i do know that those disfellowshipped are not allowed to receptions though. They're allowed to the wedding itself since it's supposedly a public event (though the elders in my area were even causing a fit about that...my disfellowshipped sister was going to be at the wedding), but she wasn't allowed to come to the reception...not even to sit at a table by herself. That upset me a lot..

What would Emily Post say??
by ChakkaConned inlast week i received a wedding invitation in the mail from an elder's daughter whose getting married next month.
being on the outer social fringe of the congregation for 20 years and recently missing quite a few meetings, i was abit surprised to receive an invitation from her.
the invitation is to attend the wedding(only) at the kh without a mention of the reception which i found out is being held at a separate private location afterwards.

usually it's the stuck-up witnesses that pull that sort of crap. I think witnesses feel that they'll be looked down on if they have "worldly" people at the reception...but all of my sisters had worldly people at their weddings and i didn't see any problem with that. It was a little awkward, but that was probably because i was on the inside looking out ;)

JT, i hate to be rude, but your response was the same response my mother gave me for 17 years. I am at college right now anyway, majoring in computer science and engineering. I know what witnesses teach, and I know that there is *nothing* wrong with being successful. You, as many witnesses, try to equate success with greed of money. I am currently very successful (I was asked to be the co-chair of an international conference in France this July), but by no means am I a lover of money or material things. I write software for free...I go to college so that I can better support my family by not having to worry about money. I do not get involved in any of the parties here at college...i do not smoke, i do not drink, i do not do drugs. As much as you'd hate to recognize it, the world isn't as black and white as you are told it is. Take it from someone who's been here, and not a group of people who have not.

that stuff is foolish...if you make your own pattern to search for, with that much entropy, you're bound to find something...it would be like having a bowl of alphabet soup and being suprised that you could spell "food" with it, because that's what you were looking for.

some things other people have commented on but i think need emphasis. If the org apparently keeps receiving "new light", why would they switch back and forth between two beliefs (sometimes 4 times or more) about *important* subjects. It would seem to me that it's impossible for there to be "new light" if you're reverting to old beliefs. Also think about the generations of people that lived before there were jw's. The GB made you think they were the only way for salvation...and they scare you into staying with them because they say that if you were given the opportunity by JW's to follow Jehovah in their way, and you rejected it, that you would not be resurrected. Which is actually one of the things they have switched back and forth on over the years...whether the "unrighteous" would be ressurected as well. Don't you think that would be something important God would want us to know? I think so.

Who shuns you?
by Dawn inafter reading a number of posts it sounds like most of you have been shunned even by your immediate family members (parents, brothers, sisters)after you were df'd.. i am shunned by my sister-in-law - but she's it out of the entire family.
my uncle, brothers, mother, and father (an elder before he passed away) all continued to associate with me - we even go out to dinners together.. so here's my question - is my family the minority?
i thought that only non-family members had to shun you but family was ok as long as they don't discuss spiritual issues.

nope...i didn't get to talk to my sister for 17 years. I think the only time that it doesn't apply to a family member is if it's your parents.
