20 Years Occupying Afghanistan, Nothing Achieved
by Simon inso the occupation of afghanistan is coming to an end and, as predicted, they achieved absolutely nothing in that 20 years apart from:.
the death of 2,300+ service personnel and tens of thousands more seriously maimed or injured.. handing $billions or even $trillions of taxpayer dollars to defence contractors (so the military industrial complex wins, even if the military doesn't have a clear victory).. has this lengthy but short-term military occupation really changed anything in the country?
it doesn't appear so.. i said at the time that the us wouldn't have the staying power to enact real change.

Religion plays its part, certainly, but there is also much more involved. These people also saw off the armies of Alexander the Great, over 500 years before there was ever such a thing as Islam.

This event was foretold almost 140 years ago by the English poet, Rudyard Kipling - not because he had any psychic power, but just by using straight out simple arithmetic!
Even back in the year 1886, when Kipling penned the poem Arithmetic on the Frontier, it was fairly obvious that no occupying power could afford to remain in Afghanistan long enough to make much of a difference to things.
Its final stanza pretty much sums things up:
With home-bred hordes the hillsides teem,
The troopships bring us one by one,
At great expense of time and steam,
To slay Afridis where they run.
The "captives of our bow and spear"
Are cheap, alas! as we are dear.
(See the below link for the full rendition of Kipling's "Arithmetic on the Frontier" -plus some background notes).

No wonder that country has been described as "The Graveyard of Empires".

What you call “whataboutism” I would include under the old adage “Take extreme care when pointing your finger, as you do have three aimed back at yourself”.Being involved in a “cruel war” might explain certain atrocities, but it would be a very sad day indeed if we started excusing such actions under the excuse the it is part of a cruel war.It is all too easy to silo things into convenient packages eg. “He can’t be gay, because he plays football”, “he can’t be a bad-@$$, as he is a member of the Returned Serviceman’s League” etc - and likewise all to easy to dismiss anything we don’t want to hear as “Lies”.Also, I would love to know your definition of “Western conditions” is. It seems to me the primitive in all of us is never that far away, and that it does in fact take very little to strip away that veneer of “civilisation”. -

The Spanish Inquisition was actually aimed at stamping out heresy, and was not under papal control. It included the forced conversion of Jews and Muslims (including a very distant ancestor of mine).

Are You Enjoying living in Jesus Christ`s Paradise after 40 years of his reign ?
by smiddy3 init has been 40 years since 1975 when 6000 years of human creation took place according to wt theology, when jesus christ was supposedly to begin his 1000 year reign in which earth was supposed to be turned back to an eden like paradise.. 1975 was the second attempt of the wt to predict when 6000 years of human creation took place, the first time it was supposed to have occurred was in 1872 .. so by that reckoning we should be living 40 years into jesus christ`s 1000 reign .. on the other hand wt theology states that jesus returned in 1914 to do what ?
sit at his fathers right hand until 1975 ?.
of course this all hinges on jehovah`s witnesses / watchtower belief that a creative day was 7000 years long that they taught for decades .. do they still cling to this belief ?

46 years into Jesus’ millennial reign?
Going bloody well, just as long as he gets a handle on the COVID-19 pandemic. That wasn’t any part of the deal that I heard about!

Ethnic Europeans don’t do that?
Unfortunately, that is not correct.
During the Balkan wars of the early 1990s, similar atrocities were carried out under the euphemism of “Ethnic Cleansing”. The perpetrators were all “Ethic Europeans”, and more often than not Catholic or Orthodox by religion.
Also, at a place called My Lai in a country called Vietnam, a group of American soldiers performed similar acts of savagery during a morning of rape, burning, murder and mayhem on a March morning in the year 1968.

We do have freedom of religion in Australia - I attend the Rev Harley Davidson’s Church of the Righteous Hog, and nobody hassles me too much about that!

I saw things done to make children sit quietly at JW meetings which could only be described as atrocities.
No bones were broken, nobody died, but what was inflicted on those children (who were just being children) was outright inhumane. 40+ years later, I still cringe when I think about it.
