Thank you Nathan for bringing this to our attention. I live in Europe, and supposedly non-US citizens have been spied too. This is absolutely disgusting!

It does sound like Nazi-methods to me. I don't care if someone is reading this at NSA. We should have our own firm convictions and if they are not "suitable" to the government, then so be it. Because, today "terrorism" can be something related to being a muslim and tomorrow it can be because you wear pink underwear. See Turkey. People demonstrating on the streets are considered "terrorists" and "criminals".

If the government will go against its own citizens than something is terribly wrong.

Sad, but we have to count on more and more of this (not forgetting the sick tendency of more public cameras, etc.)

so, here i am almost 5 years after the big exit.

life during this time has been tumultous, joyous and sometimes full of tears.

got new friends, social circle moving well (i am an outgoing person), new girlfriend (after messy divorce of jw wife), own business.. but i knew something would come back and bite me into my rear-end:.

But I KNEW something would come back and bite me into my rear-end:

15 years of Bethel & Missionary activities...I managed that basically by faking my CV. I invented a fictious business and activities for that time period. Got the first job - nobody checked, and after that my CV is basically "clean" (people checking only my last real job, not the crappy BORG-slave activities).

Now, I basically hate all social networking sites, but due to a strong business reason had to setup shop in LinkedIn.

BAHM! Damned databases. Now all kinds of Witnesses find me on LI and start checking my profile (I can't lock it, because of my customers - I did once and everybody started asking why I did it). They KNOW that I was FTS during the specific time period...

DAMN IT! My past haunting me now...so far nothing special happened, but this thought is creeping into my mind that someone out there (JW) could become an a$$**** and "denounce" me.

How have YOU coped with your previous Life? Explaining "missing time", "missing education", or simply missing Christmas pics to your new friends? Would like to hear how you have tried to "erase" the past.

jdubs are fond of quoting peter "where are we to go lord"... well the answer for me has been this forum for last couple of years which is really sad because i should be able to talk to my lifelong friends instead of faceless avatars.

( don't get me wrong this place has helped me through some really rough times mentally kudos to terry, cedars,slimboyfat, blondie,jwfacts and many others.).

If it helps, I went through the exact same turmoil. Everybody else in this thread was/is in the same boat.

Basically you have to know yourself. It will be painful, nonetheless, if you decide to stay: pain because of the nagging feeling that you are giving up your Life, and the tremendous loss of freedom. If you get out: pain because of losing family & friends and starting to "re-invent" yourself!

I saw the other day a documentary about East-Germans that fled the GDR (German Democratic Republic) because their love for freedom was bigger than their fear of losing it all. They showed scenes of people that where heart wrenching. They would reach a point where they decided that leaving friends, family, house and belongings, secure jobs was better than staying imprisoned. Interesting to see how humans react if their mental or physical freedom is taken from them. Some of them left and never saw their relatives again. Most of them went to start a new Life in a new country (that wouldn't necessarily receive them with "open arms").

"Same brain in the skull": made me really think. I was a born-in, left after 35 years. Didn't have the smallest problem in the transition to atheism, AND YET, the brain that lead me to stay and practice a cult is STILL THERE. Made me think.

Actually we still show "cult thinking" long after we leave. I notice it - every day. And that is where the hard work starts. Working on yourself. Not a easy task.

I will say something that is "not politically correct" and will probably not get "thumbs up":

I do think that some kind of lying is part of human nature and even expected by others. I would say 90% of humans are never ready for the full blown hard truth in their faces. People like the "soft truth" (often a lie). A few examples that come to my mind:

"Sweetie, do you think I am fat?"

"Nope, dear, I love you as you are you should just take care and do some exercising."

versus

"Yes, I actually do think that very often. Matter of fact, sometimes I wake up and think you are a fat cow, but then I strike these thoughts out of my mind, because they are mean, but that is actually what I think of you. Eventhough I love you, you are fat."

Most people are not ready to TELL the truth or to HEAR the truth.

What is "truth" anyway??? Maybe today he thinks she is fat, tomorrow he sees someone that is even fattier and changes his mind and thinks his wife is in reality Olive Oyl. Truths change all the time. But that leads to another dilemma...you know what I mean.

SAD news about OOMPA......

just recieved the news a couple of hours ago, and have almost no details.

it happened today or yesterday, he took his own life.

Oompa lives on. I am out for 3 years now and it is strange, but certain days a big wave of negativity and suicidal thoughts comes crushing down on me. I lost, like many of you, all my family and close friends. I was even happy about the shunning, because my mother stopped bugging me with all the crap about coming back. But, honestly there are days where I completely loose it....THAT is when I think about our dear Oompa. I think if that is how I want to end, and I kick into another gear and start doing something positive and fighting back.

What I most like about the last website is the core thought that if you resist some thoughts (fear, anxiety) they persist! If you fight against certain thoughts/feeling you are basically "fueling" the process and they come back stronger. We feed into the negative cycle and make it worse. Just ALLOW them and observe the thoughts, like objects. Try to observe your thoughts and suddenly your minds "chatter" becomes silent. Very interesting.

Several countries and branches. I have talked to you over pm.

I know that you didn't meant to offend with the term. I must say that we measure "first world" by means of money/military power/GDP/sanitary and health system/education etc.

But I must also say that the world has other measurements too. I've met some of the most interesting people in poor villages and some of the most arrogant assholes in rich, northern European countries. You can't generalize and I am against the notion that "poor" makes you nice and humble (it is not true, poor makes people do some nasty things to each other!), but people had time to reflect on things and gain very interesting perspectives about Life, they had "invested" hundreds of hours in pure thinking. Something that in the stress riden West is impossible to do at a high quality level.

Where do you consider the best place to live in the world

for those of you who have travelled the world over, which country or city will you consider the place to live in the world.

A "Best Place" should meet the following criteria:

Security > free from conflicts, war, terror - low probability on natural disasters (hurricanes, earthquakes) - I think San Francisco / California would be out of question - earthquakes... or Florida because of Hurricanes.

Weather > stable weather conditions - at least (this is dependent on each individual - some people love snow, some hate it, so discretionary)

Social aspects > friendly, satisfied people - I don't think Northern European countries count (lived in some of them), people there tend to be depressive and suicidal.

Schooling & Health care > easy to reach high quality standards - I've lived on some caribbean islands and believe me, having a bad tooth pain without dentists around is bad. Really bad (talking from experience).
