Even though I'm not DFd or DAd, I have been treated by JWs as though I am. The way I find to be the most effective in dealing with it has been like this:
You see Brother or Sister StuckUp in a very public place, people milling all about. Without hesitation, walk up to her and give her a BIG HUG!! Say "Oh it's so NICE to see you!! It's been such a long time."
Of course, they are going to bristle and stiffen up in response to your affectionate greeting. You back away, slightly bewildered.... then a knowing, surprised look comes over your face as you say: "I had no idea you'd been disfellowshipped. I never would have imagined!! YOU!!??!! I'm so sorry!!!" Then turn on your heel and walk away.
Reverse psychology works amazingly well!

for me, the word was "loving".. great "loving" kindness.. great undeserved "loving" kindness!.
disfellowshipping is a "loving" provision.. when the wtbts want their accolytes to swallow another bitter pill, another restriction, another rebuke, another demand on time, the buzz word is "loving".. the "loving" word, is, to the average jw, the same as the mccabe nod is to the salesman.
the mccabe nod is used by salesman all the time to get the prospective customer to agree to something that he doesn't care for too much.

at this past week's service meeting, our congregation reviewed the part "keep seeking the kingdom first" in the january km.. the elder handling the part decided to include the admonition not to work overtime and risk missing a meeting, even if you need the money.
one drone in the audience even stated that working ot when we need it could lead us into becoming more and more materialistic.
well, when it comes time to take friday off to attend the district convention, i wonder if these same jws who refuse to work ot will get a favorable response from their employer when they request that friday off.
I totally agree that statements like these are a reflection of the WTS competing for your time and resources. The numbers are just rolling in from the UN scandal that broke in October 2001, and I bet they're getting antsy about statistics.
I guess the elders assume that if you are getting paid a salary, any overtime you put in is going to be returned to you as an extra vacation day. In some jobs, like mine, it isn't. If I work two extra weekend shifts, it's the equivalent in pay to what a whole two week pay cheque would be.
Before we quit going to meetings all together, I used to think of how I would handle this kind of objection to overtime from elders. These were a few of my favorites:

I'm taking care of my retirement planning this way. Oh that's right, you never did that, did you?
My kids need a good education and this is helping to finance it.

just curious about something.
i am currently homeschooling my daughter, and she is learning to write in cursive.
and it got me to wondering, does anybody even use cursive writing anymore other than to sign their name?
I believe the reason that cursive writing is still taught is that it is beneficial in the development of a child's hand-eye-coordination. There have also been some interesting studies that suggest that curved forms that predominate cursive writing develop a different spot in the brain from printing block letters. Apparently it's a kind of right-brain vs. left-brain phenomenon.
That's also the reason that kids learn to print before they learn cursive writing; because if you do it the other way around, it's more difficult to learn printing block letters.
It's also an indicator as to what learning style works best for people as they grow older.
I very seldom print anything. I prefer cursive writing, as I find it's faster than printing, and I can keep up with my thoughts better. Typing is faster still, but I don't have the luxury of being allowed to chart about my patients with a keyboard.
I loved learning penmanship. I also enjoy doing calligraphy and lettering. Maybe it's the artistic side of me that's showing after having been squashed for so long by the WTS....
