I recently finished a fascinating book called "The Cold War : A New History" by John Lewis Gaddis. Gaddis is the Robert A. Lovett Professor of History of Yale University. Once again I cannot help but be struck by the incredible similarity between the Soviet Union and the Watchtower Society. Metatron and VM44, I highly recommend this book, I think you will really enjoy it.

Is Watchtowerism "Boolean"?
by metatron inok, a little odd, but how else do you articulate it?.
let me explain: i spent some time with some catholics who are very loyal to their church.
nevertheless, they openly agree that priests.

Darcy, I've enjoyed reading this thread very much. You remind me a little bit me 25 years ago when I decided after being raised in "the truth" to leave and go attend college. I even read Ayn (please don't pronounce it "Ann") Rand. You mention that you dabbled in Wican. Have you ever examined what the Watchtower perjoratively labels as "Christendom?" I have found that the non-denominational Christian church I attend has taught me more about the Bible and the love of Jesus than all my twenty-four years of attending the Kingdom Hall. You need to spend more time in the ministry. I suggest you pioneer. I was a pioneer for five years and this played a vital part in my rejection of the Watchtower. How so? (with a tip of the cap to Fred Franz) It was in the ministry that I met decent Christian people. I conducted Bible studies with them but in reality they were studying with me. Learn about "Christendom" from a source other than the Watchtower. Read more books. Especially "1984" by George Orwell. Learn about the "memory hole" and the "Ministry of Truth." Read "A Distant Mirror" by Barbara Tuchman. Research the word "Preterism." Learn all you can and have fun. My college years were in many ways the best of my life. It's a wonderful thing to be able to form and express ideas without fear. Good night and Good Luck Bob Skari

Scriptures You Will Not Hear at the 21-05-06 Church Sermon.
by scout575 in"but when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily i say unto you, ye shall not have gone over the cities of israel till the son of man be come.
" ( matthew 10:23 ).
"for the son of man shall come in the glory of his father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

The end came in 70 AD. All the scriptures you list have been fulfilled. Google the word "preterism."

Where did Rutherford go to school?
by VM44 inthe story is that rutherford was so determined to go off to school that he hired a man to take his place as a worker on his father's farm.. eventually rutherford got a job in a lawyer's office, but i do not recall that the school that rutherfrod attended has ever been mentioned.. shorthand is the only subject by name that it is known that rutherford studied.. what this indicates to me is that rutherford attended some sort of trade school rather than a college.. if he had attended and graduated from a college, rutherford would have certainly listed it as one of his accomplishments.
he was that type of person.. --vm44

I also wonder if one's admission to the bar could be helped by political connections. Remember that Rutherford was politically active in the campaigns of William Jennings Bryan. Perhaps his political positions reflected that of his mentors and he benefited from the old boys network.

I don't believe that Rutherford went to college or law school. If I remember correctly at that time you didn't need to graduate to sit for the bar exam. I am sure that if Rutherford had any education at all that he would have bragged about it on a continuous basis, just like his protege Fred Franz, the supposed Rhodes Scholar who in actuality was a dropout from the University of Cincinnati.

The "Sovereignty" Doctrine is Stupid
by metatron inperhaps some of you had to suffer thru the society's latest special talk in which they rehashed the idea that our evil world exists.
because satan's challenges have to be answered.. .... but no one ever reasons on what a truly dumb idea this is!.
the dumb part of it is the fact that jehovah is said to sustain the universe, "making it rain upon the wicked and the righteous".. there is simply no way that god could be challenged on a "moral" basis since there is no way to ever prove that god.

Only JW's teach this doctrine. The idea that there is a universal court case in which Satan is the plaintiff and Jehovah is the defendant and we are "Jehovah's witnesses" is an idea that sprung from the fertile imagination of the attorney who invented this silly irrelevant little sect.

"Neutrality" is Nonsense
by metatron ini have observed some people drifting away from the watchtower who will acknowledge that most witness beliefs are false.. however, they may still cling to "neutrality" as a means of assuring themselves that "it's still the truth".
the witness idea of neutrality is naive.
as entire nations now mobilize for wars, the idea that you are somehow 'not part of it'.
-
r51785
I agree that neutrality is nonsense. Are you familiar with the Catholic doctrine of just war? I think that his concept is much more "Christian" than the WT "neutrality."
