Can it be delayed until 1914?
by Doug Mason inunder the heading of "can it be delayed until 1914?
" in zion's watch tower of july 15, 1894, russell advised his readers that the trouble they were experiencing was taking place exactly as he had anticipated 17 years earlier.. russell's readers were concerned that, given the troubles they were experiencing, matters could not hold out until 1914.. he comforted them with the information that 1914 was not the date for the beginning of the time of trouble, but for its end.. the full text and a scan of that page from the watch tower is available at:.

Someone I know posted a copy of that article on their facebook page, but without any comment. This was the response from a JW:
"Wow, that's amazing! Where did you get that? I really liked what they said in the WT a couple of weeks ago about this: "For instance, in the year 1914, some thought that their being taken to heaven was imminent. When their hopes were not immediately realized, an earnest reexamination of the Scriptures brought into focus that a great preaching campaign lay ahead." How easy it would have been for them to get discouraged, sit around moaning, or even leave the truth, but instead they went back to the Bible and examined it to see what was going to happen next and then took up the preaching work. Really wonderful. I find it so hard to be like that if I'm disappointed about something! Good example!"

New Article on BEARDS and Attire of Jehovah's Witnesses
by jwfacts ini have had requests to add an article about beards and jehovah's witnesses.
it is interesting that there is virtually no statement that says a witness cannot have a beard, yet universally they do not have beards.
i have scoured quotes from all the threads on jwn, all references to beard on the cd watchtower library, and copies of elders letters that i have.

I was an MS in the UK and i wore a beard (still do). The elders said it was acceptable because it was well trimmed ( tho one elder did tell me another elder was anti-beards)
Incidentally I remember someone telling me that in illustrations throughout the 70s and 80s (and i think the Live Forever book might be a good example) evil people, those dying at Armageddon etc were often given a goatee.

MEXICO | Jehovah's Witness Family of 8 Massacred including three Children
by jwleaks ineight family members killed in mexico massacremexico | november 17, 2013. mexican police found sunday a family of eight, including three children, stabbed to death and tied down in their home in the northern city of ciudad juarez.. a two-year-old boy survived the attack and was handed to neighbors, local police said.. the chihuahua state prosecutor's office said the assailants apparently forced their way inside the house and killed two men, three women and three children between the ages of four and six.. their mouths were covered with duct tape and their hands and feet were tied.
neighbors said they heard gun shots but authorities said the victims had stab wounds.. neighbors said the house owner was a car salesman.. the family was supposed to attend a meeting of jehovah's witnesses when they were attacked inside their home on sunday morning, according to testimonies.. they were discovered dead after members of the congregation went to look for them.. ciudad juarez, which borders the us state of texas, was once the deadliest city in mexico amid a turf war between drug cartels.. more than 10,000 people have been killed in the city since 2006 but the murder rate began to decline in 2011.. local officials say the drop in violence is due to tougher policing and crime prevention programs, but security experts believe it began to wane after the sinaloa drug cartel defeated the rival juarez gang.. read latest breaking news from newsmax.com http://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/mexico-crime-murder/2013/11/17/id/537112#ixzz2kziajt8f.

It seems they missed the meeting because they had been murdered. It was not that they were murdered while missing a meeting. Let's not be too quick to find any excuse to bring a "heartless-JWs" negative into this tragedy. My heart goes out to them, their family and all their friends. And the congregation will no doubt be devastated.

When was the significance of the year 1919 first stated?
by jwfacts in.
when was it first introduced that the watchtower organisation was chosen in 1919?
i expect this was something first published under rutherford, as a way of making his leadership more important than that of russell, but would like some evidence to back that claim up.. .

Good question. Will check A People For His Name, later as that has quite a good account of how doctrine developed over the years. (I'm at work at the moment)

Some of it was a bit too daft and irrelevant to JWs (Jesus selling alcohol during the prohibition etc) but the bits that actually related to JWs were amusing. Liked the assembly hall joke.

Have you grown detached from caring about JW family and old friends?
by tootired2care inafter being out of the borg for a year and a half, weve dealt with a lot of nonsense from local elders stopping by unannounced, well-meaning do-gooders trying to encourage us.
somehow weve managed to get through this without getting dfd/dad.
for me the worst part of it all has been that much of my family has shunned me, and stopped talking to me, as soon as they heard through the grapevine that i wasnt going to meetings.

Good thread. I can totally relate.
I never thought I would be considering that it would be a relief losing contact with my family. For me family has always been everything. I had a long conversation with my Mum and my sister when I went home several weeks ago to do some odd jobs that needed doing at my mum's house - I told them I was no longer going to the meetings.
Since then I had one text from each of them. I decided to bite the bullet and call them this evening. My sister was not quite as chatty as usual and kept the conversation short before handing me over to my mum. My mum proceeded to talk at length, gushing about a gift a sister in her cong had given her which was a recording and notes of the AGM (my mum despite being a regular pioneer for many years and a regular auxilary - she can't now due to ill health - was the only one of the family except me not invited) and how her cong had been chosen to be hosts for the international assembly next year and what a wonderful privilege it was. It all sounded very much like she was making a point. Asked me a couple of quick questions about what I was up to. Without any follow up questions from her I realised I had nothing else to say to her so said I had better let her get on. They are both so involved in "the truth" that they are not really interested in conversation about anything else. With both of them, despite doing their best to be chatty I could sense pain in their voices. Does it really have to be so hard?
With my lifestyle as it is (a boyfriend who I dare not mention and socialising with "worldy" friends), there's not really much I can offer anymore. And I realised that it would be easier if they did just bite the bullet and shun me. I totally get what you mean when you say it's like trying to reason with the Taliban. Mine aren't quite that fanatical but they are totally consumed with JW life. They have nothing else. I hope they don't find out the real truth about the truth, for their own sake. It would destroy them. On the other hand I don't want to live with a constant feeling of disapproval in my life. Very sad.
