  i just discovered this translation into 'hawai'i pidgin' and for some reason found it very amusing.

  they even dubbed the caleb and sophia cartoons into this dialect.. not because i look down on pidgin speakers in any way, more about the way translations like this are revealing and telling in unintended ways..

  If English is your first language, the Papua New Guinea "Tok Pisin" language is not too difficult to pick up.

  For example, a roadside sign at one of PNG Power's hydroelectric power stations reads:

  LUKAUTIM GUT: ("Look-outim Good" i.e. Pay Attention)

  Draiv isi ("Drive easy" - used in this context, "easy" means to drive both slowly and carefully)

  Rot bilong man-wokabaut ("Rot" = Road, and "man-wokabaut" i.e. man-walkabout = pedestrian)

  What the last sentence is saying is that, within the plant, pedestrians have right of way.

  (It must be said, though, that Pidgin is not "baby-talk or similar; it is a language in its own right, and grammatical errors are quite possible - just like in any other language)

  as someone who never grew up in the shadow of the wt, i love reading accounts of people who began to wake up and think that the wt wasn't all that it represents itself to be*.

  and especially when they see that the things that they were told to avoid were harmless at worst, and quite often fun.

  christmas is a prime example.

  The cynic in me might say “The main role of Christmas is to give everyone an excuse for a booze-up.”

  However, the reality is in fact quite different. In my adopted family ( going on 22+ years now), it is more like an annual family reunion. Always held on Boxing Day, there are 50 -60 people in attendance - with the number growing yearly as more of the younger set get married and have families of their own.

  history is full of examples of governments disarming their citizens , only to be brutally betrayed.

  what follows is a litany of blood that happened after disarming citizens.

  1911: turkey; citizens disarmed – 1.5 million armenians were slaughtered.

  Yeah, well, get a group of firearms buffs together, and we could easily go on all day about the benefits / shortfalls of the various types of guns, rifle calibres, cartridge loads, bullet types and similar such matters. (Particularly if alcohol is also being consumed during the course of these discussions!).

  One thing that does need to be said, however, is that even the humble shotgun should never be treated as a joke. For example, these have been used to effect in warfare, with one such case being during the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960)

  They must have done something right during that twelve-year long struggle, as it is one of the very few Communist Insurgencies which was defeated by the Western powers. (In this case, Britain and its Commonwealth).

  PS: I don't now intend to enter into any sort of debate about the merits of this or that type of firearm (whether or not alcohol is being consumed!).

  I live at the same latitude as Jerusalem in Texas and sheep are outside year around,

  That in itself means nothing at all. For example, the place where I grew up is on the same latitude as the south of France - however, its climate is not at all Mediterranean. (At times, more like sub-polar!)

  There are, in fact, six other factors aside from latitude which determine the climate of a locality:

  - Its altitude, aspect, distance from the sea, relief, plus direction of prevailing winds and the presence (or not) of ocean currents are each at least as important as its latitude.

  None of this as exactly rocket science, either - more like what high school students learn during Grade 10 Geography.

  i was once was told by an jw elder it was a rule not to gossip or swear as it could harm someone, but i guess the new light allows this.

  it was bad enough when they were calling people worldly now i heard a jw gossiping about someone and it was mean.just another reason i would never go back.

  extreme hair styles can easily lead one into a trap of the devil also, and cause others to stumble.

  for example, a young man in the united states was making fine progress in his study of the bible, and he was moved to share with an experienced witness in preaching to others about the good things he was learning from the bible.

  from early youth he had let his beard grow, and since some in the business community wore beards, he felt that his wearing one in preaching to others would be acceptable generally.

  Back in the day, we all heard that story. Whether it actually happened, of course, is another matter entirely.

  If W. Schnell is to be believed (as he claims in 30 Years a Watchtower Slave) this thing they had about beards was all just a power trip. Many had taken to imitating CT Russell by wearing a “goatee” type beard. After Russell’s death Boozerford Rutherford forbade beards, just to remind the rank-and-file that he was now running the show.
