Amazing,
As we know it has always been the JW policy to discourage by various means military service on the part of its members. Admittedly the activities of the Dept of Justice under Attorney General Palmer at this time were more extreme than we would see today. I get the impression from what you write that WT attempts to interfere with conscription were perhaps cruder or less legally savvy than they are today or even during WWII. Do you feel that this was the case? Was this the reason for the indictment? Do you think that given the more sophisticated legal dept that the WT has today, this indictment would not have happened?

1975 Made Easy.
by Englishman inas i was one of those people who were around during the build-up to 1975, i thought that some of the newer converts might be interested to see how the society arrived at this date with such confidence.. firstly, we need to see how 1914 figures in this.
we need to appreciate, that although the date 1914 is arrived at retrospectively - that is it was assumed initially to be the date of armageddon, only later was it re-written as the date when satan was thrown out of heaven and jesus ascended to his throne.. the society tied this in with the scripture this generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur, assumed that a generation was the average life-span of 70 years, tacked it onto 1914 to arrive at 1984 but also mentioned that some would live to 80 years owing to special strength, then mentioned that this generation would by no means pass away so that quite a wide time slot was available for armageddon to arrive.
this window of time then provided endless opportunities for jws to be kept in a permanent state of anticipation as various events unfolded.

Looking back on the 1975 idiocy (I was a pioneer at the time) the one point that always makes me shake my head is the assumption that a creative day was 7000 years long. Without this assumption there would be no significance to 1975, yet there is no basis other than pure speculation for making this assumption!

Didn't this happen in 1843 or was it 1844, perhaps 1874 or maybe 1878 or even 1881. What about 1914 or 1918 or 1919 or 1925 or 1975 or within the lifetime of those who saw "with eyes of understanding" the beginning of The Great War (WWI). Or maybe even within the lifetime of the "millions now living (in 1919) who will never die?"
Maybe when the Imperial German, er, Communist Russian, er Islamic King of the North attacks whoever he is attacking these days and the UN magically makes all religion go away except for its favorite former NGO religion er printing company? Maybe when the faithful and discreet slave appointed in 1919 starts becoming faithful and discreet instead of being run by a bunch of shyster lawyers? -
