When I got my first job at McD's I realized how much blood is contained in just a quarter pounder, let alone a steak. If JWs are really serious about abstaining from blood, they should either do their own kosher butchering or become vegetarians.

Animals, Blood, Food, and JW Beliefs
by dubstepped ini'm just thinking aloud here.
i watched a show yesterday and they were talking about how the largest mammals of the sea (whales) fed on such small creatures (plankton) rather than eating some other large creatures.
anyway, it got me thinking about how as jws we thought that in paradise animals would all be herbivores, that they would no longer eat other animals.

Money and Happiness
by berrygerry inwt has made a number of references to this alleged quote by j. paul getty:.
“money doesn’t necessarily have any connection with happiness.
nothing in my wt life brought more stress and anxiety than not having enough money.. this quote makes far more sense:.

I can personally attest to the fact that having a sufficient amount of money to pay for the necessities of life can be the difference between happiness and misery. Unless the WT meant the difference between being a millionaire versus a billionaire, they are totally full of shit.

Why are the evolutionist's so upset?
by Esse quam videri inso many evolutionist's on this forum are upset at the terror attacks in europe such as recently in sweden.
it is just a logical step in the evolution of the human race.
should you not rather be celebrating the great changes taking place right before your eyes and constructing detailed explanations of the cell structure and dna development in the human brain.. you can't eat your cake and still have it.

I am not interested in Darwinian Evolution, or Social Darwinism, only EVOLUTION.
EVOLUTION is just a word; nothing more. If this confuses you then I suggest looking it up in a dictionary. Biological evolution is a scientific theory, social evolution is not. Do societies evolve? Well, they do change and some are definitely more successful than others, but I would hesitate to equate this process with darwinian evolution. For one thing, changes in society are not always random and, practically speaking, they aren't really adapting to their environment in most cases, but reacting to INTERNAL pressures. In any case I would like to repeat that this would not be a science in the same sense that biological evolution is. It's all speculation at this point.
Stop calling it a theory please. It's a fact.
You obviously aren't familiar with scientific terminology. In science a theory is a hypothesis that is well supported by evidence. Biological evolution is a theory; so is gravity. In science the only facts are empirical data, all explanations of that data remain theories no matter how well established they might be. The reason for this terminology is because science is always open to change. If scientists found enough data to refute the theory of biological evolution (unlikely, I know, but I'm being hypothetical here) then they would renounce it and try to come up with a new theory.
However, back to evolution. World War 1 for example. We may talk about the immediate cause but it says nothing for how this behavior developed in evolutionary time. We may come up with explanations about what brought on WW 1 but to understand why war exists we must look to evolution for an explanation. These two explanations are not competing with each other. They must support each other and both must be understood to properly comprehend the event. How does evolution dictate the everyday decisions of humankind?
Google evolutionary psychology. Also, I think Islamic extremism would be better explained in terms of memetics. the 'meme' is a word coined by Richard Dawkins and is supposed to be the mental equivalent of a gene. Just as selfish genes compete with one another for dominance, thus driving the process of biological evolution, memes are ideas which compete with one another in the minds of human beings. Islam could be considered a meme, as could any religion or ideology. Successful memes encourage their hosts (human brains) to reproduce them either through writing, word-of-mouth or conquest. Since Islam contains the imperative to convert the entire world using any means necessary, it might possibly be the most successful meme ever conceived.
As for your contention that evolutionists cannot "have their cake and eat it too"? You are being silly. I can fully recognize that evolution best explains the variety of life on this planet and possibly human behavior as well, without having to condone every instance of it. Just because it is true that spiders evolved, it does not follow that I should love spiders. Even if evolutionary psychology could explain antisocial behaviors like rape, genocide and terrorism, I am not obliged to condone these actions any more than a Christian would condone Satan's actions because he was created by God. I don't understand how you could make such an illogical leap.

Rebel8: -I was born with a bleeding disorder and thus referred to as a demonic vampire
Interesting. Tell me more. Did they actually try to use crosses and garlic against you? My mom thought I was a vampire for awhile. I have no idea why, since I was already a vegetarian by then and drinking blood would definitely qualify as unkosher.

