Thanks Seigswife for looking this up for me but i've got absolutely no idea what this is supposed to mean. Is this a list of possible translations for this or what?

OK, this post isn't out to prove anything, other than I've got too much time on my hands, which alot of you know that already.
Over my morning coffee this morning I decided to read the section of the bible dealing with Nimrod and the tower of Babel. I have two bibles at home the NWT and the New American Standard.
Heres what th NWT says at Gen 10:9
"He displayed himself a mighty hunter in opposition to Jehovah, that is why there is a saying 'just like nimrod a mighty hunter in opposition to Jehovah'"New American Standard:
"He was a mighty hunter before the Lord, therefore it is said: 'Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the Lord'"OK, only a one word difference, but that one word changes totally the meaning of the passage about Nimrod. Since I'm not a linguist and don't have access to the original scriptures I figured I check the other translations to see wich one is closest to the true meaning. Her's what I found:
Douay:
And he was a stout hunter before the Lord. Hence came a proverb: Even as Nemrod the stout hunter before the Lord.Geneva:
He was a mighty hunter before the Lord wherefore it is said, As Nimrod y mighty hunter before the Lord.Jerusalem:
...hence the saying 'like Nimrod, a mighty hunter in the eyes of Yahweh.'New International version:
...that is why it is said' like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the Lord.King James:
...wherefore it is said, even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the Lord.As I said this proves nothing other than i've got too much time on my hands. However all the other bibles seem to be in agreement and only the NWT places Nimrod in opposition to Jehovah. Can anyone explain this to me.

Uhh? Which God's that?
by ozziepost inon the back cover of the april 8 issue of awake!
is a little story about two teenagers 'caught' praying at macdonalds.
apparently the two teenagers felt the need to explain to an onlooker that they were praying to a 'different' god, or in the words of the article "not just any god".. i'm curious, which god was this?

The BIBLE is TOO CompleX to understand
by plmkrzy inhonest this started out as just a question, really.
i have a question .
it may seem a bit irrelevant.

sorry Puzzled,
Just because I don't have faith doesn't mean I can't understand the Bible, it just means I can't understand it the way you do. I understand it to be a book riddled with inconsistencies, contradictions and historical misrepresentations.
As far as the bible being consistant, thats laughable. Unless of course you mean consistantly inconsistant, consistantly contradictory and consistantly historically erroneous. However it is still consistantly read, wich means a constant source of cash for those with the pockets.

Patio134,
Couldn't agree with you more on this one. The bible isn't really all that complex it is full of contadiction and error. That is why people say you need faith to understand it. Faith gives people the blinders to overlook it glaring errors.

Any other churches call themselves the 'truth'??
by Beck_Melbourne inold habits die hard...and quite often in my comments i will refer to the borg as the 'truth'.
does anyone know of any other churches that refer to their own particular church or religion as the 'truth'??
also, does anyone know how it originated...all my life i have used the term...comments like 'how long have u been in the truth?

Good points Adonai,
All religions believe they have the truth, otherwise they'd have no followers. They may use different catch-phrases to label their brand
of the truth.
I think that Will Power has also made some good points, as far as I know the Jehovahs witnesses are the only cristian organization that chastises people for seeking answers to the truth outside of their proscribed literature.
And Yardif, how can questions from the heart have the intent to disturb the peace of the congregation?

'The Truth" about the Golden Rule
by Sargon ineven though i ceased believing in the christian god many years ago, i've always thought that the golden rule contained in the sermon on the mount, was the perfect philosophy.
you know, do unto others.... i was quite surprised when i discovered that these words were not original to jesus and were in fact already contained in the talmud.. rabbi hillel, who died somewhere between 10 & 25 ce had written "do not unto others what you would not have others do unto you" sab 31a.
still good words to live by, but not original to jesus as the bible would have you believe.

Thanks Scully and Sixof Nine,
I didn't realize there were so many other versions of the Golden Rule. Thanks for enlightening me.

Aryan,
I'd say that your views were laughable, if I didn't realize you were serious. As to Hitler gassing the Jews, no he personally didn't but his henchmen did. If you don't beleive Hollywood or the Jews on this, just read the words of a fellow Aryan. Rudolf Hoess retells the gassing of the Jews in his autobiography, 'The commandant of Auschwitz"
