  I Asked Help of an Old JW Friend, He Refused to Reply - My E-mail to Him

  a few weeks ago i sent an e-mail to an old friend.

  he and i served for many years together as elders in the same congregation.

  he is still a jw, but he stepped down as an elder many years ago, went back to college (he began studying when he was in college and quit college to pioneer!

  An Elder Friend is Attending a School Right Now - What School is It?

  i just heard that an elder friend, not a po, is attending some sort of training.

  does anyone know what school is going on right now?.

  i also just heard that there will be a circuit overseer school of some sort this year.

  Evidently the CO in my old circuit has not been "trained," so he is going to a school and they are having a sub-CO visit.

  Wilmington, VT Congregation Being Dissolved!

  i just heard this week that the wilmington, vt congregation is being dissolved.

  it is here in southern vermont, and i can remember when it was formed, probably about 30 years ago.. the congregation was always troubled, it seems, and there were so many personality conflicts in it that people who lived next to the kingdom hall would travel to the brattleboro, vt congregation to attend meetings!

  a good percentage of witnesses that lived in that territory refused to go there and attended other congregations.. it seems that attendance has dwindled down to 20 or so, and so it is being disbanded.

  There were serious personality conflicts happening in Wilmington. I'm not absolutely sure, as I've been out for a while, but I think it had to do with one or two elders that no one could stand.

  Widespread speculation you'll never see in print?

  jws are very good at whipping up speculation without ever putting a word in print.

  maybe they learned something from 1975.. what are some of the things you remember hearing that are not "official doctrine" but lots of jws believe it anyway?.

  i've heard a lot of speculation that armageddon would either happen on nisan 14 or in october around the time they reckon the gentile times ended in 1914.. name some of the topics you've frequently heard unsanctioned speculation about.. .

  I've heard some brothers say that God aided in the invention of the automobile so that the preaching work could get done faster!

  That's funny, cause the fastest way to get the work done would be with the TV and Internet, both of which the WTS pretty much ignores!

  Any News on Pioneer Hrs Decreasing or Whether COs will be Ending?

  a few months ago there were some fairly authoritative threads that the pioneer hours were being decreased.

  that has not happened.

  also, there was a thread that the co arrangement was going to be dramatically changed in the next year or two, and i got some private notes from some excellent sources attesting to that.

  A few months ago there were some fairly authoritative threads that the Pioneer hours were being decreased. That has not happened. Does anyone know why not?

  Also, there was a thread that the CO arrangement was going to be dramatically changed in the next year or two, and I got some private notes from some excellent sources attesting to that. It seems the COs were being disbanded and visits to congregations would be done by a local elder from time to time. What is the latest info on that? I haven't always kept up with those threads,as I can no longer get past page 1 on my work computer!

  A few weeks ago I sent an e-mail to an old friend. He and I served for many years together as elders in the same congregation. He is still a JW, but he stepped down as an elder many years ago, went back to college (he began studying when he was in college and quit college to Pioneer!), got his Bachelors and then a Masters degree and today is a leading expert on neurofeedback and is a mental health counselor and therapist.

  Now, this guy and I were tight, and I know he had considerable doubts and issues with the WTS, because we talked about them over the years. I have a grandson that I thought might benefit from neurofeedback, so I wrote an e-mail asking this former friend for some advice and help for my grandson. I wondered if he'd even gotten the e-mail, as I never heard a word back from him. Today I found out that he did get it, but that he didn't even have the decency to reply to me, not even a note acknowleding that he got it and would talk with my ex-wife about it, as they are in the same congregation.

  To say I was disappointed in him is an understatement, and I wondered what to do. Of all people, I thought he might still have some genuine humanity and decency and would treat me as a real human being. Instead, he is following the WTS hard line just like any other good sheep would. I decided I'd call him on it, as I think people in a cult should know when they are displaying that fact, so I sent the following e-mail to him.

  I just talked with Wendy (my ex-wife), and she told me you'd gotten my e-mail on Feb 5 regarding Bryce. I wasn't sure if it had made it through to you. I'm glad it did, and thank you for talking with her.

  Considering our considerable history together, and our former deep friendship, I thought you might have at least acknowledged my note with a reply. Your lack of response I would expect of a Claude B., not a John D. In fact, it was many a conversation with you over the years about our concerns with the WTS and some of its teachings and procedures that eventually led me to leave the Witnesses. I know that deep down, you've got your own issues, though I'm sure they remain hidden and unspoken.

  I thought that, perhaps, with your level of education, intelligence and deep thinking on all things JW, you might have evolved a ways beyond the bronze age practices of shunning those we judge as unworthy of our consideration or compassion. I understand that you don't approve of the choices I've made in life, as I don't approve of some of yours.

  I'm so happy to be free to deal with people honestly and openly and without constant judging of whether they are worthy of my being kind to them.Your lack of response was just further proof to me of what a normally decent person can become when they live their life following the rules created by a group of old men in Brooklyn who are trying to interpret the myths and stories of a bunch of ancient Middle East sheep and camel herders.

  I'm not sure why I'm writing, as I'm sure you won't respond. I guess that it's just that I expected more of you, and I want you to know that. But I think also it's very hard to see how cultlike this conduct is until you're out of it, because no one who is not a Witness would even dream of acting like that, of pretending that an old friend simply doesn't exist. In the meantime, one gladly drinks the KoolAid!

  John, I still think of you fondly as a friend. Some day we may even have a conversation again! How remarkable would that be, two people who think differently about things actually being able to talk and be friends!

  Dad passed away...

  my father passed away last week.

  it was not a sudden thing.

  he was in his eighties and declining in health every time i saw him.

  Wow, a beautifully written tribute for your dad, and I think a very important piece of writing for yourself as well. Good for you.

  My mom is 86 and still a JW. None of us kids are, most never were, and the two that were are now both DFed, which includes me. I've been taking this time to talk with all my siblings about how we should handle things when Mom passes away. She's hardly at death's door - she easily passes and acts like someone decades younger - but I know it will come.

  For me, she's still in a Hall where I was a super-elder for many years, so I think it will be more difficult. I'm just trying to be prepared.

  Your dad sounded like a good guy, and I'm glad you had some time with him in these last years.
