I haven't been invited in over a decade, not even by my JW relatives. I find that odd, because you'd think if they were so convinced that they had The Truth™, they'd be bending over backward to make sure I at least knew the date. On the other hand, maybe they just think I'm a lost cause. Either way, by not inviting me, aren't they Bloodguilty™ because they didn't even try?

I sleep with a fan going at my bedside.
I also take a medication that has worked wonders for me, and because my estrogen levels are in my boots, I'm on hormone replacement. I'm trying to eat more healthfully (lowering simple carb consumption like breads and sweets), trying to lose some weight, get some regular exercise and sleep at night. I've cut way back on my caffeine consumption - it's a stimulant and seems to trigger the hot flashes.
I got rid of some of the job related stress in my life and it's made a world of difference.
Even now that the flashes are well controlled, I'll get them if I start feeling stressed, so I'm trying to learn how to cope better with the triggers.

Watched 3 season of game of thrones - I want those 25+ hours of my life back
by will-be-apostate inthis is the worst series i've ever watched in my life.
whenever things are starting to get smooth and good characters seem to gain advantage, the writers just kill them.
i've wasted 25+ hours of my life watching how the writers make the bad win over the good.. they make you continue watching by planting the seed in your head that "just a few more episodes and everything is gonna be all right", but no, painful death comes upon anyone who is not cruel and perfidious enaugh.

Rickon is the younger brother of Brandon Stark.
To the OP: If you think watching 3 seasons was a waste of time, I won't even bother recommending a read of the book series. The author routinely kills off terrific characters - that is just 'life' in Westeros. I just finished the 5th book in the series (waiting for the next one to come out) via audiobook. It was more than 35 hours long.

Anyone got a nice, simple recipe for Moussaka???
by quellycatface ini love this dish so much but have never made it.. goodness, i am so obsessed with food..

Moussaka , from All Recipes (dot com)
I've made this one before, it's quite good. My Greek friends use ground lamb instead of beef and season with a touch of cinnamon as well.
The secret to taking Moussaka from "just okay" to "amazing" is in the Bechamel sauce. If the milk gets burnt even a little, you have to scrap it and start over.

When a JW relative came to visit . . . .
by skeeter1 infor those of you who are shunned, it is in disguise a blessing.
becuase when you are not shunned, jws come to visit.
it is the most tiresome hosting you will ever endure.. for the first 2 1/2 days, it was straight talk about "jehovah", the "organization", the "bible", then, "how bad these times are", "can't wait to see someone dead in the new world" .

One more thing, as irritating as it must have been to listen to JW claptrap for the better part of 4 days, consider this: many JWs are so sheltered and uneducated and poorly informed about the goings on in the world, that they seriously do not have anything else to talk about.
Perhaps they deserve some pity. Not much, but some.

I agree with jamiebowers - if they don't like how Materialistic™ you are, they may prefer the accommodations at the Super 8 motel instead. That would shut them up, and fast. Because despite how Materialistic™ you are, and how much they enjoy the fruit of your labour (even though they must protest about it), the fact is they are too cheap to loosen the purse strings on their buttholes and pay for accommodations anywhere else. In fact, they'd rather mooch off you and complain about how you're living the high life, than put their money where their mouth is and vacation in a fleabag motel that they can't really afford.
Oh and while I'm on the topic, when they complain about how Materialistic™ you are, you can always counter with something like "Yeah, that's what happens when you get an education. It sucks, but we seem to be handling it well." /sarcasm

Ask them what they mean.
Do they mean, for example, that people are still dying of diseases that couldn't be cured several decades ago? That's blatantly false - we have vaccines for more illnesses today than ever before, preventing deaths the world over. We have medications that can stop the progression of leprosy (Hansen's Disease) - a disease that would have caused a person in Bible times to have been ejected from their home and community and forced to live out their days destitute and disfigured.
Do they mean that there is more poverty in the world?
Do they mean that there is more unemployment?
Do they mean the world is more violent?
Each of these arguments has been proven to be false - the fact of the matter is that past centuries have been more bloody, far more violent, far more superstitious, far more impoverished, etc. New methods of warfare, for example, have made us cognizant of the potential for mass destruction, and far more engaged in peace making efforts.
The ability to save the lives of infants born prematurely, babies whose survival was unheard of just a few decades ago, has spared many families the pain and grief of losing an infant that our grandparents may have endured more than once.
The ability to control our reproductive capabilities in the last 50 years has allowed women to contribute to their families' livelihood - we are one of the most affluent societies to have ever existed. Couples can actually *plan* how many children they have, educate them, give them a standard of living that was unheard of a couple of generations ago. Women are no longer simply wives and mothers - they are appreciated for their intellect and their contributions in society.
Oh, and slavery was abolished like 150 years ago.

Is anyone keeping up with the latest episodes of Grimm?
Friday's episode, where Monroe's parents confronted him about his marrying outside of his "kind" gave me some JW flashbacks - especially when they decide they will not, under any circumstances, be part of Monroe's and Rosalie's life together, and Monroe wishes them well, but says he has decided to live his life on his own terms, Blutbad traditions and beliefs be damned.
"I don't even know who you are anymore."
"I don't know what you're doing, but it's wrong!"
Monroe's dad Bart to mom Alice, after holding their ground (Keeping Integrity™??) with the 'old ways': "We did the right thing."
I kind of felt like I'd just re-watched that horrible Prodigal Son video....

I want my donations back!
by Hortenzie ini want to ask wt for my donations back.
i live in canada and i have income tax receipts from them so i can prove how much i gave them.... anybody ever tried something like that or heard about somebody doing it?
what approach should i take?.
-
Scully
Hortenzie,
When you make a voluntary donation, without stipulating what the money is to be used for, the people receiving the money can do with it as they wish.
Nobody held a gun to your head and forced you to make a donation to the WTS. Yes, you were manipulated by them, and believed you were donating to a good cause, but any lawyer worth their salt will tell you that it is your responsibility to do due diligence before handing your money over to people you don't really know. There are scam artists everywhere and no matter what they promise you, it is your money until you decide to part with it. Even stores are not required to refund your money when you make a purchase - they will make an exchange or credit or refund as part of good customer relations, but they are not required to refund your money once you have taken delivery of their product.
