Not to worry, I don't think any of us who have sent e-mail to Calgary have received a reply.
I know I haven't.
I'm not sure if Hawk is back to work with the Public Service strike still an on-going issue at this time.
Just try to remember where this fellow is at mentally, emotionally, religiously. He may still think of all of us as the "Evil Slave Class," and might find us too scary to talk to just yet.
Try to be patient, ok??

JW preoccupation with sugar/candy

Lots of little old sisters we knew seemed to always have handfuls of candies in their bags for the children. Must have been the only way to get any after-meeting association.
You know what fishermen say: When you have the right bait, you can catch all kinds of fish....
Speaking of another kind of "candy" there was this lovely British couple, newly immigrated to Canada, who was studying with one of the elders in our KH. They'd just had a new baby too, and were very eager to attend all the meetings, and would sit right up in the front row.
Well, nobody had the heart to "stumble" this new study, soon-to-be sister. She would sit in the front row, two little tots in tow and new baby in her arms, and whenever the baby would squawk, she'd lift up her blouse and let the baby start breast-feeding right then and there. You could always tell when she was doing it too. The brother on the platform would usually pause mid-sentence, his eyes would open WIDE and then he would deliberately stare AWAY from where she was sitting. I used to have little 'bets' with my brothers on how many times it would happen during the course of the meeting. heh heh

by LyinEyes inmy mother had been a faithful witness for 16 yrs, she got addicted to prescription drugs and things got very bad for her.
she overdosed one nite and was put in rehab.
she began smoking after rehab and was disfellowhipped for it, she got a letter in the mail .

I'm so sorry for what your mother went through, and your family in the aftermath of her untimely death.
I agree that the WTS bears part of the blame for hers and other deaths as a result of their shunning of people.
The damage, emotionally and psychologically, that this behaviour causes is frightening. They tell you 'not to isolate yourself' on the one hand, and on the other hand they're pretending they don't see you and think of you as "dead". How can a person who is experiencing mental illness like depression dig their way out of the pit of despair when the ONLY "friends" and support network they've ever HAD refuses to affirm their existence? refuses to even acknowledge their entitlement to human respect and dignity?

They don't save their shunning behaviour for just the baddest of the bad either. I was never DFd or DAd, and have never been advised of any charges of wrongdoing against me, or invited to attend any meetings of a Judicial Committee for investigation. Yet, if a JW sees me in public, I get shunned. I don't smoke, I don't drink, I don't commit adultery. I guess not going door to door or attending meetings anymore is considered a "sin" now. But you know what? During the time when things were going lousy for us - I was first on bedrest for a month because of a threatened miscarriage, then after the baby came incapacitated with depression and anxiety attacks, my husband lost his job, my 3 kids got chicken pox one after the other (9 weeks of missed meetings because someone was always contagious), a back injury followed by a car accident and neck injury - NOT ONE of "the friends" even lifted a finger to encourage us. Nobody called. Nobody visited. Nobody gave a flying f*ck. And then when we get on with our lives without them, they have the AUDACITY, the GAUL, to say that we "turned our back on The Truth™". They have the BALLS to say that it wasn't anything they DID that caused US to leave THEM. In a way, they're right - they didn't DO anything. But in DOING NOTHING, they didn't make us want to stick around either. They were just like the Pharisees who taught "what you do not want others to do to you, do not do to them". That's not the "Christian" Golden Rule though. "Whatever you want men to do to you, you must do to them". And believe it or not, we found people who, like us, lived by THOSE words. Those people were Catholics. They were Protestants. Some were Pentecostals. Some were Jewish. But each one of them proved to be more Christian than all the JWs we knew put together.
That year of torture proved to me beyond the shadow of a doubt, that JWs are just like the Pharisees that Jesus condemned.
And if it weren't for those kind, good folks who showed us human compassion and dignity, I probably would not be alive today.

Particularly simple in Canada it seems.
This person had been allowed into Canada as a 'refugee from Algeria. He was granted temporary asylum, the tax-payers paid him a wage, his medical, rent, telephone each month for over three years.He was arrested for burglary if I remember correctly SIX times and let free.
He was in a 'sleeper cell' which awoke and he was the instructed proceed to Los Angeles and destroy its airport. It was a US customs officer with a sharp nose that uncovered his stash of explosives. The Canadian Intelligence services were of course too busy watching the hockey game to notice his activities.
The best thing that the world could do protect itself from terrorism is to invade Ottawa and install a real Government....lol
Canada's "open-door policy" for immigration and refugees is one of my biggest pet peeves.
The individual we are talking about, claimed "refugee status" in Canada by telling Immigration Officials that he had "been accused of arms trafficking in Algeria". Did the Immigration Officials check out the accusation or try to at least determine the veracity of the claim against him for the sake of the security of Canada's citizens?? No, of course not! They believed he was wrongly accused as he claimed he was.
In addition to milking the welfare system as a refugee claimant, he was able to create a new persona for himself by stealing a baptismal certificate from a church. He filled in the information, forged the priest's signature, and voilà - Instant Canadian Citizenship. And because he now had two identities without a job, he was able to supplement his original welfare cheque with a second one for his new persona, in addition to which he was convicted of 6 charges of burglary for which he never served any time.
I'm VERY GLAD the USA is forcing the Canadian Government to revisit its open-door policy for refugee claimants. As much as I love Canada and love the principles behind the policy which grants asylum to people who are truly in jeopardy, the HUGE flaw with it is that people like this slip through and wreak havoc by abusing the privileges we offer to them. I don't like the idea of denying safe haven to someone who genuinely needs it in order to keep the bad guys out. I don't envy the Immigration Department or CSIS their task of weeding out the bad, but it's something that NEEDS to be done, before another 9-11 happens on our doorstep.
