For those who grew up a JW . . .

does it ever surprise you when you see people that you grew up with as a jw and they're still witnesses?

i went to school with a lot of those jw kids my age and i can't believe that they continue to be jws when they are free of their parents.. i want to say," you're an adult with a high school education or a ged!

Hi all,

Even though I was 5 when my Mom joined, she got her whole side of the family into it. As a result, all my relatives are dubs. My Dad joined; his parents thought he was nuts. We were allowed very little contact with my Dad's parents from when I was 5 onward.

Anyway, I knew something was not right. They showed pics of children and animals being killed during the "tribulation." And all the kids in school were "bad associations."

I was able to fade away when I was 20. I did think the big A was coming in 1975, so I got dipped. However, my heart was not in it. I figured, I was a good kid and Jehovah would not kill me! (but I still got dipped )

I was able to walk away from it. I had no friends in it. My family is quite dysfunctional and many JW members do not speak to one another for stupid personal reasons. I was lucky.

I did mention to my mother that when the big A occurs (she is a firm believer) she will never see my sister and I again. We both have stated we do not believe in God. We will not survive. (not that I believe it will happen; I was trying to open her eyes) So far, nothing. She said she had to go and hung up. This was last night. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I will stop rambling.....

ENRON Suicide on news....

the msnbc news alert has yet to go off on this, yet the local morning show just signed off with the breaking news that someone in the "case" has committed suicide.. i've got it on fox tv news right now, yet nothing has been reported.. anyone else hear this yet?.

Per MSNBC: Former Vice Chairman, Cliff Baxter, was found by police with a suicide note, in his car. They are not clear if he was apart of the group who would be testifying. They are not saying how he died.

Are you really ready for big moral issues?

while reading the abortion thread on this site today, i was reminded of a college class i took on dealing with ethical and moral issues.

i learned something interesting in this class and it was that just because we have strong beliefs about something, it doesn't give us any rights to impose our beliefs on others.. this is of course the "christian" way...to demand that their beliefs should be the standard by which we all live our lives.

this intolerance, or in milder cases disgust for nonconformers, is in itself one of the huge moral issues we face.. essentially, regardless of things being right or wrong, our world defines societal norms by community standards.

Since I jumped feet first into the abortion thread...here goes.

I would like to say that I would put the children in. However, if it is survival and I am not on the set of the "Titanic", I would be inclined to try to get one of the spots on the raft. Survival of whoever can get into the raft first.

Since time would be of the essence, it might come down to who could get into the raft first. Then try to fit more people in. Then try to find a way to save the others. I would also look for seat cushions. They promote them as flotation devices. Try to get a few and hang on, or have the whoever did not make it to the raft hang on.

Climbing in and floating away would make for a miserable existence later. The guilt of what you could have/should have done would weigh on my mind.

PS..I must note, I do not have children and cannot know what losing one would be like. If I had one, I would put my child in first...then look for a cushion.

I WAS MOLESTED BY THE PRESIDING OVERSEER IN THE CONGREGATION FOR SEVEN YEARS AND AT NO TIME WAS MADE TO BELIEVE THAT IT WAS MY FAULT BY THE ELDERS AND CONGREGATION WHEN I FINALLY TOLD. THIS MAN WAS DISFELLOWSHIPPED IN A MATTER OF 7 DAYS. AND 5 DIFFERENT BROTHERS FROM BETHEL CALLED AND ENCOURAGED ME AND TOLD ME TO DO WHAT I HAD TO DO AGAINST HIM, THEY NEVER TOLD ME NOT TO TELL THE POLICE

Why did she not go to the police?! She does not say she went to the police!

Why is/was not this elder prosecuted?! He should be in jail for rape and molestation and every other violation of common law.

What ever arguement she has of repentance and praying....BULLSHIT!

The person who did this needs to be in jail. I hope she is encouraged to prosecute. If he did it for 7 years, he will do it again. He must be stopped!

Now I know why my sister was always trolling around the assembly hall! She said she was bored. I tried to follow her everywhere. Good thing...I am sure she rode the wild pony during the breaks!

It even makes more sense on why Mom started trolling...in her 30's and divorced!

Both threads are great. I have done everything wrong to try to make my mother see the light. This thread points out, perfectly, what she is fearful of.
