  As Homo sapiens we have been naturally selected as people who can cope with grinding hard work, lack of sleep, the ability to channel adrenaline into survival etc. If we then become rich and have lots of leisure time it can affect our happiness level because we are the survivors, the ones who struggled to be here, the ones who made it. As a species we're not biologically cut out for sitting around a pool all day.

  I think this is what Getty and other rich people mean, but then there's plenty to be done if you are awash with cash. Plenty of need in this world if they get bored by that pool.

  My daughter's already been to twelve funerals and she's only twenty-one. All close relatives, friends and some school friends. Be happy you have had your parents until they are seventy. My daughter was part of a threesome of little girls at primary school. All three have lost a parent now. Sorry I'm not being very sympathetic Gorby. Life's been tough for my kid losing her dad. Treasure your parents now, you will survive.

  many of us have heard similar sentences from believers regarding proof of creator, proof that their religion is the correct one, proof that their particular sect is the right one, proof that their individual sects interpretation of a certain religious text is the right one, proof that their own personal interpretation of a certain religious text is the right one; the list goes on.. in one of my previous posts, i shared the following thought of mine:.

  Oh that reminds me of a guy giving a public talk. I can see him now, very straight back, ex-army, little moustache. It must have been a wonder of creation talk because he kept going on about the wonderful spermatozoons. He pronounced it to rhyme with goons. All these little spermatozoons racing towards the egg, swimming furiously.

  Have You Found Your Place in the World?

  we were all told when we were in the watchtower that we should be grateful to be part of such a loving family.

  we were told that just beyond the superficial glamour of the world was a quagmire of despair, emptiness and pain waiting to suck us in.

  obviously, we took that part with a mountain of salt or we wouldn't be here today.

  RT that's an interesting description of karma. I've never thought of it as a concept of 'pass it on' but in a negative way. I do value people who try hard to refrain from taking out their pain on others and I try to follow this principle myself with mixed success. I have noticed perhaps in the last year how even the passing comments we make can affect others, not always negatively either, but I am starting to see how important we all are to the peace, or lack of it, each in our little bit of the world.

  Regarding your inability to take pleasure in life, I get this and I battled with it too. It's something to do with having such a goal driven upbringing where every form of pleasure was trivialised in favour of 'theocratic' service. A woman from the children of God cult I heard speak at a seminar said exactly the same thing. After leaving she said it was very difficult to find meaning in life because everything seemed trivial compared to the great and magnificent purpose she had in the cult. Don't know if that helps I just thought you might like to know. I really enjoyed your thoughts on karma.

  Anyone else here stopped looking to make friends or stop trying to find a group or community. -LifesNotOver

  Yes I agree I find having lots of aqaintances works better for me. I socialize with work colleagues, birthdays, Christmas etc. I've joined several Meetup groups and we do meals, cinema, live music, pub quizzes. Also a book club once a month which has got me reading stuff I don't normally choose and we have a good chat about books online and at the club meeting.

  There's no pressure to go to meetups or the book club. Nobody gets upset if you don't go. People to talk to when you feel like it.

  Rainbow_Troll have you tried Meetup.com? Lots of groups of all ages and interests.
