Should I even bother telling someone what I think of their parenting . . . .any advice?
by skeeter1 inthe situation: a neighbor's child and mine have played together for 8 years.
her mother is a single parent, and a probable narcissist.
loves designer clothes, bentleys, money, will not date a regular joe or even a rich man who doesn't drive the right car, wear the right clothes, etc.

Even modelling that behaviour - the mom getting drunk routinely, dangerous driving, having 'virgin' versions of cocktails so she develops a taste for them before being 'legal' - this is certainly irresponsible of the mom. Kids need healthy boundaries, and she is being taught that boundaries are for other people, boundaries don't apply to her. -

@ ADCMS
I believe the GB's opinion is every JW is mentally diseased... except the grand 7 who sit in their ivory tower. It's not limited only to those who've left.
Of course they don't want to state that outright. Some people might get offended and leave / stop putting money in the Contribution Boxes™. And then there's the possibility that the recent "do as we say, even if it makes no sense" directive is tied in with this belief/hope that Active™ JWs will be ready to make The Great Tribulation™/ Armageddon™ happen by instructing JWs to start smiting Apostates™ or anyone who refuses to listen to their Good News™.

Pagan Origins
by tinker ina currently active jdub acquaintance occasionally stops by to say hello and we share a wee dram or two.
after the general small talk of new cars, exotic vacations and sports we often get into the "why" we are xjubs.

@ bittersweet2K
Do you suggest we all go back to school and learn some ancient calendar for no reason?
If I remember correctly, there was a failed attempt by CT Russell (I think) to invent a new calendar just for the Bible Students. To say that it would be an arduous task and a simply ridiculous measure to maintain Separateness From The World™ is an understatement.

It's fun to point out to JWs that Judas Iscariot's betrayal of Jesus was vital to the completion of God's Purpose™. Why, then, is he so reviled? -

If the 13 year old is being endangered (being encouraged to party, drink alcohol and be driven over the speed limit without a seatbelt all qualify, as would having all this behaviour modeled for her to emulate), you could place an anonymous report with Child Protective Services.
Then it's out of your hands, and the proper authorities would investigate and ensure the child's best interests are looked after.

Poster country flags and privacy
by Simon inthe new forum originally had a little country flag next to each post showing the country that the post was made from based on the geoip encoding (the country the ip address is from).
before i switched over to the new site someone made an issue about it violating their privacy and i didn't want to complicate and confuse the switchover with policy debate at the same time as technical issues so removed the flags even though i disagreed.. someone has already requested it as a feature and i think it should be added back so i thought it's now time to open the discussion and get everyone's opinions.
first, the reason i think it should be shown:.

I opted out of showing the flag on my profile in previous forum formats. I also opted out of showing my gender, although I've freely disclosed information that makes both my gender and country of residence clear.
I prefer to opt out of disclosing that information on my profile. If someone wants to attempt to identify me, they can bloody well work for it, by reading through all of my 13,000+ posts, rather than having it automatically served to them on my profile.

January 1, 2015 marks 20 years since we left the JWs. Still have so much gratitude for that decision.
This year I've given myself the gift of being kind to myself. For my entire life I've been my own worst critic. This year I hope that I'll be able to take notice of the positive, trying to drown out the negative self-talk that has dominated life until now.

Did you ever hear yourself as a JW say something and think, did that just come out of my mouth?
by Wasanelder Once ini was driving with a long time non-witness friend when a song by supertramp came on the radio and i changed it.
she asked "why did you do that?
i like that song.

Cold Steel:
did that "brother" ever get baptized?
Actually, the Brother™ was the one Conducting™ the Study™ with my parents. I was new to the jargon and thought I would impress him with how I had been paying attention.
