I remember that 1973 article on chess. Everyone started throwing out their chess sets. Then a few years later suddenly it was okay again.

Who of you ever lied on your field service reports?
by Julia Orwell ini've read a few people mention making up the figures for the field service reports, and i want to find out how common it is.
i never lied on my report.
sometimes i'd round up 15 minutes if i'd mentioned jw stuff to my brother that month, but that wasn't falsifying.

Toward the end I started putting one hour on my slip. I didn't want any elder coming after me about it. Although, I was so angry that I think I scared them all off anyway.

PO refuses to give me a "shepherding" visit ... wtf ???
by Calebs Airplane inso 2 weeks ago i received an email from the po... he wants to give my wife and i a shepherding call very soon... but get this... he mentioned that they had already made shepherding calls to the entire congo and we were the only ones left... i don't know whether i'm i supposed to feel loved or despised (by that completely irrelevant comment).
he's probably doing this to impress the co who is probably visiting soon.... my response to his email was basically: no problem... please feel free to stop by anytime... however, no need to come with a second person.
i would prefer a 1 on 1 meeting (not 2 on 1).

They want two of them there in case you confess to a disfellowshipping offense. If there is only one elder there you could recant your confession and they couldn't prove that you actually confessed. If two of them are there they have their required two witnesses.

You did well! Now, live your life on your terms.
"The tone was of love, so I did feel a bit emotional"
I'm sure Jim Jones' tone was loving until just before he handed out the Kool-Aid.

Holy moley, the hours I wasted sitting through those things.
I love that list! Brings back memories. I was in the drama "Beware of Rebellious Talk" in 1981. Guess what prompted them to write that one?
It's so interesting to see the change to 4-color programs and then back again.

Skippy - Your mustard story is hilarious!
I've told this story before on other threads. We had a CO in Massachusetts who was completely out of touch with reality. He used to brag that he'd never held down a full-time job (pioneer-bethel-CO). It became obvious when he started spewing his opinons.
He condemned anyone who failed to wash their dinner dishes before coming to the meeting.
He railed against the louts who didn't brush their teeth before a meeting.
I remember sitting there thinking, "I get home from work at 6:15 and it's a 7:00 meeting. Which one is it - wash the dishes or brush the teeth? Cause I can't do both and make it to the meeting."
This same CO swept through the circuit and imperiously insisted that the seating arrangement in every hall be rearranged - even the ones that had theater seats bolted to the floor. Then he instituted a policy that upon entering the hall for a meeting each publisher had to apply to an attendant who would escort them to a seat, filling up each row, starting with the front row - no seat left empty.
The elders all hated him - marathon elders' meetings, no excuses for failing to appear for field service on Wednesday evening (he'd even use the circuit assembly as an opportunity to shame any congregation that had less than 100% of the publishers out on the Wednesday evening of his visit), and he'd work only with children out in service.
He was a pompous ass, but the kids loved him.

It's sad that our mental conditioning as JWs makes it inconceivable that worldly people can be nice, honest, decent, and just all-around folks!
I remember that realization hitting me like a thunderbolt while I was on my way out.

What surprised me was that it was such a problem that they had to make a big announcement about it. I can see one or two of them being a little tipsy, but...

Stories of the bible
by jambon1 inseriously, do people really believe that these events actually happened?
or that they are in any way justified oir right?.
a guy and his small family gather up severy single living animal, bird, insect, puts them in a huge boat which saves mankind & all animal life.at the word of a prophet, a few bears tear apart half a dozen kids for calling a guy a baldy bastard.

I remember something that was written or in a talk about the Apocrypha. They said that you could tell those books were false because they read like fables or fantastic stories. One day it occurred to me that a lot of the OT reads the same way.
Jehu and his wet/dry fleece.
The guy who chopped up his dead concubine into 12 pieces and started a civil war.
Lot's wife.
Just about anything any of the judges did, Samson being a notable example.
Adam and Eve.
The list goes on. I quickly reminded myself that the bible is inspired of God (because it says it is) and I wiped those disloyal thoughts from my mind. Like a good JW.