So many evolutionist's on this forum are upset at the terror attacks in Europe such as recently in Sweden. It is just a logical step in the evolution of the human race.
You are confusing Darwinian Evolution with Social Darwinism. Darwinian Evolution by natural selection is a theory that attempts to explain the origin of different species of organisms; it's scientific. Social Darwinism is not science, it is a rather poorly conceived political/ethical theory that those in power use to justify their exploitation of those who are weaker and poorer than them. Darwin himself never said that evolution favors the strong or the violent and he would be appalled that his name has been attached to such an idiotic philosphy.
Why are you differentiating social evolution from organic evolution. Why is evolution not just evolution?
Because the theory of evolution was never meant to explain society. There is no 'social evolution'. Social Darwinists claim that evolution favors the strong over the weak, the smart over the stupid, the quick over the slow. Oh really? Is a mouse strong? Are clams smart? Is a sloth quick? Evolution favors anyone who lives long enough to pass their genes on to the next generation, using whatever means are at there disposal. Unless these Jihadi suicide bombers have kids and have left behind a fat life insurance policy that covers suicide bombers, then they are evolutionary failures! Blowing yourself up is not a sound survival strategy; it's right up there with celibacy in the list of evolutionarily maladaptive behavior.

Spoletta, you make a valid point. Not every Muslim is sleeper who could be radicalized at any moment; I'm confident that most Muslims wouldn't want to live under Shari'ah law any more than you or I. The problem is that it wouldn't be necessary for the majority of Muslims to be radical for the goals of the radicals to be achieved. Most Muslims are good people, but Islam itself, as it exists to day, is a profoundly dangerous idealogy that is opposed to virtually every value that you would care to associate with the Western Enlightenment. I encourage you to read the Hadith and Sunnah if you have any doubts over the legitimacy of radical Muslim idealogy. ISIS, as abhorrant as they are, are actually 'better' Muslims than the moderates which you are defending insomuch as they truly observe the Shari'ah to the letter.
To all those who might be thinking of burning Qur'ans or mistreating Muslims in any way: please don't. You would be playing right into the radical's hands if you did. Radical Islam encourages Islamophobia precisely because alienated mainstream Muslims are easier to radicalize than those who feel at home in secular countries.
Don't hate the Muslims. Don't call them names. Instead, try to seduce them away from their beliefs. Tempt them with beer, pepperoni pizza and kinky sex. People turn to religion out of hopelessness and despair. They place their hopes in the afterlife when this life sucks. Show a Muslim that their paradise of wine, women and boys is right here on earth; there's no need to suck up to Allah.

The fact that even countries like Sweden are being attacked refutes the oft repeated fallacy that Islamic terrorism is just a reaction to foreign policy. To my knowledge, Sweden has never been a party in any wars against Islamic countries. 9/11 may have been politically motivated, but this is just Islamic fanaticism pure and simple.

Verbatim Court Transcript Maria Russell vs Charles Taze Russell

Interesting transcript. Russell always struck me as a weird religious nut who pored over his Bible obsessively looking for numerological clues to the end times. Chick repellant. I would have never guessed he had the time or the inclination to womanize. To me, it was Rutherford who fit the philanderer profile to a T.
But then I've always been a terrible judge of character...

Have You Found Your Place in the World?
by Rainbow_Troll inwe were all told when we were in the watchtower that we should be grateful to be part of such a loving family.
we were told that just beyond the superficial glamour of the world was a quagmire of despair, emptiness and pain waiting to suck us in.
obviously, we took that part with a mountain of salt or we wouldn't be here today.

I've lived in four states and visited many places. Though I admit most of those places have been poor, since I couldn't afford to live in a rich or middle class area. Right now I live in a trailer park along with other very poor white people (I guess we would be 'white trash' in the eyes of those who are better off). I literally can't afford to live anywhere else at this point and the jobs around here don't pay enough to offer me any hope of upgrading my living conditions. Frankly, as much as I would love to have my own apartment, I'm actually very grateful to have a place at all. I've been homeless more than once.
I'm not aware of any humanist, philosophical or book clubs in my area but there are plenty of internet forums available for those types of discussions (that's why I'm here).
There is a small community college here but when I say small, I mean that it's only a single room. They don't teach any subject that you could get a BA in. I don't think it should be allowed to call itself a college. Colleges should be places of education that offer degrees and are staffed by credentialed teachers. If you want to teach senior citizens how to use Windows 7, don't call it a college course, call it a computer education class.
My experiences in the public school system have really turned me off of formal education anyways. I much prefer just opening up a textbook and studying it on my own. If I need help there are lots of internet forums staffed by experts in every field who are willing to help students at no charge; as well as YouTube channels for all the major universities. I think my only real chance of getting a university education at this point is going overseas where higher education is free even to foreigners. That's something I'm currently working on but I still have to find some way of supporting myself while I earn my degree.
