New Ex-JW support group in SF Bay Area
by Snowball ini am pleased to anounce a new chapter of the san francisco bay area support group for ex-jws has been started.. the [silicon valley ex-jw support group] will be holding its first meeting on january 28th, and thereafter every 4th sunday of the month.. we are aiming to be accessible to the south and east bay area, including san jose.
our meeting place will be in the fremont/milpitas area.
we desire to provide a safe place for ex-jws to be able to heal without the judgementalism that we experienced in the watchtower, so we encourage all attendees to be tolerant and non-condemning of other members or their current lifestyles.

TV Viewing Habits
by Seven ininterviewer:has watching tv affected you?.
wyant:yes.
sometimes when i'm around people, i find myself just watching them-as if i was watching a tv talk show-instead of participating in the conversation.

I remember the separate section at the assembly when it was released but I can't remember sitting in it.
Maybe I was too young (unlikeley) or just couldn't be bothered moving seats (most probably). -

shunning and family members
by crittersitter ini have 3 sisters still in the org.
is it still called the "org"?
2 of them maintain no contact, one because i'm an evil apostate, the other is two faced about it(nice on the phone 2x a year, but does not let anyone know about the contact) the 3rd is pretty cool about it, we e-mail alot and i call monthly( all live 1200 miles away).

Hi Crittersitter
I've been on both sides of the shunning thing - my father was Df'd so I was instructed not to talk to him and now (ironically since I've got back in touch with him) my mother and sisters won't talk to me because I have dared to question the mighty bastions of truth, the WTBTS.
My brother who never got baptised is OK - they will talk to him of course (and he's OK with us) but merely for discovering things in the societies own literature that can only be described as lies (they can't be refuted as they are in black and white) then we have been labelled and shunned despite being told at the time that "you'll always be our brother, no matter what...you'll always be welcome...no, we can't discuss anything unless you write it down first" (?!).
I intend to visit them when they're old and grey, tell them about the great life I've had with my family and ask them what happened to armageddon and Jehovah and if they've just wasted their life...'cause I'm bitter and twisted that way ! -

Jehovah's Organization
by Sassenach ini've recently had a discussion with a witness friend in which she said that jehovah had to have an organization.
if not jehovah's witnesses, then who else could possibly have his approval?.
what i would like to know is if jehovah has always had an organization, who were they?

I'll look into this Sassenach - it should work with Netscape OK though.

Good ol' 1914
by MoodyBlue inok folks...i'm actually gonna stop lurking and post.... i am currently being 'studied' with to rectify my doubts (i'm baptized but considered inactive) i brought up the 607/1914 thing and the sister said she'd research it and get back to me... she didn't know about the 587 date (surprise surprise).
anyway she came back to me saying something about just having to count back 70 years or something and voila!
it was that simple... she also said the society had prophesied about 1914 being the end of the gentile times.... now i know that ain't so...there was prophecy yes, but it but it wasn't until after 1914 that the horn blowing started about the correctness of the date... 1874 immediately sprang to mind.

The big thing that they attach to 1914 now is that the Gentile times ended and Christ returned 'invisibly'. These used to be separate events though - the gentile times ended at vaious dates from 1799 as did Christ (originally 1874). They only set them to the same date of 1914 as it was the only date that something dramatic happened on (although nothing like what they had foretold).
Interestingly, The Harp of God published in the 1920's still claims that Christ returned in 1874 - they certainly didn't prophesy this as they now claim.
The funnies thing is the list of 'proofs' they have that Christ had returned. These are (I kid you not - p.235 in the small edition):
Aeroplanes, Aluminium (a few years later to be declared the work of Satan), Artificial Dye, Barbed Wire, Bicycles, Cash Registers, Escalators, North Pole (wasn't that already there?), Panama Canal, Railway Signals, South Pole (I guess they go together), Submarines, Sky Scrapers, Telephones, Typewriters, and Vacuum Cleaners.
They don't make much fuss about that though do they ! -

Hi mommy
Sorry to hear about another bad JW experience, look forward to getting to know you better on the forum.
BTW: You will find entering everything in capitals can annoy some people because it makes the text a bit harder to read - it's the internet equivalent of shouting. -

Starting a band
by TR ini've been toying with the thought of starting a band.
so far it's a one-man band, for i know few in the music world where i live.
what i want to do is purchase a mixer so i can edit my own bass, drum and guitar tracts.

I really like the gospel type stuff he did - the Saved album is fantastic.
Hmmn...time for me to add sound clip embedding I think...
