  today, i want to share some scriptures i have come across in my research which show the link between yahweh and the canaanite god el.

  el and other variations such as elyon, el shaddai and elohim appear many times in the bible.

  these are usually translated as god, most high, god almighty and so on.

  Oh the naivety...

  No, @A Believer. You are essentially splitting hairs by saying that they just knew him as God Almighty. God Almighty is a translation of El Shaddai.

  It is enough to say that there is no god after all, but the Judeo-Christian god in particular is derived from neighboring beliefs around the Middle East. The roots of the concept might go back to Amun-Ra, or even further, and also resulted in such gods as Zeus in Greek myth (and you are then to be reminded that the "Greeks" were a broad spectrum of people in the Mediterranean and Asia Minor with heavy Egyptian and Phoenician influence).

  Honestly, we in Western civilization owe a lot to the Canaanites. They gave us our God and even our alphabet.

  Is there a book specifically about the evolution of Yahweh? Like from his origins in Canaanite religion and mythology to God and Jesus? That's the clear picture I get from composite reading of multiple books, but one definitive book on the subject, I am not aware of.

  i found this amusing and ironic, but in a nutshell.

  stay on the yellow brick road, do as we say and want, and we promise you courage, a heart, a brain and a ticket back home (spirtual paradise now/ physical paradise soon/ resurrection guaranteed )... .

  don't ask too many questions or look behind the big curtain, just believe us or you'll fall apart and die... (research or study on your own/internet/ researching the governing body leads to weakness and disfellowshipping).

  after being disgusted by the bs of the sunday meeting, i chatted with one inactive brother came back for that one meeting.

  i can't exactly remember how it came up, but he told me and a sister whose a close friend of mine that she shouldn't be so uptight, we're no longer under the mosaic law.

  that's a comment i heard from an elder i haven't seen in over a decade, yesterday.

  i mentioned it all on my other thread.

  i responded that i knew of no one that was crawling back to the meetings and gave him an incredulous hearty chuckle.

  i've been gone for a while doing other research, checking out other forums.. this forum is the first place i went when i very first started waking up and i just want to say thank you.

  This forum saved my sanity. Sure, there are atheist and secular forums as well. Of course. But Jehovah's witnesses have a specific experience set that I needed to talk about and dispel. So I needed this... You guys have been awesome!

  i am not a jehovah's witness, although i do respect your religion entirely.

  i am 27 years old, and live in minnesota.

  i have an older cousin, who's mother (not with my uncle -separated when my cousin was a baby) had been a witness, grew up in your word, and about 12 years ago she fully converted.

  Smiddy speaks an unfortunate observation about your average JWs. Not all, of course, and in fact there are many JWs who sell insurance products. I was a life agent myself for a time, though I never made a sale.

  At my work, I have practically all the insurance I can get through my employer. Investment and retirement savings too. It's a thing for me. My dad was on the phone with his insurance company and trying to save some money, and I will always remember his words: "I'm not gonna die any time soon." He canceled his life insurance policy. He was diagnosed with terminal adenocarcinoma shortly thereafter. After he died, my mom was just a year too young to collect his social security benefit, so I had to take care of her.

  Sad story is sad.
