead?.
they can't call it after the estate(winklebury) because it has milistaric/pagan connections!.
neither basingstoke, because it is named after a man, and that would b creature worship!.

If You're No Longer An Elder Or M.S.-- You're Zero
by minimus inone of the most interesting things about no longer being a m.s.
or elder is that when the circuit overseer comes around to visit, no mention is ever made of the person.
it's like they never even existed!

Good point Minimus...in many congregations when one "steps aside" the "friends" really don't know how to take it...many feel something is wrong...like you've contracted some disease and they don't want any part of it...others, too"shy" to ask what happened...they'd rather wait to get the scoop in the rumor mill shortly rather than approach you...even the other elders don't really know how to act and consider you in you new "fallen" position...It's like you've fallen off the "Celestial Chariot" and now must fend for yourself...very little thanks from anyone despite years of "service" in many people's behalf (very very sad). Many of couse (like myself) are just manuevering for the door!. Stepping aside is just a first step...The CO fagetabouit!!...he could care less...there's too many other issues in his face...you're no longer a commendable example...

Was this fire caused by Satan...or was Jehovah sending a message...either answer is right!

Fire rips through unfinished assembly hall By Kristina Wells
Times Herald-Record
[email protected]
Newburgh A fast-moving fire tore asunder the aspirations of an entire congregation yesterday.
The Assembly Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on Route 17K was near completion when the blaze broke out yesterday afternoon and destroyed a significant portion of the building.
Jerry Canfield, town of Newburgh fire inspector, said the blaze appears accidental. Workers using a blow torch somehow ignited the insulation in the roof and the fire spread from there, he said.
"There's a lot of smoke damage throughout the whole building and fire damage to 30 percent of the building," Canfield said, adding that the fire is still under investigation.
The hundreds of volunteers from the congregation who toiled on the hall for more than a year vowed to rebuild.
"It's disappointing because you have many professional volunteers who gave of their time," said Jeff Baker, congregation chair of the construction committee. "We'll certainly be ready to rebuild."
The hall will serve 25,000 Jehovah's Witnesses, Baker said.
All of the workers were evacuated and there were no injuries, Baker said. The volunteers, all skilled laborers and members of the congregation, watched as more than a dozen fire companies and an estimated 100 firefighters put out the fire.
"They're qualified, skilled people. They're real tradesman and they know what they're doing," Canfield said.
The Good Will Fire Department responded to the blaze shortly after 4 p.m. and found the south portion of the hall engulfed in flames. They called for assistance from fire companies in Ulster, Orange and Dutchess counties. -

Any bethelites or ex on the forum? I was in the local congregation (Bloomingburg - very near the farm). Though not a bethelite myself, I and my family enjoyed many fun times with a number of those from the farm. Some names include: Pearson, DiMarco, Campbell, Patterson, Singelton, Baker, Ashton, et al. Interested to see if some are now "out" or still "persevering".
