so i thought i was a pretty accepting person.
sure i grew up in a bigoted cult who hates gay people.. now i'm an atheist who has no reason to care about anyones sexual prefferences.. .
but i've watched inverviews of trans people.

last week, i told you i was going to tell my daughter that i was leaving the truth this weekend and you all gave me sound advice.
but, i cannot keep a secret this heavy from the person i love most on this earth, my only daughter, who is beautiful inside and out.. well, i have always had an open and honest relationship with my daughter, and i guess it paid off.
this weekend i visited my daughter (who lives in another state) and i told her i was leaving "the truth.
all the very best to you

it comes on the national geographic channel and it's about young people who choose to leave the amish faith/way of life, the backlash from their families, and their adjustment to the "outside" world.
it's fascinating for me to watch.
some of the experiences are unique to amish, but so much of it is similar to what people feel when they decide they no longer want to be witnesses.
There was something like that a couple of weeks here in QLD on the abc.
It reminded me quite abit of JW's and their superstitions, they even had to follow a certain same color for their buggies,( depending where they lived) same-approved lengths on their braces, and buttons or clips. Lots more little things totally irrelevant to anything, just controlling.
The 2 young guys most of this was about and their famillies had been shunned, they had questioned the elders and their teachings as far as hypocrisy to what the bible really said and so on, One of them had a sick daughter just diagnosed with leukimia, they were very matter of fact that if she died than that was what the lord wanted, but the rest of the family that did shun them also went and cleaned the house, mowed the lawns and left food. All with a quiet humility, sad you could see they loved them and felt for them but the 'rules' did'nt allow for contact.
It made me really understand that whether your in with Amish, Scientologists, JW's Mormans whatever, it really is a crock of highly organised/controlled BS.
as we heard my aussie drinking mate mate geoff jackson of the governing body is engaged to a woman less the half his age......ozzie ozzie ozzie....oooooy oooooy ooooy!!!!!!
before we take him on his "aussie bucks night" and leave him handcuffed to a sheep....i have great news.. he told me a new watchtower is coming out next month saying: "elders can no longer police any sexual practices between a husband and wife.." {he then winked and threw me another fosters beer} go you dog yeaaaaaaaah!
just in time for his honeymoon.
Whooo Hooo Gympie Muster!!!!!
if i may ask, for those on this site, who still believe in a god in their own way... why do you still believe in a god?.
since every thing in the bible can be shot down with reason, why would you still believe in a god?.

about three years ago my wife went through a bout of problems with her eyes, double vision, trouble focusing and the like.
after weeks of going to specialists etc no one knew for sure what it was and after a few weeks it went away by itself.
a couple of weeks ago it came back along with some other symptoms, notably weakness and pain in her legs.
Hi Jeff,
sorry to hear that
to your wife and much positive/healing energy as well.

But is advised if out in public.
since there seem to be a number of threads in this spirit, i'd like to ask how others became atheists.
for myself, i learned some things that made me understand the bible wasn't true.
i looked deeper, and it became even more unlikely.
Its not just atheists that would get pissed off at missing out on
'BEER BATTERED ONION RINGS'
hope you're getting your fill these days, maybe you could have them with devilled sausages !
Ummm Back to thread now...

Yes NC you sure can fill a page on these threads pretty fast :))
thanks for your reply, it certainly helps me to understand you more and I guess have a little more patience (not that you're asking for it ) I actually thought of you last night (yes very sad I know) but I was watching a show on the bible belt in America,(scary place) and I was amazed at the small train of thought most of the people interviewed would allow themselves, it made me think of you, I thought if a person lived there they would not even be able to express there views as to why they did not believe, it seemed very well 'tight knit' in regards to belief. It also made me think well if I was an atheist I'd be pretty f..... off I could'nt express my beliefs, just the same as any one else.
Theres alot to consider, I am thankful I'm in a place where whatever you believe is pretty much ok, as long as your not a total arsehole, I don't know where you are in the state's but I think the geographics of it all may have something to do with peoples frustration.
In all honesty, I feel extremely out of my depth with all of this, and can feel quite intimidated to even pose a few questions on the board for 'fear' of being labelled a complete 'dumbarse' but hey if don't ask you'll never know, so thanks for taking the time out and explaining a little bit about you.
.
if you're an ex-atheist, what changed your mind?.
please be as brief or comprehensive as you'd like.
Just checked out that 'goodnews' thread Interested one, thank you
Maybe in the end it all just boils down to quite simply put, How we personally look at it all, I want to be glass half full kinda girl, but sometimes I still see it as half empty, even after letting go of WTBTS beliefs.
Give it time
