  WTS Idea of "Prophecy" – Do You Find This Ridiculous???

  the wts view is that we don't understand bible prophecy until after it is fulfilled.

  thus their excuse for mis-understanding what was going to happen in 1876, 1914, 1918, 1925, 1975, etc.

  Let me see if I can illustrate:

  Someone prophecies that a commercial airliner is going to crash in Europe in 2007.

  Not a hell of a lot of use.

  If they prophecy the date, that helps more, and then the specific airline, that's a huge plus, and the flight, you're golden. If you avoid that flight, and it crashes, you pay attention after that, eh! If it doesn't, you know that like most prophets, this one if full of shit and not to be taken seriously.

  What the WTS does it take some general statement, look back, and say, "See, it applied to TWS Flight 323 to Paris on August 20!"

  Well, what in hell good does that do you after the fact?? What value is any prophecy if you can only figure it out after the damn thing has happened?

  And thus lies the secret of all prophecy and prophets - make it so general no one can figure it out, but with enough detail that someone somewhere can apply it to something. The Bible prophecies and Nostrodamus are wonderful examples of this kind of bullshit "prophecy." Anyone that believes there is anything to them is a fool.

  Give me the prophet that gives day, time and event before it happens, and then we've got something to talk about!

  The WTS view is that we don't understand Bible prophecy until AFTER it is fulfilled. Thus their excuse for mis-understanding what was going to happen in 1876, 1914, 1918, 1925, 1975, etc.
  
  I always thought this was ridiculous. It made no sense even when I was a brother. What good is a prophecy that you don't understand until AFTER it's over?? A prophecy is only of value if you understand it before it is fulfilled.
  
  Did anyone else find this an incomprehensible explanation?

  i read the thread a few days ago about co, & do charles sinutko and his famous 1967 talk that ended with "stay alive 'till 1975".

  it brought back a flood of memories.

  I'm NOT recommending this in any way, but do think it would be karmacally ironic if tons of the Witnesses who kept us in line for decades with the fear of Armageddon and of disobeying the Gov Body or questioning the WTS, found themselves the subject of pesky phone calls and house to house visits from people reminding them of how very wrong they were!
  
  Think of all the 1000s of doors these folks knocked on in their years of fulltime service, bothering people with an unwanted and unwelcome message! And now it all comes back to haunt them!
  
  And who fought for the right to go house to house with an unwanted message?? Who established it as a civil right to carry on a door to door ministry??
  
  JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES!!!

  our bookstudy conductor said that the chinese gov't wanted to buy meps for "millions" from the society.

  anyone else ever heard this story?

  or is this one region specific?.

  I vaguely remember a story like this - at least the part that the Chinese government wanted to buy the software.
  
  The Chinese government using the Bible Stories book in their schools is silly.
  
  Running Man: You're exactly right about the amount of confusion as to what MEPS was. So many thought that it was software that would take, say, the English WT mag and immediately translate it into dozens of languages. Wayyyyy wrong!

  Anyone recall the WTS's crazy notions about the literal "heart"?

  back in my dub days, i used to make copies of all the old recorded talks i could get my hands on.

  in the process i was surprised to come across several talks in which the "faithful slave" tried to make the case that all the scriptures talking about the "heart" were not figurative, but referred to one's literal heart--the organ itself!

  as i recall, they even incorporated some pseudo-scientific quotes as "proof" that the heart could effect your thoughts and motivations.

  I was in NYC for that DC, and remember the huge model heart and brain onstage. We had evening sessions then, and the models had lights inside so that whichever one was "talking" at the moment lit up.
  
  The heart supposedly was the seat of emotions, the brain of intellect.
  
  I was still a teenager, I think, but a little reading about heart transplant patients made me realize pretty quickly that this idea was nonsense!

  How does the GB convince another to become "Anointed" ?

  this question from another thread, why is the # for annointed still in the 8,000's?

  made me wonder if this had been asked before.. the newest members of the governing body were not always anointed.

  I don't believe, from my own experience, that the GB in any way encourages anyone to "become anointed."
  
  Considering that the vast majority of billions of Christians feel they are going to heaven, why would it be any stretch that some JWs would suddenly get the feeling that they are also? It's obviously simply a matter of a personal viewpoint, a self-delusion if you will.
  
  What I saw happen over the years was this, as far as people deciding that they now are part of the JW 144,000:
  
  1. It seems to hit a lot of menopausal women, especially those who may have had less than satisfying life expereinces and for whom being a JW has been the biggest thing in their life.
  
  2. It also seems to hit younger, gung-ho elders, which is how the new GB members got there.
  
  3. Other new partakers tend to be a little unhinged on the mental health side of things.
  
  That the GB is grooming and encouraging people to see themselves as anointed doesn't make sense. They already have a "concept" in place that the rank and file will accept if all the anointed ones die off.

  I had a JW friend in the Victorville, CA area and his son went to JW school. NOT home schooling, an actual school.

  i received my copy at noon today and have just now had to quit reading.

  i was appalled at the lengths the wtbs has gone to protect themselves in court.

  especially in their objections to handing over documentation.
