Your Cheesiest/Silliest/Strangest WTScans
by Stephanus ini've been enjoying scanning bits and pieces of ruth's old 'tower magazines.
many of us will have old copies of the literature lying around, so why not scan something that's particularly meaningful to you?
here's my offering to start the ball rolling.

The underground route to the new system
by RunningMan ini heard a rather disturbing phrase recently.. i know a jw who is suffering from bi-polar disorder.
he is periodically institutionalized, and has tried suicide on at least one occasion.
although i cant personally begin to fully comprehend what he is going through, he made a statement that i found strangely disturbing.

I am touched by the compassion of that Awake article. I'ts almost as touching as when they admitted that some of the colored friends might be smart enough to understand those complicated Watchtower articles afterall.

Thank God We Are Free At Last!
by professor injehovah's witnesses are hereby set free by these words in the bible:.
"if a prophet speaks in the name of the lord and what he says does not come true, then it is not the lord's message.
that prophet has spoken out of his own authority, and you are not to fear him.

gambling again.... any experiences?
by surferdude inafter the recent awake dealing with gambling(still with no biblical reason not to) i still feel that gambling in moderation is fine.
i know in the "flock" book gambling is not the sin, greed is.
it also says that we should try not to see gambling for entertainment as good, however it does not come out and say "dont gamble or you will be in trouble".

Good one searcher,
I've never gotten into gambling. It seems like a waste of money, especially because I always lose.

Why Is Smoking A Disfellowshipping Offense?
by twain30 inthe main reason given in the 1973 watchtower was that smoking is tied in with spiritism because the greek word which is rendered as spiritism is pharmakia' which literally means "druggery," (see galatians 5:20.
) therefore the argument was made that by smoking we put ourselves under spiritistic or demonic control.
for the last 20 years i haven't heard this reason used.. today the reasons given are that smoking shows no respect for your body as well as for life and that smoking doesn't show love of neighbor.

In California you are disfellowshipped from just about everywhere for smoking.

There have been various theories, but the one that seems most plausible is that it comes from the Greek monogram for Jesus, IHS or IHC. This is formed from the first two letters plus the last letter of His name in Greek (the letters iota, eta, and sigma; in the second instance, the C is a Byzantine Greek form of sigma). The H is actually the capital letter form of eta, but churchgoers who were unfamiliar with Greek took it to be a Latin H.
The oath does indeed seem to be American, first recorded in print at the end of the nineteenth century, although around 1910 Mark Twain wrote in his Autobiography that the expression had been in use about 1850 and was considered old even then. Its long survival must have a lot to do with its cadence, and the way that an especially strong emphasis can be placed on the H.
Nineteenth-century Americans weren't the first to take the Greek letters to be Latin ones - since medieval times the monogram has often been expanded into Latin phrases, such as Iesus Hominum Salvator, Jesus Saviour of Men, In Hoc Signo (vinces), in this sign (thou shalt conquer), and In Hac Salus, in this (cross) is salvation.

The Dreaded Elder Visit
by Big Tex ini just need to get this off my chest.
my wife, nina, received a visit tonight from her book study conductor and his wife.
now she's made every meeting since i stopped going 14 years ago.

If the elder was so concerned about what was being said in front of the little wifey, why was she brought along on a shepherding call? In reality he has to go ask Mommy Watchtower what to do next. It may be too late to fade out now. Now that she has voiced doubts, she must either be re-assimilated or eliminated.

Looks like Junior is trying to clean up the mess dad left him. He probably doesn't realize that with every move he makes towards attacking Saddam, he unravels the global coalition against terrorism that he is riding on.

I am sorry for your loss, Tammy.
It is only human nature for you to feel the way you do. The old testament required grieving time for widows. Anyone who tells you not to cry at a funeral is sick. It is not surprising, though. The Witnesses really would rather you deny your emotions, such as the sadness of giving up your family because they are disfellowshipped, the pain of denying your child medical treatment, or the sympathy and compassion for a young child who has been molested.
