Wasn't it Rutherford who ended Christmas celebrations at Bethel and forbade celebrating it? I assume it was him because he seemed to make a lot of policy/doctrinal decisions based on his apparent desire to differentiate the organization from mainstream Christianity. Making a big fuss about the birth date of Jesus versus the birthday of Jesus is the kind of contrarian nonsense that characterized so many of his decisions.

Fashion in Heaven
by peacefulpete inwhy is it that fashions are assumed to have stayed the same in heaven for thousands of years?
you'd think that after wearing the same boring robe for eternity you'd crave something different.
yet no, angels and god are still wearing the same white onesie they had when they vacationed on earth with abraham.

Now I can't help but keep hearing in my head the voice of Liberace groaning "I wish my apostle Paul was here" before beginning his next musical interlude.

Memories of Excessive Laughter
by Sea Breeze injw's are not known for laughter.
there are the rare exceptions.
they are more known for their fear mongering and doomsday scenarios where "the dead shall come to be as manure on the surface of the ground from one end of the earth clear to the other".

Most of the JWs I knew were pretty normal. I can remember a couple of people who were sour most of the time, the kind of people who responded to "good morning" with "what's so good about it?" And there were some MS and elders who let the position get to their heads and could suck the fun out of any gathering. But I found most of them to be kind and friendly people.
Ironically, part of that perception probably comes from my frame of reference. My mother is one of the most dour and bitter people I have ever known. She rarely let her guard down. She could be perfectly nice around other JWs, though you could see where it was forced from time-to-time. But with her family, she was as negative and downtrodden a person as I can ever imagine. Compared to her, even the most contrarian JW was pretty mellow.
I think the dividing line was that some JWs were anxious for that last day to happen, while most were content to live their lives without worrying about it. To me, it seems as if the more hardcore you were, the more miserable you were. Because the greatest day of your life was so, so close but never, ever arrived.

Scam Marketing !
by Phizzy inwe are constantly being attacked by scam marketers who create a perceived need , not a real one, and hence create within us a want.
if we fill our desire for that thing or things by buying in to it, we then end up with totally unnecessary expense.
we have been scammed.. whether that be something to do with the latest fashions and trends, the latest 'phone, car or something similar.. the longest running, and most lucrative marketing scam in all human history has been religion.

I think it developed organically, for many different reasons. And, over time, was corrupted for the benefit of those who could use it to take advantage of the people around them. Which, sadly, makes it like so many other human endeavors: business, finance, government, and so on. Created to meet a need, developed as societies grew, and abused by grifters.
The survival instinct keeps doing its thing, even when it is detrimental to the group and, therefore, the individual.

Lots of people will reflexively give when someone begs, so he will always see an increase when he does so. But there are diminishing returns, especially if done too often in a short time frame, and moreso when there is not enough content to justify the continued support. After a while, it will become apparent that he's asking them to fund his living expenses with nothing to show for it.
He was on his way to 900-1,000 Patreon subscribers when he made his disastrous livestream. He has managed to get the number back up over 500 once with a begging stunt, and had another one or two increases when he reached out to his remaining supporters. How many subs would he have now, if he had more self-control? 2,000? 5,000? Subscriber totals tend to increase at a faster rate as the number grows, after all.
But, no... he threw it away. Not because he is sexually repressed and cannot control his penis. The problem is that he cannot control his ego.

What is Your Favorite WT Lie?
by Sea Breeze ini would like to start a thread on lies that the watchtower and their reps have told.
surely we all have one or two that truly sticks out in our memories, no matter how much we would like to forget.
my favorite wt lie: the reason they don't want to release the name of the "scholars" who worked on the new world translation is because they do not want to accept "glory and honor" from others.

greenhornet: My mom making hamburger patties. "It's not blood it's juice"
She was right, kinda. Myoglobin is a protein found in the muscles of animals. It's not a component of blood. Mixed with oxygen, it's the source of the "red" in red meat and is what makes the 'juice' red.

Anyone know what the differences were between those editions? And why they felt they were necessary?
