Apparently there is a cream cheese substitute - based either from rice or tofu. Have fun experimenting!

can someone tell the wts/jw's how utterly counter productive & cruel shunning is?.
apart from serious crimes where a person might conscientiously have nothing to do with a friend/relative, people who are struggling with any kind of issues generally need love, support & kindness.. shunning is unnecessary, evil & humiliating.. does the punishment really fit the crime?
someone caves into the 'sins of the flesh' so they are cut off from all human contact with everyone they know?.

My understanding is that they 'teach' - don't go it alone. They have a buddy system.
While going through this process they have constant support. They are treated well. They have regular meetings to talk about loneliness, self worth and encouragement!
I agree with you there. The WTS has ingeniously (as it worked for many decades until the advent of the Internet) created a situation where JWs are advised to avoid as much as possible associating with outsiders and unbelievers, which worked in their favor in deterring many JWs from doing something that could get them DFd as they would have 'no where else to go' due to a lack of social network outside the JWs, and the rules on shunning meant that exJWs and DFd people were viewed as some kind of bogeyman that made you afraid to seek them out.
That's why when people come to JWN wanting to "fade" from the JWs, one of the first recommendations that anyone here will offer is to start developing outside activities and social contacts so the feelings of isolation that arise from eventually being shunned by JWs will be diminished.

I wonder if you could use the silken tofu to create an alternative to the cream cheese frosting? Hard to get that lovely creamy cheesy flavour from tofu, though!!!
watersprout, I'll contact my colleague and see if she'll email me the recipe. There was a cream cheese frosting for it too, but that can easily be omitted.
I don't know if I could substitute eggs with banana... I'm not a banana-fan and oddly enough, they don't like me much either!
Sorry shamus, the milk, butter and egg content in the recipe would disqualify it as a vegan recipe. I don't know how you'd substitute for those ingredients (except maybe some canola oil in place of the butter), but if you find a way, I'd love to make it for one of my relatives who is vegan.
One of my workmates also had a recipe for a quinoa carrot cake that everyone raved about.... but again, it has milk and eggs in it.
I make a really nice quinoa salad. It's super easy and there really isn't a recipe - just chop up a bit of onion, celery, tomatoes, cucumber (other veg if you like), and fresh herbs (parsley, chives, etc.), add to some cooked and cooled quinoa, add some chickpeas (or mixed beans), a bit of lemon juice, and canola oil, salt and pepper to taste. Toss it all together, let it chill in the fridge before serving.

Usually rehab programs (like AA or drug rehab) will recommend to the individual who wants to quit using to avoid people and situations that will tempt them to use again. However, in that case, it's the individual making the choice to shun (at their discretion) his or her former lifestyle and associates in favor of healthier choices. I seriously doubt that a drug dealer or a bartender would say to a customer they hadn't seen in a long time "Hey, you aren't welcome here! Get out and don't ever come back, unless you plan on being a junkie/drunk again! I won't speak to you ever again unless you do!"
Sometimes I remind myself that I chose to leave an unhealthy dangerous belief system and if the JWs weren't so hateful in their shunning practices, and actually invited me to associate with them, called on me to see how I was doing, etc. I could - if I were at some depressed or lonely point in my life - be completely vulnerable to being lured back. Their shunning - even from family members - is doing me a huge favour. It reminds me, over and over again, of the reasons why I will NEVER EVER go back to the JWs.

Anne Murray's Snowbird was first recorded in 1969.
Elvis' cover of Snowbird was released in January 1971.
am i right in thinking that the music of meatloaf is off limits to jw's?
i seem to remember some tut tutting and strong concil about bat out of hell?.
Yes, a friend of mine knew I wasn't allowed to have it, so she made a special album cover for it (like those fabric/quilted photo album covers) and gave it to me for my 16th birthday.
It sucked, because I could only listen to it playing very quietly or when my parents weren't home. When it was discovered on one of my mom's recon missions in my room, they made me return it, and after that my friend never spoke to me again.
this has probably been addressed, but i'm in a rush and wanted to get this out asap while it's fresh and before i have to run off again.
and i don't have the km with me to note the exact instructions and passages discussed, anyway.... last week in the service meeting, there was an unusual part that i wish i would have been prepared for.
the only material was to read a couple passages from luke and discuss how they affect our attitude toward our ministry.

Imagine a witness from the 1950s or 1960s running into a witness today. I think the 1950s/60s witness would be totally shocked and disgusted.
I don't think you have to go back even that far. Going through grade school and high school in the 70s, being a JW was like having a penis drawn on your forehead with a Sharpie™. You were the subject of ridicule, bullying and other forms of harassment - and the teachers and principals were in on it too. You got sent to the office for Taking a Stand for The Truth™ every other day.
JW kids today have it made, and they are just coasting along on the tears and embarrassment that my generation of JWs and prior generations of JWs experienced. They are pansies compared to how it used to be.
my friends,.
i need your counsel on a personal matter, and i hope you will give it in love.
as some of you know, i was disfellowshipped six years ago, but it wasn't until june 2010 that i made up my mind never to return to the wts.
I tried something similar about a year ago. I'd heard from this friend's brother that she was no longer Active™ as a JW - hardly ever went to meetings, did some things that JWs would frown upon, etc.
So I sent her an email hoping only to catch up. I shared some details of my life. She responded with no details, just wanted to know if I was an Active™ JW. I was honest with her and told her I wasn't. The next thing I heard from her was that she did not want to communicate with me b/c I was following Satan.
Then a couple of days later, I realized that she had found me on FB and used my friends list to re-connect with classmates who were never JW (the ones who were always "following Satan". I was infuriated that she used me the way she did, and just blocked her.
I truly hope your experience is different, Quendi. But know that you can share with us regardless of the outcome.
