The 100th Monkey
The Japanese monkey, Macaca Fuscata, had been observed in the wild for a period of over 30 years.
In 1952, on the island of Koshima, scientists were providing monkeys with sweet potatoes dropped in the sand. The monkey liked the taste of the raw sweet potatoes, but they found the dirt unpleasant.
An 18-month-old female named Imo found she could solve the problem by washing the potatoes in a nearby stream. She taught this trick to her mother. Her playmates also learned this new way and they taught their mothers too.
This cultural innovation was gradually picked up by various monkeys before the eyes of the scientists. Between 1952 and 1958 all the young monkeys learned to wash the sandy sweet potatoes to make them more palatable. Only the adults who imitated their children learned this social improvement. Other adults kept eating the dirty sweet potatoes.
Then something startling took place. In the autumn of 1958, a certain number of Koshima monkeys were washing sweet potatoes -- the exact number is not known. Let us suppose that when the sun rose one morning there were 99 monkeys on Koshima Island who had learned to wash their sweet potatoes. Let's further suppose that later that morning, the hundredth monkey learned to wash potatoes.
THEN IT HAPPENED!
By that evening almost everyone in the tribe was washing sweet potatoes before eating them. The added energy of this hundredth monkey somehow created an ideological breakthrough!
But notice: A most surprising thing observed by these scientists was that the habit of washing sweet potatoes then jumped over the sea...Colonies of monkeys on other islands and the mainland troop of monkeys at Takasakiyama began washing their sweet potatoes.
Thus, when a certain critical number achieves an awareness, this new awareness may be communicated from mind to mind.
Although the exact number may vary, this Hundredth Monkey Phenomenon means that when only a limited number of people know of a new way, it may remain the conscious property of these people.
But there is a point at which if only one more person tunes-in to a new awareness, a field is strengthened so that this awareness is picked up by almost everyone!

A Paradox for JWs and other religious people
by NutFlush ini was raised a jw and left nearly 15 years ago before/when i went away to college.
since then, i have had nothing to do with organized religion (or non-organized religion, for that matter).
in my experiences, fervent religious belief has not correlated well with things such as critical reasoning ability or secular success as measured by profession, level of education, income, etc.. i was browsing the blog of a semi-well-known guy who has worked in some of the same fields as me and came upon the following passage:.

Nutflush, great thread! It's a paradox I doubt will draw many believers in to comment. Although Snowbird never ceases to amaze me. I would like to see her comments just for the entertainment.

What I've found here
by paul from cleveland ini originally came here to find proof that the witnesses don't have the truth.
i was so afraid of being destroyed at armagedon.. i didn't really find the convincing proof i was looking for.. what i did find, however, is the love and total acceptance that i hadn't felt before.
to me, that's more important..

The history of 1914
by PYRAMIDSCHEME ini am still going through the questioning my faith stage as i just discovered the inconsistencies of the org.
it was 1914 that really threw me for a loop.
i have never been completely sold on the "new light" policy.

I agree with Terry, what HAS Jesus been doing since 1914?

Why is god hiding?
by AK - Jeff inwhat god could have done to show himself:.
he could have left incontrovertible evidence of his existence.he could have made it impossibly evident that mankind has been here only 6000 years, not the 200,000 give or take, that fossil evidence supports.
he could have provided evidence through jesus to millions of non-believers, instead of focusing on a small band of fanatical followers eager to point to 'the messiah'.he could at any time, being the ultimate of beings, just simply show himself in the sky, speak to millions instead of to the lonely occasional deluded sheepherder in the desert, or provide miracles to millions of us as observers - part the ocean, cure cancer and announce it from heaven in a clear unmistakable voice, or instantaneously stop starvation and plague in it's tracks.

Thanks for starting the thread Jeff. Anyone who bases their life on reality and not emotion can understand how important the things you brought up are.
I have gotten the same response from a friend when presenting this type of evidence that you got from Snowbird, ie if you really didn't care you would not worry about it. In my case, I don't worry about it but bring it up because of people like Snowbird who present their emotional experience as reality based. If people like her would just admit it's just something that makes them feel good and that it could be nothing more than a delusion, I would not feel he need to bring up the subject. But I have yet to see anyone like her do that.
Being mislead for so many years because I just happened to have parents who tainted me from birth and never explained that there might be another choice, I applaud your efforts to spread the message of reality which hopefully someday will relagate Jesus to the status of Hercules.
